View Full Version : OBS -- LED Dash -- How-To

What You Need:

(6) 194 bulbs (Gauges)*
(4) T1.5's (HVAC)**
Socket - can't remember what size, but it's the same size as the screws holding the bottom
portion of the dash in place.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*the 5-LED bulbs work great.
**note. This is only if you want to color match your HVAC to your gauges.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
First off, you need to decide what color you want your gauges to be. After you do this, go to buy your LEDs from somewhere. I used superbrightleds.com, they were amazing.

Then, you need to take your dash off, I find it easier to take the lower part off first, and the upper second.. Disconnect your 4-WD switch (if applicable), the cargo lamp switch, the passenger side air-bag switch, and the switch for your headlights. Set the top portion of the dash aside (I find this to be done easier if you move the shifter all the way down to 1, if an automatic. ***just make sure you have your parking break set, as you will be taking it out of park***)

The next step will be to pull the gauge cluster itself. There are four screws holding it in place. Here is a picture of the two screws on the left side of the cluster;

http://img174.imageshack.us/img174/8646/pict0003tq9.jpg

The right side of the cluster is just like this, take these four screws out and set aside.

Then you’re ready to pull your cluster. Just gently pull it out, the top will come out before the bottom. The only connection for the cluster to the truck is one on the back, and it automatically disconnects when you pull it;

http://img264.imageshack.us/img264/1833/pict0013yz6.jpg

Now you’re ready to pull the bulbs for the illumination. This is very simple, all you do is take hold of the bulb holder with your fingers, and twist. Twist counterclockwise to take them out, and clockwise to put them back in. The movement is very little, 1/8 of a turn at max.

http://img264.imageshack.us/img264/9154/pict0005oh6.jpg

http://img174.imageshack.us/img174/5091/pict0004xi8.jpg

Here are the six places where there are bulbs that need replacing;

http://img264.imageshack.us/img264/7320/pict0011xs6.jpg

http://img264.imageshack.us/img264/5216/pict0012bx7.jpg

After you have your six bulbs out of the cluster, you need to take the bulbs themselves out of the bulb holders;

http://img174.imageshack.us/img174/8582/pict0006yv1.jpg

Here’s one of the old bulbs;

http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/4395/pict0007um2.jpg

Once you have all the bulbs pulled from the holders, you can put your new LEDs into the holders.

Here’s what the 5-LED bulb from superbrightleds.com looks like from the side;

http://img174.imageshack.us/img174/1867/pict0010hl8.jpg

All you need to do, is push the bulb into the holder.

Here, the LED is installed into the holder;

http://img264.imageshack.us/img264/5966/pict0008iu6.jpg

http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/3323/pict0009qw7.jpg

Now, all that is needed is to do all the aforementioned steps in reverse.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tedious as it may sound, I recommend putting the bulbs in one by one, and sliding the cluster in until it makes contact with it’s connection, to see if you have the LED in the right way, if the bulb does not light up, you have to twist out the bulb, and turn it 180 degrees in either direction, then twist back into place.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Once you’re sure all the bulbs are functioning, you’re ready to reinstall your cluster.

To do the HVAC, simply pull the HVAC unit out until you can access the bulbs on the top. They come out just like the previous ones, counterclockwise to pull out, and clockwise to put in. However, these bulbs don’t come out of their holders, but the new bulbs you bought, already have the right connectors on them, so all you need to do is twist in your new bulbs, put the HVAC unit back in, and you’re set.

Then connect all of your connections to your dash, snap it in place, and put the lower part back on.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
**if anyone sees anything I need to change, let me know**

That looks good, does anybody know what type of bulb the HVAC uses in the 88-94 trucks? I want to replace those bulbs with LED's, they're out anyway. Unfortunately I can't switch the color of my moonies. I put LED's in before, and they weren't as bright. I would like to put some new LED's in for my HVAC though.

Not True, you can do them to the moonies it just takes a lot of work. You would have to work on every instrument individually and cut out certain parts of the green plastic. test and cut test and cut.

