i decided to re-paint my interior using a gun this time. i have a few questions. do i have to mix a flex agent with the paint?? and when i scratch up the plastic and vinyl peices, do i have to smooth them out? or will the paint do all the work in making it look smooth. if anyone cares to look, i am going for a look similar to the first truck seen here:

has anybody actually acheived something like this and how permanent is it??(scratching off, rubbing off, etc). anyway, thanks alot if anybody replies. i really am serious about getting this done but i need to straighten a few things out first. thanks again!!

p.s. i was reading the sticky for painting interiors and it said you have to 'glass over where the vinyl is. is this really true???? i have seen alot of interiors (obs) and the vinyl peices are as smooth as the dash. is it possible that they 'glassed all of those peices??(glovebox, etc) aaahhhhh now im lost again!!!!!!!!!

When I did mine, I did not smooth out the pieces. I sanded and cleaned everything, and used ALOT of adhesision (sp?) promoter. I sprayed it with auto body paint, did the wet sand, paint, wet sand, paint steps. Then I did SEVRAL layers of clear.

The grain and texture of the dash add a nice wrinkle/snake look to the painted areas, especially with the metallic flake in it. The clear is thick enough that it is smooth.

Looking at it, it looks textured, but running your hand over it, it is smooth as can be. Really unique looking...

with my interior i am smoothing everything out and having 5-8chevy paint it with factory gm maroon paint..im sanding my interior down with actually 220 gritt cause its knocking it down great....with my vynil i actualyl glassed it in order to make it smooth..if your going to do your vynil i would suggest that versus sanding it cause it wont come out right..

Dude! Why are you asking this again? We just went through all of the prep stuff in this thread... http://www.fullsizechevy.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=93281
If you want it smooth, yea, you can sand the plastic down or prep it like I said and blow on some primer surfacer and sand that smooth but, you have to have it sanded smooth or all of your sanding scratches will show through the paint. Final sanding should be done with at least 600 grit to get good tooth for the top coat and a smooth finish.
