View Full Version : trip meter not working.... nevada89gmc 11-24-2008, 07:25 PM got a 92 silverado, 2wd, the odometer is working fine, but the trip meter is not working ... this guage can't be mechanical in nature, correct? anything specific i should check? thanks for your help and replies. someotherguy 11-24-2008, 08:34 PM It is in fact mechanical...sort of. An electric motor operates the odometer, which turns the trip meter via a little plastic driveshaft. Usually the trip meter is broken internally because it was reset one too many times while it was turning (you're supposed to do it when you're sitting still.) If you can score another gauge cluster it's no big deal to open it up and change it out. You might open yours and find it was just the driveshaft broke. Richard nevada89gmc 11-25-2008, 04:02 PM hey, thank you. i am actually looking for a tach dash, maybe that could solve it. btw, what do tcah dashes go for? how would i set odometer to the correct mileage, it only has 53,000 on it. thanks again. someotherguy 11-25-2008, 09:18 PM Yep, just grab a tach dash from 92-94 and pop it in, plug-and-play. Expect to pay anywhere from $25 to $100 depending on prices in your area. Most people I see advertise them here for $40 or $50 + shipping. You can move your existing odometer over to keep the mileage the same. Sometimes the driveshaft pieces aren't compatible between the two clusters and you have to move the odometer AND tripmeter over, which obviously wouldn't work since your tripmeter is broken, but it's not that common for them to be different in my experience. Think it happened to me once. (Yeah; when I swap clusters I move the odometers over, I like my mileage to stay accurate) Richard vBulletin® v3.8.2, Copyright ©2000-2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
