I'm working on designing a stealth face install for my new system. I'm thinking about hinging a piece of gray plastic(to match dash) that folds out of the way when the screen on the Alpine 7897 folds out. It will still be mounted in the "normal" location..

but with a piece to cover the hole when the car is turned off, sound like a good/possible idea? I think if I get a nice flush mount it will work.

Does the face not detach? If a thief wants something out of your car, nothing will stop him. Wouldn't hurt anything though.

nope, the face doesn't detach, it slides into itself and looks like it has been detatched. I might just tint the windows(which I need to do anyway) and call it quits.

I have a dash exactly like yours, and as far as I'm concerned, no matter what I do its got going to be very theft deterrant. I dont know stereo manufacturers just dont build a heavy duty lug on the back of the unit or have something like they have for laptops that sticks into a slot in the side, then have a cable that loops around the steering column or something. Mines in there pretty poorly, I can get it out in no time. Luckily, its a POS that nobody would probably want to steal anyway.

They had the 4 year old Alpine face halfway out of my suburban before they got chased off when I opened the garage door :(

you could always do like a friend of mine did. He's got a truck with the same dash as yours in it and he took his old kenwood with the motorized stealth face on it. closed it up and carefully painted the back of the face as well as the trim ring around it to match the dash. When it's turned off and flipped over it looks like it's part of the dash. You can't even tell it's a radio....
