I have a 02 GMC with an X-pipe exhaust, flowmasters, and turndowns out of the mufflers. I would like to know if removing the turndowns and running pipes out the rear (Hidden with no tips) would change HP/Torque.. I have had a couple of guys tell me that when they removed the turn-downs and added pipes the gained for torque. What do you guys know about this setup???

i used to have straight pipes on mine, with true duals, and exit out the back. then i put on a dual in/out flowmaster. finally, i cut off the pipes and put on some turndowns. with rear exit pipes or without, i couldnt really tell a difference in power, only sound

From what I know and have heard  , it should give you more torque. Something about the pipe length and scavenging affect  ? I have my pipes all the way back but don't have large echo tips. I bought some premade turn downs at PepBoys and had them installed. The pipes on my truck look like the ones on a Crown Victoria cop car, just a little tip poking out from under the rear bumper. It should also decrease the sound level inside and push it more towards the back of the truck, instead of under the truck.

those headers were made to work with muffler and tailpipe.

Thanks... Im going to try it out and test both setups on the dyno.. Feather foot..... What type of exhaust did he have on the truck when he was tuning out those headers??? And did you see the write-up about my header install??

I had alot of exhaust problems that he might need to know about..
Thanks again.

I read your post and we are looking at the problems.
Whose muffler do you think he was using? He won't build an exhaust system with any thing else. PV of course!!

That is a Good Question allot of people often wonder about and dont ask ! I found it out on my Camero and did the Same on my Truck if you run a down pipe yes its louder but in some cases you do loose torque but if you have the engine to make up for it dumps will work. If the motor is mostly stock which in newer trucks isnt bad Run your pipe out towards the back but just as you get over the rearend end it therefore you dont see the pipe but get that sound that makes skin crawl across your back and of course MORE TORQUE ! ! ! !

I tested both turn-downs and pipes and the results was better for the turn-downs. I ran 3 times with pipes and 3 times with out. I was able to remove the pipes at the track. I was just over a tenth faster with out the pipes..

ok I have gotten a few responding to the tailpipe or turndown question ! Well earlier I had a respond from a certain person in here and they told me what helped them ! they have a newer truck and at the Track Turn downs helped them well that could be true I believe him. My situtation took place with 2 vehicles 1st my Camero and 2nd my truck. I had my truck to start off with longtube headers dual 1 chamber flowmasters and ran out the back well I ran about a mid 9 in the 8th now at the moment we speak 1 is out the side and the other is just over the rearend and dumped with that done to a 89 chevy silverado I noticed it did take a little off my time it is now running low 9's I klnow that isnt much but in racing every sec means allot ! . Now a friend of mine has a 00 Silverado and he ran dumps and it helped him big time so I assume the newer trucks and the torgue that the engine gives has something to do with it !

I admit that he ran a better time then I did but sense then I have found transmission problems that might have played a factor in the times. I ran mid 14.7's with the pipes off and mid 14.8's with them on. You must also take in consideration the mods that we both have. I admit that I was not pleased with the way my truck was running on that night. Things WILL be different next time.. ;) .

All my stuff should be on my truck by then. Hollar at me sometime and let me know whats going on with the truck and what you found out about the tranny.
