I picked up Four Wheeler magazine earlier this month and they've got an article about off-roading in Big Bend National Park. The article's somewhat light on details about the wheeling in particular, focusing more on some of the sights and attractions to take note of, but it metions that there are over 175 miles of off-road vehicle trails that're open to the public and that some offer the occasional challenge. Granted you've gotta stay on the trails and can't go wheeling just anywhere to keep from tearing the park up, but it sounds like the combination of light off-roading, awesome views, historic sights, solitude, and plenty of things to explore (on foot and by truck) would make for a great trip.
I'm trying to talk my girlfriend into going this spring for a week; the rough idea is to drive down, stay in a hotel outside the park that first night, and then explore the park for 3 or 4 days, camping out at night, and then stay one more night in a hotel outside the park before driving back home. It's about a 10 hour drive from the Dallas area, but with just gas, park admission, food, and a couple nights in a cheap hotel I figure it'd be a cool poor-man's vacation.
So I was hoping to get some opinions from anyone who's been, or knows someone who's been, on whether it's a worthwhile trip, especially in terms of the off-roading.
