infitity kappa and reference series sound great too but i wouldn't reccomend them unless you are planning on putting an amp on your speaks.

It all depends on how much you want to spend. I'll agree that the Infinity Reference series is probably the one of the best. I had a set of 4x6 coaxials in the dash of my truck for four years. They took so much abuse! I finally sold them to a buddy of mine and their still in his truck and still sound as good as the day I bought them.

With the stock head unit, you'll be hard pressed to find a decent set of speakers that will work well. Most aftermarket speakers are designed with allowances for some sort of amplification. You head unit doesn't have any noticable amplification.

You might want to consider adding a line level converter which will allow you to run a small amp...say 30x2 and power your speakers nicely.

I'm not sure of the speaker placement in your truck off the top of my head, but I believe that you have a seperate location for your tweeter..if that is the case, I would definitely look into a set of component speakers such as JL Audio...that's what I'm currently running in my rig.

And get 10 different answers!!! :dunce:

I've got Boston Accoustics in my truck - 14 total in the cab with 900+watts pushing them. I am an avid listener of really load music and I have yet to blow a speaker... I've had my system for 2 years now! :)

Good luck!!!:D

I have a similar question. I have a 2001 Extended Cab Silverado. I know the back takes a 4x6 and the front is a 5 1/4 with a separate tweeter. Does anyone know if the back is a two-way and will a two-way go in as a replacement? Also, with the front being two separate speakers, I know a component set is the way to go. But, how would a crossover supplied with replacement speakers be utilized and implemented? Thanks.

To answer your first question...any speaker will go in there as long as it is a 4x6. Most 4x6 are coaxials or two ways. I knew of only one that was just a midbass, but the company went out of business so I don't know of anyone currently producing a 4x6 midbass.

I'm not quite clear of your second question...but i'll try to answer it best I can.

A quality component set will have a crossover supplied with it. Usually these take your original two wires from your factory system and then splits the signal to the tweeter and to the mid bass speaker.

That being said...look for a quality cross over. It should have an adjustable tweeter control...usually like a 0, -2, -4 setup to attenuate the tweeter to your listening tastes. Some like a more brite tweeter and some like a more subdued tweeter.

Some companies...I know Memphis for one uses a light bulb to keep the tweeter from blowing when your really jamming to the music. ..I think boston acoustics does too...not to sure on the one.

I hope this has helped.

ive got JL audio components in the door and they sound great. boston acoutics and mb quart are also very good speakers, you will probably need an amp no matter what aftermarket speakers you get.

OK. Thanks so far. Great responses. Let me clarify the second part of my question. I would like to upgrade my system in stages starting with the speakers (I'm in the Army=poor). The front door speakers are what appears to be component speakers with two wires running to the "woofers" and a second set of wires running to the tweeters. So coming from the factory HU is there already some sort of "built-in" cross-over? Hence my question, if I get an after market component set, where would this crossover fit into the equation or would I leave out the aftermarket crossover until I upgrade the HU at which time I know I would need to install it? Thanks in advance for the responses.

no crossover from the factory side, but most component sets will come with a crossover.

The kicker impulse 5 1/4 and nd25 tweeters I have came with a crossover.

You can run them fine without an amp it won't hurt a thing you will get the normal range out of them as your factories did minus the noise. You just won't get the high range out of them untill you add an amp.

Funk,

I see you're in Knoxville. Go to UT?? I went to WKU back in the day. Currently, I'm getting my masters at Murray State.

Thanks for the response on my question. Call me a bone head but I'm still sitting here looking at two pairs of wire coming out of the door, one for the woofer and one for the tweeter. I know how things would have to be wired up coming out of an aftermarket HU, but with these two pairs of wires I'm confused without a wiring diagram to look at. Can you please explain to me specifically how you wired yours up with the factory HU (if you ever did this)? Thanks again.

I'm from east KY, murray state was one of the college that accepted me but I didn't considfer their program enough for me.

If you want excellent sound for not a lot of money and can be done yourself in less than an hour or so read this, it's a great upgrade to either enjoy for as long as you own your truck or until you decide to spend $$$ on amps, component speakers, etc ...

I replaced my 01 Tahoe's speakers with Cerwin Vega Vega 6002's from Crutchfield - they sent full door panel removal instructions plus the adapter that allows the speaker to snap right into the front openings just like the stock speakers (the fronts should be the same size on all late model full size GM truck/suv platforms). The Vega 6002's are awesome sounding speakers with crystal clear highs and good bass (do not need to use bass blockers on these babies!) with the oem head unit - despite what others say the oem head will produce excellent sound. These speakers are coaxial with a center tweeter that is angled toward the listener (so the stock tweeter stays but is disconnected).

I just installed the following the past week.

Focal 165K Component speakers for the front
Sony XM752 for the components
Audiomobile Mass 2012 Sub
Mtx 6500D amp for the sub

I tried to use the Factory deck but even with the gains on the amps set way high the deck still distorted way too early. The speakers/amps have much more in them.

I'm waiting for UPS to now deliver the following:
Pioneer DEH-P77DH head unit
MTX 6304 4 channel amp for the front compents and rear door speakers
Infinity Reference 652i speakers for the rear doors.

Disconnected factory sub and rear pillar speakers.

I absolutely hate the stock head unit. Usually aftermarket head units don't make that much of a sonic quality difference to quality car decks(its mostly the tweakabilty) but in the case of these GM head units they suck!

Here is a pic of the Focals installed.
