View Full Version : Toying with ABS?

I'm curious if anyone on this board has, or knows of anyone who has, retrofitted ABS onto an older pickup truck?

I'm looking at buying a '67 LWB chevy CST/10 2wd (4 wheel manual drums baby) and am interested at the prospect of adding anti-lock brakes to it. I just purchased a Raybestos guide to domestic abs systems (1200 pages) to get a feel for and electronic diagrams of the system installed in the late 80's-early 90's chevy trucks, since this doesn't seem to be integrated into the ECM like later model years. I'm up for a challenge - my last truck, a '72 C10, I did a full TBI swap with 454 TB, and did all the wiring myself. Although I'm only 19, I've been playing with electronics since I was about 3 and have picked up quite a bit of experience along the way. I figure if I'm going to improve on the horsepower (which I definitely did with the last truck) I should probably also increase my stopping ability. That and trailering in incliment weather without abs just plain sucks.

At the very least, I figure I'll end up either:
1) swapping the whole front member/suspension onto the old trucks frame
2) re-machining the front spindles to accept disks and the hall effect sensors that take speed readings

In addition, I'll expect to also need:
OBS master cylinder & brake booster
ABS "pump"
ABS computer
wiring/connectors
hall effect sensors
new brake lines

Parts from these trucks are near dirt-cheap and plentiful at a local pick-a-part, so I won't have trouble finding them.

My other question is, is there any way to play with variables on the ABS computer in the OBS trucks, like people are doing now with the EEPROM's? I'm sure that there is room to tune for better/taller/wider tires than the factory ones, mostly I'm just curious...if nothing else it would be interested to be able to log the ABS system activity to see what its doing.
