I am Working on my 1991 this thanksgiving break, already replaced the wiper circuit board (which i siliconed per Gm instructions, as the previous one showed the affects of kansas dust.) and the door switch replaced, as i was getting tired of light coming on going down the road.:aniteef:
The new project is my dash cluster which everything but the odometer and trip meter work. I took it apart, doing so on my wood topped metal desk, making sure to touch the leg before i played w/ cluster. (is this a safe enough work station to prevent static damage?)
I found the shaft that the odometer rides on to not be in the slot completely. so i snap it in and rotate it the correct direction (fingers on gears) It locks up and then snaps hard when the 0 rolls over on the 10ths. so basically, every time a mile goes by, it locks up, then if you force it more, it makes a snap, and then rotates with no issue. Most of the time one needs to hold the shaft in, as when it locks, it usually torques the shaft out of the plastic holder.
I can see they have been in the cluster before, as the JD dealership's name is written on the Odometer/Trip meter pack assembly. It also looks as if the black trip meter gear is split.
So, is this fixable, and if so, what do i do?
If not, will a odometer/trip meter pack (cluster set, IDK, what to call it) from any 1988-1991 truck work? Will the gears be the same between truck models/transmission type/gearing, and if not, how does one change gears from the broken set to the operating set? (I am thinking black friday junkyard trip.)
I will be keeping a lookout for the elusive 1991 tach cluster or even the sport cluster, but i need to get this cluster fully operational.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
