View Full Version : Attempting to replace rear view mirror

You ever go through a period where the simplest jobs seem to turn to $hit? The mirror on my '88s rear view has slowly been losing the silvering or whatever, so today I decided to replace it, an easy 2 minute job, right? Took the mirror off the tab and threw it in the dumpster, slid my new OEM replacement on the button and found out the mirror had been replaced before and the mounting button is smaller than the factory. So after a half day cruise through the city, with stops at Auto Zone, Advance, Carquest, NAPA, and several no-name parts stores, I still have not found a mirror that will fit the smaller tab. Temporarily I've velcro'd the new tab to the old, and believe it or not it's holding and not vibrating too badly (although it looks kind of strange, LOL), but I need to find a mirror that will fit the smaller tab or figure a way to get the small tab off without taking a chunk of windshield with it. Any ideas, anybody? Preferably a point to a mirror for the smaller tab. Thanks in advance.

take a crescent wrench and grab it and twist it off like its a bolt. It will pop right off pretty easy

Silveradoguy-- You're the man. That sucker popped off. Been afraid to try anything like that, didn't want to take a chunk out of the window, but just said "What the h-ll". Off to get a tube of rearview mirror adhesive. Thanks

no problem, windshield glass is pretty hard to break, the glue that holds those tabs on will break off much sooner
