I installed blue LEDS in my dash and I'm pretty happy with the results. I had hyperwhites before, but they showed a teal color through my NR whiteface gauges. Here are the pics.

Makes me wanna go take my dash apart right now...
I got all the tools...but ya know...campus safety might not like having a guy in the parking lot with a flashlight digging in the dash of a truck...*sigh*

the leds came from www.superbrightleds.com They had the best prices I could find. They were even cheaper than the hyperwhites I had. I used the 4 led wedge based bulb.
Thanks. I read one of your old posts regarding installing the bulbs you had before LEDs. Do the LEDs go in the same way or are there any modding that needs to be done?

Has anyone done this with a 88-93????? They have the green plastic pieces to give u the green color, but u can just cut them out or unscrew em, but i guess it should still look good, anyone have pics of a 88-93??

Pretty much. There is nothing to burn out. They dont get hot either. No clue how they work, but they're cool like that.... :head:
Sweet:D So just order what you need and that's it. No extras needed for burn outs!

Thanks. I read one of your old posts regarding installing the bulbs you had before LEDs. Do the LEDs go in the same way or are there any modding that needs to be done?
No, the bulbs I ordered are direct LED replacements for 194's. I did the same procedure as I did the last time I posted.
One thing I did different was that I used new twist in bases. I didn't want to deal with threading the wires through the little holes and bending them onto the contacts like I had to do with the stock bases. With my old setup, sometimes when I would hit a big bump, one of my lamps would go out until I hit anther big bump.
With the new twist in bases, all I had to do was push the bulb into the base and then insert the whole thing into the gauge... thats it! The bases are made by AutoMeter, the same company that makes gauges. The part # is 3212. I also found them at Pepboys, made by Sylvania, but they were $8 a pop and you need six of them. Summit had them for half that price. I'm sure if you do some web sufing, you could find them even cheaper.
One thing about the LEDs is that they are polarity sensitive, so if you plug it in and it doesn't light up, just flip the bulb.
HENRY

Could you please post what part number you ordered?
And are those for all 99+ trucks too?
Thanks for all your help. I'll post some pics when I get it done. I'v got the 02 silver Escalade guages so it should look kinda cool.

02-15-2003, 04:24 AM
If you decide to get the new twist sockets, the Autometer part # is 3212.
The part # for the LEDs was WLED-B4 Blue from www.superbrightleds.com
I don't know about the old body styles, but they should fit in all the new bodies.
That looks great, you need to do a tech article on it :rocking: :head:

Also, the 88-93's take the 194 too.

I have a question about this pic :read:
http://www.anythingcars.com/members/chane/gauge7.jpeg
Is that what the 1997 Tahoe will look like when I change the bulbs? And do I just set it in or twist it into place or move the metal leads? And I will be getting Blue LED's so are those the same as regular 194 bulbs or different in the way they install? Thanks...Mike :D

Yes, exactly. Installation is identical to the '99+ trucks. I'll be doing the same thing once my LEDs show up that I ordered Monday. :D There are also 6 bulbs on our clusters, just like the '99+ trucks.

I posted this question in my thread too, but is there any way to change out the lights behind the AC and headlight controls? They light up white factory, is there any way to change them to another color, would it be just like the guage ones? Also is there any way to change out the radio display color, or is that impossible to do?
Thanks,

Hey kylesZ71, I think you were the one that inspired me to do the bulb swap.
Here another pic for you guys. If you don't want to have to modify your bulb to fit in the stock sockets, you can get these Autometer sockets pn# 3212. They are direct plug and play.
Stock on the left vs. Autometer 3212
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid51/p5bcd20225a4c6183d1a1a3f227b586b9/fc9de522.jpg
In the pic, the Autometer looks a little burnt, but it's not. It's brand new and has a satin finish. I think it looks that way because of the flash on the satin finish.

