View Full Version : painting portion of early OBS dash

i bought a console for my truck from another member, and im planning on painting it as its the wrong color. its sort of a greyish tan, and my interior is blue. i'm thinking of painting the bottom portion of it black, and just installing my blue pieces on the top (broken base on my original). in my mind, it will look out of place unless i do something else to tie it in.
what i've got going on in my head is removing the glove box door, HU surround, vent on the passenger side, and the two pieces that wrap around the bottom of the gauge cluster. i'll then paint them black to match.
does anyone have any pictures of dashes with a similar treatment? other colors would be fine, just so i can actually see what it will look like with different colors.

not exactly what i was looking for, especially of your crotch mounted HVAC controller. looking to paint the pieces around the head unit, the peice that extends under the cluster housing, glovebox, and the vent on the passenger side. so basically i'll have a black stripe completely across the dash, with the top of the dash, and the bottom of the dash remaining blue.

:word: on the black bezel and HVAC. Looks a lot cleaner, and will help tie the black in.
1.Scrub all parts with Spray nine, and fingernail brush.
2.Wash all parts with dish detergent and warm water.
3.Wipe down with 3M general purpose adhesive cleaner.
The grey dash (main portion) was painted in '03.

what kind of paint do you recomend BHB? the interior dye, or something else?
This is the only type of spray dye I have ever used (since 1992)

That stuff is the best stuff in the world. Literally nothing else could even dream of being as good. If they quit making it I will simply never paint another piece of the inside of any vehicle. Anyone that tells you to use something else is only telling you to use inferior products so that your project will not look as good as theirs did because they used SEM.

My dash sounds like you describe. I got some black paint a few months ago to change my interior from blue and never got around to pulling the dash, so the door panels dash, and seats are blue, everything else is black. It will look better once I finish but here's a picture.

That's hilarious; it wasn't until I read your response that I even noticed the HVAC control was sitting on the dude's crotch. I see dude crotch and I guess I just automatically ignore it. But YOU saw it. :aniteef: :aniteef:

I use SEM on everything. Its great stuff! Did my whole interior in black. Just make sure you prep as directed. No other dye compares IMO.

I just used duplicolor, but it hasn't held up well on the kick panels. I couldn't find SEM but I want to try it on the rest of the interior.
Use The SEM landau black. It's a semi gloss, looks natural, and doesn't look armor alled.

I get SEM at the local paint supply place but you can also get it here, it’s actually cheaper online then it is for me to get it local.