Ill charge up the camera and get you some pics b4 I go to bed

Edit: it will be some time this weekend, the charger is packed away. Moving this weekend :)

Thanks for the pics, I know you have to do lots of work to change the moonies, and not nearly as easy as the 95-98 gauges. Does anybody know the kind of bulbs the HVAC unit uses? I need to buy some and want to get the right kind. Does the 88-94 display use the same bulbs as the 95-98?

I don't believe there was such a wire on my '97. The only thing connected electrically to the cluster was the connection in the picture above, and it just comes out when you pull the cluster.

Ya i popped mine out once and mine is a 91 and it has the same plug and play setup as far as the cluster plugs into the input in the dash no wires, but this is a think metal wire no electric value just a wire that is riveted to the colom and when you move the shifter it moves the wire in return moves the orange indicator

Has anyone tried a different color than red on the old style gauges like blue or green with the clear needles? I am not to much into the red on black but on white it would look a lot better i think and would stand out a lot better. Also how much brighter is the gauges after you switch to leds? if any?

My HAVC lights need replacing now on my '97 so I think I am going to do this. One question though with the leds can you still dim the dash lights? And I too would like to see the blue cause I want to go blue to match my H/U

Edit: Are these the right lights to do the guages and HAVC?

No, you can't really dim the lights anymore.

And these are the bulbs you need for the HVAC, (4) T1.5's

Does any one know how many T1.5's i will need to change all the bulbs for my app. I have a suburban and there is the hvac controls at the dach. one in the over head console and, a hvac control in the read headliner. So thats three all together.

I would think if they all look the same, then just multiply the # required for one application by 3. And if you have too many, then you'll simply have extras for when/if they burn out.

I read somewhere you can take the orange off the needles with fingernail polish remover.

DirtyGmc
12-12-2007, 10:32 PM
yeah, the orange is just a paint or something on the backside of the needle that comes off with solvent. And yeah, ive seen lots of people claim nail polish remover to work real well.

I just swapped mine from blue to red and love them. A LOT easier on the eyes at night, but at the same time they dont light up the cab nearly as much as the blues did.

Nope, just pull out the old bulbs and pop the LEDs in the twist locks. And don't be afraid to pull hard, the bulbs are stuck in there pretty well.

The wire is riveted to the clip, the clip will just slide off of the column.

You can adjust it, it slides on the column. You can also lube the slider on the gear indicator.

Pics are worth a million-billion words! I do know that the HVAC control out of a '95 is different than the '96+. But I would think that they should still be a twist base bulb (holder). Have you twisted couter-clockwise? :think:

What led's are for the map light? Correct me if I'm wrong, but the map lights are the two round lights in the overhead consloe, right? On the first page it says Festoon 4410, but that dosent look like the right kind of bulb at all, I just want to make sure before I order em. Also, what led for the overhead light (I guess thats what its called, the big light in the center, that comes on when you open the door)?

Map light/reading light... I'm not sure which is which, but what's referred to as the map light on the page is the festoon-style bulb (long narrow) that comes on when the door is open. You might look around for one of quadkid's older threads... I'm pretty sure he swapped his, and I think he stated what they were.

ok guys, i ordered my green LED's from superbright. came in a day after i ordered. awesome. i started on my install of the guages and i can not seem to disconnect the 4wd, passenger airbag, and bed light. the headlight switch seemed to just pulled out of the dash besel with no problem. what to do?

btw. after i had messed around with it for about 10-20 minutes i just put everything back together and went to bed. i got in my truck this morning to go to work and noticed my DRL's (daytime running lights) are not working. The little green dash light is not on and the headlights aren't on either. When i turn the headlights to caution lights and full on headlights they work fine. What's up with that?

Has anyone used the " UV-Blacklight " L.E.D. bulbs from superbright?
I will most likely go with the blue ones to match my h/u, but everyone does the blue, I wanna be different and don't wanna spend a couple hundred bucks on chitty looking bulbs...

