View Full Version : Finaly going to finish my fiberglass under bench box OBS truck

well i started this fiberglass floored box about 2years ago when i had my old truck... long story short i sold the truck before finishing and its been siting out in my semi trailer ever since.
just got another truck and i want my bass again... ;) and not willing to GO BIG like i used to have with deleting the rear bench.
tho i had to slightly modify the box setup but for the most part it still fits this 3rd door truck nice enough.... seems like the floor on the passenger side is slightly different and the seat bracket is alittle different so i had to cut afew inches off or so and slightly modify the frame a bit.
ive been working on glassing the floor to the frame today. i got about 2layers down on the joints which i think will be enough.
im going to also make a center brace but i need to go buy a few dowel rods for it.
it will still be afew weeks before its completely done and looking nice again. ill be building afew trim panels for it since the 3rd door hinge needs some extra cosmetic touches.
im also going to double up the front baffle where ill be mounting the subs at and do what i gotta do to flush mount them. i might TRY to have them mounted and some custom grills to protect the subs from any feet back there.... i have to do more test fitting before i figure much more custom touches... im leting the glass harden right now before i mess with it much more. i had to glass it in the truck so it all sit properly....
O YA... im going to be using TWO 12inch Alpine Type R subwoofers and for now only a small jbl 600watt amplifier till i have more money to afford a amplifier that better matches the setup.
after the glass hardends completly i need to try and find out how much air space i have in the box before i find out if i can go ported or if im stuck with it being a sealed box. i prefer ported so i hope theres enough space but it seems close so far.
i cant lift the rear bench seat anymore! ive lifted it about 4inches or so.... seems like i had more head room in my old truck that or ive grown since then.LOL im 6ft so definatly anyone about my height they dont have much headroom back there.LOL so that means women in the back.LOL
ok well enough chat. heres some picss of my project.
my seat lifts. not pretty do to the odd shape of the mounts. but strong!

slopy... yes :( was my first glass job and i used some very heavy glass which was tuff to work the resin in enough...like any newbie glasser its not pretty.LOL but it is thick and strong.

http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e250/addiction2bass/97%20C1500/subwoofer%20box/3e203d47.jpg
i will drill another hole in the bottom of my bench seat lifts to really clamp around that hinge before i bolt it solid. right now im still test fitting with every bit of progress...

^ as you can see i can still tilt the bench down BUT i can not flip it back completely like stock, BUT REALLY who tilts the bench back for anything.LOL

just letting the glass fully harden before i pull it from the truck and do anymore work.
i still have to cut the top for the box, cut sub cutouts of course to fit both 12s, and test fit more to see HOW/IF i can flush mount the subs like id like to do!
and i have to build some seat belt lift brackets as well for the center seat belts. but funds are low right now so i have to wait till next week for payday so i can buy the steel tubing i need to do it!
i dont trust any weak tubing for the seat belt safety...
i also have to order the carpet for the truck so it all matches!
i got my sample pieces the other day since i wanted it to match perfectly...
i think the first one matches best.

http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e250/addiction2bass/97%20C1500/subwoofer%20box/5773d7b3.jpg
im also thinking MAYBE using some tweed but with the interior tan color im kinda limited so it matches. :(
FLAX is the only thing i see that matches nicely.. its still up in the air about the tweed... it would just be for any future mods i might do like the door panels and headliner possibly.

and this is what ill be using. they arent perfect, but still got some nice bass, just minor cosmetic damage on the subs front cone from previous owners of them.

and yes the type Rs will fit in the box. looks like it will be close BUT it will fit ; )

I wanna see it complete. Im sure it will look good, and I see your little sample sheet from autotrim.com. I am now thinking about just doing some carpet on mine of the black, and keeping some paint showing. Looks good tho. I decided to order a box from ebay for my truck for 100$$, not bad.

