I have had my 98 GMC for quite some time. I have always wondered what would be in the removable pannel on the front of the upper console on the roof.

Does anyone know or was it for optional rear ac controls on a tahoe/sub?

Little info, 98 gmc upper console has a spot for I think tissues, garage door clicker, sunglassed and has map lites.

Just wondering

Thanks.

Some had rear controls there. If not, then there's nothing there, other than a plug that plugs into nothing. :dunno:

Yes the rear AC controls fit in the front. I actually have the controls from my overhead console for sale right now because I swapped in a blank plate.

I always thought it might be for a digital compass or some type of trip read out.

Thanks!

What overhead do you have? Is the blank less than an inch, or is it bigger than two inches? If it's the smaller, then an S-10 compass/thermo will physically fit perfectly, and might be able to be retrofitted to operate, but there's no OEM option of this that I'm aware of.

It is smaller of the two then, approximatly an inch with a taper on both ends. I have the compass now in my mirror so I will probably do nothing with it.

Thanks for the info.