I'm planning on doing a FULL on L.E.D. bulb swap, I mean everything!

I'm planning on colored ones for the cluster, all three HVAC controls, under dash, both dome lights, all four door lights and I'm going to look into doing the headlight switch, power window/lock switches in all four doors as well, depending on what bulbs they use and if they are replaceable or not...

For the adjustable round map lights (i have 6 of them) and the tag lights and my "city lights" in my halo housings, I want to do the " cool white "...

I still need to find the post on here that says what bulbs the round map lights take...

As you can see, this will be a LARGE bulb order, I haven't even started a complete list of what I will need yet, but I wanted to ask about the UV-Blacklight bulbs, it could be really cool, or really suck-ass, I do not know...

So, with all that said, anyone got any useful advice?

Just thinking about putting "black" lights in a car makes me cringe. Seeing every speck of dust and debris, any stains you may have on your carpet etc. I wouldn't think it would be a good idea, but it would be kinda interesting to see if one of you goes through with it.

i think im going to just go with red...

BTW i figured this out on another forum...

Ive read it takes 5 watts for that little bulb....

4 - Cargo / 3rd Brake Light - Little Bit Bigger bulb about same
2 - Front Signals
6 - Dash
2 - Floor
2 - Door
4 - Almost same thing behind Heater controls
2 - License Plate

So a Extra 110 Watts / 9.16 Amps but most of the time driving in traffic i would have a extra 80 Watts / 6.6 Amps that my alternator wouldnt have to produce....

Not only that but they would look awesome!!!! btw i based this all on a 5 Watt Draw

Truck Charges Faster...
Alternator Is Used Less - Gaining More MPG's....
Alternator Lasts Longer....
Bulbs Last Longer....
Bulbs Are Brighter....
Dont Get As Hot, So they Dont Leave "Burn" Marks Inside Bulbs...
Look Nicer...

My Alternator Makes 105 Amps / 1360 Watts

If i replaced Every Bulb in my Truck to LED i would use 326 Watts less which is quite alot... thats like buying a high output alternator...(27.16 Amps Extra)

and can be done for about 100 bucks and they last almost a life time

Has anyone done this with white LED's and have any pics?

I would think if they all look the same, then just multiply the # required for one application by 3. And if you have too many, then you'll simply have extras for when/if they burn out.

LED's don't burn out.

so i got the lights and tried the green first, they were better than the stock ones for sure, very bright. I went with the red ones just because the green seemed not that far from stock. both are definately an improvement.

This thread should be a sticky, it was very helpful

I just ordered my bulbs, with extra's of course. I went with the red, can't wait for them to get here!

And I also have a question, I ordered 6 x T1.5's, 12 x 194's and 4 x 4410-x9 festoon bulbs. Which should cover the dash, HVAC and dome lights, with a few extra's left over. Im curious is anyone knows what bulbs are in the door marker lights and in the window controls. How about the rear air control on the ceiling and what about in the rearview mirror?

If anyone has this info that would be great, thanks!

Also, how do you remove the ceiling map light plastic in order to get to the bulb, does it just pop off?

the little door side marker things are 194 too I believe, and don't know about the dome deal and ac, switches, not a clue.

The door marker lights are 194's, I am working on figuring out the window buttons right now, the dome cover deals just pop off, not sure about the rest.

Here's a link to the window button lights...http://www.fullsizechevy.com/forums/general-discussion/interior-tech/369225-what-kind-bulb-help.html

Thought I would post up. I ordered my LED's for the gauges/HVAC the other day. Going with blue, to match my new radio I'm suppose to be getting this Friday.

This isn't my first dog & pony show with LED's as I did my eclipse about a year ago, with green.

Weather permiting, I should be able to install them this weekend, pictures to follow soon after.

I got my bulbs and installed them today. Went smoothly, however one of the HVAC bulbs need to be flipped because its not lighting up. Anyway, im pleased, decided to white out the needles as well, how you might ask? Sand paper, and liquid white out haha, worked out well.....