ya i dont like any fiberglass anymore.LOL its easy enough to work with BUT im stuck with smelling the resin for the rest of the night when i breath.LOL
and well i did alittle more test fiting and its defiantly going to be a tight fit... ill find out more tomorrow when i actualy cut the subwoofer openings. but if i need to i still have room to simply double the front baffle. tho im really hoping it will fit with the first baffle so i can mount them flush with the doubled baffle!
i was going to do it tonight BUT im beat right now and the smell of resin stuck in my lungs well im just not feeling it. i just stood back and looked at it for awhile trying to figure it all out!
this will be the first time ill use my hole cutter piece... well i might use it with the router... gotta figure out how to mount it to my dads old @ss router.LOL but if i cannt ill at least be able to use it to draw the perfect cutout size... no more ghetto ruler and marker.LOL
^ but ya carpeting makes it all alot easier than painting a box.... paint shows all flaws, and then carpet hides ALOT! its also soft ;)
heres a funny tho. inverted sub mount...LOL J/K tho it might look cool there would be no foot space.LOL
and yes thats a sticker on the sub... it was a store return. tho it works perfect and i got a heck of a deal on it!

im pretty sure im going to go ahead and port the box. going to probably put the port right in the middle at the top since it will be the easiest place to put it since its odd shape. just going to build a quick slot port....
tho I MIGHT put the port on the backside of the box... that idea just poped into my head this minute! HUMMMmmmmmmm
im always thinking...
and i still have to install the amplifier kit. just going with a quick 4gauge kit i got nothing special like my old systems with the I/0gauge wires! just going to keep it simple/small system, im really hoping it will turn out nice! well looks ill make look nice but i mainly hope it will sound god.LOL

your not worried somebody will kick your sub???

01-04-2009, 04:32 PM
well its not hard to make them yourself if you have a welder and a hammer and a drill ;)
BUT anyways another day of work i feel that i got alot done....
took awhile to find the right cutout size for the subs BUT i got it finaly figured out.
tho my double baffle/flush trim panel i made i cut the one sub opening 2hole sizes to large and the top was to thin and broke... so ill have to make another panel but i have to buy another sheet of MDF for it... or i might just make it in 2 smaller pieces now that i think about it. my first panel i cut i screwed up because i cut it same size for the cutout sub and not for the outter cutout size to flush the subs :(

i did cut the top panel BUT i have not glued or nailed it in yet... i still have to build the port for the rear and then i will nail it in and such.... and yes it is slightly tweeked but no problem ill tweek it even
to hard to get everything square with it all custom of course.. but will be nice when done...

this morning i put my old hitch on this truck. wire brushed it all down clean and painted it in truck bed liner so hopefully it will hold up really nice! also put my little hitch cover on ;) i want to drill some holes in it for some red eyes that will blink with the turn signals ;) hahahhaa

your not worried somebody will kick your sub???
ill either make or buy some grills for them. but no im not really worried... they arent very pretty anyways and i rarely have anyone else ride in the back anyways.
i have to install everything and find out how much excursion they have at max and build or just buy a quick grill for them. just something that looks nice maybe.... tho i might now put anything over them.

Hey man, I like your idea with your hitch, and the skull with blinkers. Thats pretty cool thinking. I wanted to take mine off and repaint it also. May do something kinda similar. Looking good tho!

ya i like the cover ;) hes got some fangs and a red tongue hangen out his mouth.LOL
i might even put one led on his tonge and hopefully it lites up nicely...
BUT i cannt really do much more till friday :( im broke! my bank is to tight for comfort right now :(
i was going to buy some liquid nail BUT i needed to buy a bit for my dads router to make the sub holes. freaken 15bucks for one tiny bit :whatever:
plus my screw gun charger DIED! and with dead batteries im screwed so now i have to buy a new screw gun :( and my dad took his screw gun so i cannt just use it like i planed. hopefully i can find one cheap enough.....
was hoping to sell my bus today but its brake line blew the other day and i dont have any line wrenches to replace the busted lines.... so im selling it alittle cheaper and have them either fix or tow it off. had a guy look at it today and he said he would call me back later tonight... so far no call so not holding my breath. i might be forced to just fix it myself to sell it quicker.
was hoping to have about 700bucks to spend for some new tools but o well. ill get everything in time... i just wont be able to get the setup done so quickly.
so looks like it will at LEAST be another week till i get it done.
biggest down fall is it takes about 2hours to heat up the shop so working on it every night after work is kinda a waste of heat. and without heat out there i just feel to lazy to work on it.LOL

ok well not to much work done these past few days... yesterday i was going to build a port for the box but after running the numbers and everything i dont believe i have enough internal air space to properly port the box :(
so i decided to just seal the box for now and rock it!
so i attached the top and build a notch around the bench release handle and glued/nailed it all together!
and i also got my carpet in the mail today SHOCKINGLY FAST! since i only ordered it afew days ago!
i think it matches great.... should look like stock!
but i cannt do anything else to the box tonight because the glue and such needs to dry before i can mount the subwoofers.... something about the glue fumes when drying is bad for the subwoofers adhesives.
so FRIDAY NIGHT I SHOULD BE DONE!!!!!! im off friday so that will leave me plenty of time to build all the trim panels and i also get paid friday so ill have money to buy all the extra mdf that i need for my trim panels and such!

ive also got ONE SUPRISE that im going to TRY and pull off if a friend at work can help me out with the quick project tomorrow!
only thing i WONT be done with is the amp rack since i dont plan on keeping this 600watt amp on the subs... not sure what im going to go with yet for the final setup yet, but going to be about 1K watts rms for sure and a decent name on the amplifier. most likely im going to aim for a rockford amp.
im going to go ahead and double up the front baffle like i planned to flush mount the subs.....
i just hope my friend can help me out really quickly with the suprise tomorrow. i cannt draw for crap and i need him to do a quick outline for me.

Im drilling the holes for my subs to mount as we speak with my new drill, but I never chrged the battery :(
Anyway, I have yet to figure out where to put the amp! Maybe under my seat or something. hmmm :whatever:
Where is your amp going?

your box might look like it but im sure its not.LOL
plus my box has more internal space with the bench raised about 4inches ;)
your box probably has a raised front lip ontop of it... at least thats how the ones ive seen have been.
and well turns out my friend MIGHT be able to help me out but i might have to add it later like saturday or sunday.... my friend should be very quick with a design for me to draw up... its not going to be anything NUTS but im hoping it will turn out nice... if not ill just rip it off.LOL

Im sure your box will probably be better, but I just dont feel like making a sub box, kinda lazy and dont want to wait a month or longer. Well, I just got my subs in. I have to move my jack and the little box it is in under my seat. The threaded rod that holds it wont come off tho, I put some Penetrating spray to rid the rust off of the bottom side of my truck where the rod threads into. Hopeing it will come off, if not then I guess I will have to hack it off so I can get my box under there. Oh well.
addiction2bass
01-07-2009, 07:08 PM
that jack threaded bolt is a HUGE PITA!!!!!!!!!
you got 2 options... if you got a grinder or dremel of any kind simply flatten two sides of the shaft, LOWER THAN THE THREADS so you can always reinstall it later on. and then use some vise grips and keep cranken it!!!!!
2nd option is go to hardware store and buy 2 nuts for that thread size and jam the nuts to crank the shaft off..
just remember both ways is a HUGE PITA!!! it was not ment to be removed and it acts like it!!!!! took a ton of force to get mine out of both my trucks!!!!!! i swear they might have tried to weld it on the truck.LOL i dont believe im that weak.... but that thing still gave me a work out!
and ya making your own box can be a PITA at times.... as does anything custom. ive been a lazy fu** for my last few sub sets and just bought a built box when i could!
i tried for my truck.LOL BUT the prebuilt boxes would not fit my type R 12s. so it was either buy the box AND new subs or just finish making my own.LOL
Justv610
01-07-2009, 07:14 PM
Ahh, thanks for the warning. Well, I will see if it comes off tomroow, if not its getting cut, and then I will take a dremel to it to cut it to the floor... Yeah, I put a socket on top, and it just stripped instantly, didnt even budge. Tried vise grips too, and nothing. I think its getting cut, I can fab something up later if it ever goes back. I plan to add some custom storage boxes in my bed since I got the new bed cover, and will be putting some LED's in there also. I just keep getting ideas....that only means more $$$