Ok i did a search and found that theres not real way to change the lights behind the AC or 4WD lights, I wouldnt mind leaving them white but is there any way to change the color of the radio display from that teal color on the factory radios? Wouldnt it look weird for the radio to be teal and the guages to be red?!?
thanks,

no chevy just does that from the factory - bending them works fine, i really dig the Autometer 3212 the 99+ stock bulbs are hard to get out, you need a needle and kinda gotta use strength to do it. But its a simple install thats fun to do. good find black_yukon

I ordered me some leds Sat. I got a couple PIAA leds the other day and tried them in my third brake light and it blew the fuse:confused: so I just put them in the map lights in the overhead console. They are really bright. I can't wait to get my other ones. They aren't PIAAs though, they're too proud of their stuff.
black_yukon
02-19-2003, 10:45 PM
Copper98, how much were those PIAA's. The cheapest I found them was like $10.00 a piece. I'm glad I found this other source.
As far as the sockets go, they aren't necessary, but they make the install much easier. No cutting the leads on the stock bulb/sockets and no bending the wires around, just plug in the bulbs, plug in the socket, twist, and your ready to go. If it doesn't light up, pull out the socket, turn 180 degrees and try again. LED's are polarity sensitive.
I got them from Summit for about $4.00 a piece and you need 6 of them. I also found them at Autozone, but they were made by Sylvania and were $7.00 a piece.

I read on another post that it was pretty much impossible to change those and that you cant get any colored replacments. Also, they said that if you removed them you would have to get new ones because they wouldnt just plug back in, do a search you should find it! Just a warning!!

No more PIAA's for me!
They are overrated and way overpriced.
Iv'e been suckerd in to buying them from there claims ( no colored glass ) ???
I have two H4 SuperWhite bulbs that the coloring blistered on

Btw these led's are the best quality diode's I'v ever seen.
Great find! Large selection! A must buy.

I am going to do mine in blue.:D I'll spend and extra 10 bucks and see what the yellow ones are like at night.
btw, why would the yellow and red LEDs be cheaper($1.59) than the green, blue and white ones($2.59)? less popular maybe?

black-yukon, I paid $15 a pair, and that is with a discount that I get at my old place of employment. This was before I read this post so I didn't know any better. After I saw what you did to your gauges, I went lookin' for some cheaper priced leds. Thanks for the link by the way.
the swivel map lights in the overhead console are 194s. I just put some leds in there and they are really bright. Alot better than the ones that were in there.

FYI for all the '95-'98 guys planning to do the LEDs:
I just checked the new cluster I have laying around that the LEDs are going in and if you're considering being lazy and buying those AutoMeter sockets, don't waste your money. There are no wires to cut on the stockers and you don't even have to bend the wires on the new replacements. I checked all 6 of the bulbs and they're like this. I pulled the DRL bulb because I don't want it on anymore, and I did have to cut that one out, but not the rest of the bulbs you'll be worried about.

It may have something to do with how they have to make them to get the colors. A few months ago on the local news there was a bit about the city replacing a lot of the traffic lights with LEDs. They said that most intersections wouldn't get green LEDs even if they have the red and amber because the green lights cost about twice as much as the red and amber.
Sure this is a much smaller scale, but I'm sure it's basically the same thing and applies to both blue and green.

I haven't ordered the festoons yet so I'm not sure. I called and they said they were replacements for 211-2's which are the size needed.
As far as the metal reflectors, I needed to pull them out to get the stockers out. Just put them back in and hold them in place, then insert the bulb. The bulb should hold it in place.

Makes sense.
I took a look at some of the stoplights that have been converted to LEDs, and they seem to be all LEDs. I don't think I've seen a stoplight with red and yellow LEDs and a bulb for green, but I'm not exactly examining every stop light I see. I guess us Angelinos went all out when changing the stoplights. :D

We have quite a few that have green LEDs here, surprisingly.

I've seen them in a few places in Dallas/Ft Worth. A lot of times the strobes are used at intersections that are accident-prone. The strobes grab the attention of the driver and makes them look at the red light. I proved this point to my wife one time. I told her to look down at the floorboard. She couldn't see the traffic signal when doing this, but she could damn well see that strobe flashing.

True,
I have first changed my blubs to red, then blue, now LED...
Take you time and make sure all the connections are on good and you will be fine. I have never seen mine flicker or turn off once :head: :read:
