If you want a good idea of what 20% will look like on your truck, check out the factory tint on extended cabs and SUVs and stuff. That's about 20% right there. Way too light for me. :D

On my truck I have 5% on the doors, double 5% on the back glass and an 11" 5% eyebrow.

On the Yukon I have 5% on the front doors, 5% on top of all the factory tint which comes out to 1% and a 5" 5% eyebrow.

Here's some pics of a tint job or two that I've had. :D I don't have pics of my current setup but it's about a 10'' 20% eyebrow and 5% + 35% tint all around. It's SolarGuard tint and metered at 1%. Here's some pics of the setups I've had since August, in order:

10% on rear, 35% on sides :gone2far: :D
http://www.proidt.com/silverado/tint/1.jpg

20% all around: It's not really dark at all
http://www.proidt.com/silverado/tint/2.jpg

20% all around Pic #2: Looks darker than it really is. You can still see the streaks on the glass since it was just installed.
http://www.proidt.com/silverado/tint/3.jpg

20% + 5% on rear, 20% on sides
http://www.proidt.com/silverado/tint/4.jpg

5% + 5% on rear, 5% on sides
http://www.proidt.com/silverado/tint/5.jpg

5% + 5% on rear, 5% + 35% on sides, front 6'' 5% eyebrow. You can see it's solid black.
http://www.proidt.com/silverado/tint/6.jpg

Same tint, more recent pic.
http://www.proidt.com/silverado/tint/6a.jpg

This is definitely different but really didn't work -- 20% charcoal tint with 20% mirror tint layered behind it. No one I talked to had seen it done before so I tried it. It reflected back heavily even during the day and didn't look much different so I took it off. The most noticeable characteristic of it was that it did reflect alot more on the exterior as well and did look pretty cool.
http://www.proidt.com/silverado/tint/7.jpg

Closeup of same tint:
http://www.proidt.com/silverado/tint/8.jpg

As you can see it reflects back alot more than regular charcoal tint. That looks like mirror tint in the pic but it's really layered behind it. That's the same eyebrow I have now.
http://www.proidt.com/silverado/tint/9.jpg

My worst idea ever, 5% mirror tint all around. Impossible to see in and very easy to see out even at night but it looked like crap.
http://www.proidt.com/silverado/tint/10.JPG

I can get some pics of my current setup if you want them...

I agree, that mirror tint was disgusting. I think I didn't get pulled over because the cops felt sorry for the idiot that would actually put that on a truck :read:  Or they knew it would eventually be coming off anyway :read:

I need to keep receipts of my tint jobs with me so I can show the cop that I replace it every month anyway :read:

It varies. I've had 2 different meters put on the same tint job once and one read 4% and the other read 6%. Anytime I've been stopped for it it's always been between 3 and 6%.

It doesn't take long to get used to it. It's not as bad as you would think. Driving a car without tint at night is murder now when cars are behind me with their headlights. It's cool never having to hit the hi-angle on the rearview or hold my hand over the outside mirrors.

My rear view has a hi-angle??? :D :D :D

Believe it or not 5% is NOT that dark as people make it out to be. The above quoted homo knows what he's talking about - after having dark tint, then you ride in your friends car with NO tint and the cars are behind you blinding you and sh|t.... makes you not want to ride with anyone else. I don't think my mirror has dimmed (auto-dim) since i tinted my windows now that i think about it

Tint is the FIRST thing that will EVER go on any vehicle of mine. It makes a world of difference and is relatively cheap.

I think it'd be fine on the streets and highway as long as everyone around is smart enough to turn their lights on at night, but how about when backing up on dark, unlit roads or worse, poorly lit crowded parking lots?

With a single layer of 5, such as on my car and what my wife had on her car, backing up is not an issue. Especially with backup lights. On the wife's Yukon with 5 on top of the factory 20 (figuring up to 1%) it's still not a big deal to me. Every once in a while I'll need to roll down the windows and use the mirrors, but not usually. But on my truck with double 5 on the back, I have to roll the windows down to back up at night. It's not any real hassle and is no big deal at all to me. The same things apply to parking lots. Like I said, it doesn't take long to get used to it. Kind of a peripheral benefit of the tint is that it really makes you more aware of your surroundings. When you're parked in that dark, crowded parking lot at night, you'll take a quick glance at your surroundings and know where the cars, carts, and obstacles are before you even get in your car. You'll notice that dark shadow of a car behind you with no headlights on and keep an eye on it. And you can flip off that a$$hole riding your bumper without him seeing it making you feel all warm and fuzzy inside and him not knowing any difference. :D

i never could even tell the factory tint was back there :naughty:

I originally had just my fronts done at 15% to match the factory backs...which made the back windows look totally clear :whyme: so i put 15% over the stock 20% or whatever it is, MUCH better :D but i find myself wanting to go darker already

i feel bad posting my tint percentage on here. Mine is at 32 on the sides and front, and 20% on the rear. It doesnt block out that much light during the day and lights blind me at night. this summer when i get a little bit of money, i will get the redone to 5% all the way around. Just too light for me.

I think thats what I have now...35% all the way around...or whatever is legal to Fl standards. How dark would it be if I did like yall said and laid 5% over it? Can I just get it laid on top of it, or do I have to get them to take off the old to put the new on? And how often do yall get pulled over lol? I wanna get something darker for a change. How much do yall rekon it'll cost?

.05 times .35 equals .0175 or 1.75 %

So i would need about 15% on top of the 35% to make roughly 5%. can u see through 5%? I wanna get something darker than what I got. I just dont wanna get pulled over everyday.

yes, that would give you roughly 5%

however, the thing with tint seems to be that once you get it, you are like "wow, this is so dark! i shouldn't have done this!"

then a day later "man, i should have gone darker :( "

then a week later "yeah, i want to get another layer put on" then you pull out your wallet again :D

I guess what i'm trying to say is go with what you really want and not what you think you "need" If you go with 5% overall you'll be illegal and possibly get a ticket, if you go with 5% over the 35%, you'll still be illegal, but happily illegal :D

I have factory tint on my back with 15% on top of it, so roughly 3% overall, and i already want darker because you can see through the back window still from behind the truck :(

I think i might end up putting another layer of 35% just on the back glass when i get some more money :)

hope i helped you some...

Depends on the lighting conditions whether or not you can see into 5%. Sometimes you can... but mostly up near the steering wheel from light coming in the windshield if any... I wish i had gone darker the first time. I had 15% for about a year. Now have it layered to get approx. 5% and wish i had gone with 5% over 35% or 20% but i'll get it redone later. If you don't give the police a reason to pull you over - most times they will leave you alone (except if your name is 1badgmc :D) I've had to regulate my driving habbits (i.e. speeding/noise with pipes and or system/ect..) 5% will be fine for most people... i'm just a lil obsessed i guess... Maybe we can start a support group for the tint fareaks here :D :D :D

a big :word: on that one .. i had 15% on my windows and was debating going darker... then i had a simple thought... i'm already illegal... why not go way illegal and be happy. So i went with 5% on all 5 windows (crew cab) ... then started thinking . "man, it would be cool to do some of my windshield .. so i had two 5% strips done on the top and bottom of my windshield. .... I'm happy... but want darker on the sides and back

edit - here is a pic of what i'm talking about on my windshield

I have 5% + 35% on all my windows and then a 10'' eyebrow on the front, it was real dark film even for 35% and measured at 1%. I've had illegal tint for only about a year but I've been pulled over twice in my truck and only messed with once for the tint, but no ticket either time. The first time the cop was reaaaaly checking it out but he didn't even say anything. At the time I was pulled over I had double 5% on the back and 5% + 35% on the sides. The 35% + 5% is real easy to see out of. It may take a few days to get used to if you have 35% or not tint now but I never have to roll my windows down or anything to see out like I did with the double 5...it's the perfect combo IMO. It didn't take me getting used to at all, in fact it seemed kind of light. But from almost all lighting and angles it appears nearly solid black.

BTW, don't waste any time or money with Gila tint. It's the same brand they sell at Autozone. I bought some 5% one time and it was total garbage. There's really no reason to make 2.5% tint anyway, unless you want to double layer it. 2.5% by itself isn't dark enough so why not just layer 5% plus something else?

I know you have to get metallized tints too, or else it'll turn purple. SolarGard (MSC), 3M Scotchtint, and Llumar are the only brands I know of that make metallized so all the rest are dyed and turn purple.

SolarGard :rocking:

That's what I have now and out of all the tints I've run this one has the best "interior tint/look to it." I've ran a few different types of 3M (which faded quickly I might add), and I've ran Llumar and a couple others as well.

Been tint hounds for many moons...back in the 80's my bud and I wouldn't even tint a piece of glass without taking it out of the vehicle for the ultimate sanitary install of the "dark sheets". We used to double layer 5% trimbrite all the time...the results were very satisfying. :head: Remember this is before tint was big like it is now. A big yes to darker is better...Gorilla (Gila) tint is junk always has been...solarguard is very user friendly for the do-it-yourselfer...prep, cleanliness, and patience are the keys to a nice result. There is no tint hassle here, unless your doing something else stupid. The...ahem...privacy has cum in handy many times over the years...along those lines...I can't stand to drive anywhere in a vehicle with clear or light glass. After having 1-3% all around on my vehicles for so many years (yes, including the beaters...absolutely) I feel damn NAKED without it. :D Tint on bros.........