Looks good. I'm sure it will rock with those two subs in it.
Justv610, I bought a box from the same guy last week and am expecting it within the end of the week. I bought the Downfiring box for one 10 inch sub. The guy seems to know what he is doing....I guess we will find out!

well ok i lied... not done today. still got another day or two left, or should i say afternoons.
i spent to much time running around today getting some tools and food. :(
i could have posibly finished it out BUT nope.... i still need to go to hardware store tomorrow and find some cheap plastic tubing for a smooth corner... i was going to use a router tool to smooth the side edge BUT with the price of the router bits compared tothe price of some cheap @ss plastic piping.LMFAO
so i just have to find the right size pipe to match the factory trims curve!
but i do have the box in the truck and also have the amp kit ran and wired up and did alittle testing...
tho the amplifier and amp wiring is just laying behind the seat for now and i just used some selfdriling screws to hold the amplifier to the back wall since im just to lazy right now to fab up awhole wall for the rear....
tho i didnt get any pictures before i quite for the night :(
and the bench will not fold back anymore.... it will fold down and fold up afew inches but the middle of the bench hits the top piece of the box. but no big deal since it wont fold up anyways from the extended seat brackets. ;)
BUT IT ALL FITS ;)
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e250/addiction2bass/97%20C1500/subwoofer%20box/97d0abc4.jpg
tho i must say MY CAMERAS VIDEO MODE SUCKS!!!! trust me audio sounds MUCH BETTER IN PERSON!!!!!!!!
http://s40.photobucket.com/albums/e250/addiction2bass/97%20C1500/subwoofer%20box/
still uploading the videos right now. just afew shorties....
im still up in the air about porting it..... i believe there is enough room behind the bench to add some more airspace and the port for the box in the rear... maybe a future mod. i have to do some actual driving and beating around awhile before i decide.
cannt really test and tune very well with only afew cds and inside the shop.LOL even my radio sucks with all the steel in the shop!
i need to at least put my ipod in the truck!
ill get more pictures up tomorrow night when i get more of my trim panels built. main thing holding me up was that one curve im trying to match. if i can match that curve the rest will be easy!
my favorite bass note right at the end ;)

I bought a downfiring one from ebay that came in yesterday. It looks good and solid and I'll install it Monday when the sub comes in. I'll take a few pictures too. The guy I bought it from (musicmoose) makes good stuff....fit perfectly.

I have some bazooka subs from when I first bought my truck. I got a package deal like 200 for the box, subs, and amp. I may upgrade down the road, but this is plenty for my truck now. I think it sounds good.
Mine is installed, and it sounds really good! I just need some grills to protect the subs.

ya prefab boxes are usualy all pretty decent for most systems! only problem ive ever had with the prefab boxes ive bought is air leaking around the joints... and thats very easy to solve with some liquid nail all around the inside joints of the box, just let the glue dry and next day put the subs back in and rock em... ;)
ok well anyways. G2G back to work on the trucks cosmetics.... i got some pipes that I HOPE will turn out nice on that curve!
only downfall is i got a guy coming back to SUPOSEDLY fix the brake lines on the bus and drive it off for 550bucks. im hoping he does come back but it is kinda cold out there and misty out so who knows. hes suposed to be here any minute now.
i hope he does come and buy it today so i can put the money in the back tomorrow and buy the flush GMC billet grill that i want so bad! ;)

well so far hardly any work done.... i did alittle bit of the trim panel but screwed around with the bus guy for about 3hours trying to get the bus started. :( with no luck just frozen fingers and feet!
at least i did get the curved part tweeked out. i used the plastic pipe and it worked great.
ill try to get some work done tomorrow but im gonna also try to work on the bus a bit and hopefully get it fired up so i can get some money!
and i did some driving in the truck and so far IM DEFINITIVELY GOING TO ADD THE PORT LATER ON!!!!!!
it does sound nice BUT I KNOW IT CAN SOUND SO MUCH BETTER!!!!!!!
and definatly need to upgrade the grounds and such and maybe even the alt. i should not have dimming with only 600watt amplifier!!!!!!! but i do! total crap.LOL

I have dimming with a 300 watt amp. My subs only push 300 watts.... That is only when I have it blasted. Doesnt bother me too much tho.

well i defiantly dont like it on my truck.LOL
ill upgrade the grounds and maybe the alternators charging wire and hopefully taht will be enough....
tho i do have 2 yellow top optimas right now. i need to put the primary battery with the yellow top and wire up the secondary battery. that should at least keep my amplifier in a safe voltage range!

O YA.... simple swap of spark plugs and the bus fired right up with no problems ;)
so guy came back and drove it off and i got paid. ;) so thats another 550bucks i got for my truck!
so after all maybe a week before im done with the build.... and i have decided to go ahead and port the box defiantly, shouldnt be to bad..... ill just build onto the box in the rear to add alittle extra space and the port, that should give me a nice size box to be able to port it and sound good.... i wont get much done tomorrow because i have to handle some business for my parents after work..... and stop by the bank myself to put my new money in it. ;)
but tuesday ill defiantly have a update of work done!!!!!! im off work ;)

Did you make those seats lifts? Could I get the specs of the lift brackets?
addiction2bass
01-13-2009, 09:14 AM
yes i made them myself but i dont have much specs for them.... the hinges have a odd shape to them so what i used was some square steel tubing and some flat steel and simply bent the flat steel over the tubing basicaly and just hammered it onto the bench seat bracket to get that perfect shape, then with some tach welds, i checked for fitment and hammered a bit more or grinded a bit till it fit. the welded it all, the i used more flat steel and bent it around a bit on a bench and vise and test fited it around the hinge and bent it to fit better and then tach welded it to the tubing.
and of course depends on the between length to how much you want to lift the bench! and only thing left to do is slide the lifts into the seats and mark the holes on the top point and slide the lift over the bottom and measure out basicaly where that lower hole needs to be drilled.
and when you bolt them in i HIGHLY SUGGEST you use some hardened bolts and nuts and washers on top and bottom... because when you tighten down the lifts it will bend the metal a bit for a tighter fit and those hardened bolts give you plenty of force to crank those bolts tight without snapping! ;)
ok so heres a few build pics i took when i built them about o dam occording to the picture date about 4years ago now.LOL

ok well i got the trim panels pretty much built... i didnt brace the bottom of the curve so it slightly poped in when i was tucken the carpet... so i might have to pop it and brace it back out if/when i pull the box out for work.....
but i decided to do it alittle different.... i was going to cut the carpet and tuck it around the subs BUT i decided not to after all.LOL
i might keep it like this also... it just depends how the fabric stretches out over some time... if it stretches to much and kinda looks bad then ill cut it and tuck it around the subs.
time will tell.LOL
well enough chat.. heres the pics.

I think it would be much cleaner if you threw the cutout in the garbage.
good work on the finished product

very nice, very nice. I was gonna ask, where are the subs but then went up and read and realized they are hidden under the carpet. Good idea. Are you worried about friction on the subs from bumping the carpet? Anyway, it looks really good.
addiction2bass
01-15-2009, 04:38 PM
no not to worried about rubbing on the surrounds of the sub.... one they are not very pretty already.... two the carpet stretches rather easy so if it pushes on it to much it should stretch it out just fine.
tho when i port the box i might have to cutout the carpet like the box should be.LOL just because with the ported box the subwoofer since its breathing easier will probably have alot longer throw to it. and if i wanted to keep the hidden look id have to add another 3/4 of mdf to the front and recarpet it again. its a thought that wont be hard to do.
im just waiting till it gets alittle warmer out before i build the port for it!
