no love for the 5.0's?I would be willing to bet it will support the 5.0. You are talking about all the same parameters as the other engines and there is very little, if any difference in the programming between the 5.0 and the 5.7.

This program allows full programming modifications of the stock computer. It allows you to change fueling, spark, shift points etc. Ive been programming TBI trucks for a while now but these have a removable eprom in them which you "burn" the file to. With OBD2 there is a flash programmable chip which is not removed but up till now there were no programs that could edit the vortec truck pcms and only a few shops in the country could do the reprogram.

OBD2_02 1999 - 2000 LS1 Trucks (4.8L, 5.3L, 6.0L)
OBD2_01 1999 - 2001 Camaro/Firebird/Corvette LS1
OBD2_03 2001 - 2002 LS1 Trucks (4.8L, 5.3L, 6.0L)
The following are scheduled for release early this year:
OBD2_04 2003 - 2004 LS1 Trucks (4.8L, 5.3L, 6.0L)
OBD2_08 1996 - 1997 Camaro/Firebird/Corvette LT1

Does $379 buy the whole kit-n-kaboodle ??? (less laptop of course)
I'll definitely buy one ASAP... My Hypertech just ain't cuttin it...
My 2000 454 just don't have the snot I think it should... The computerized "Torque management" crap just kills these motors...
I like the fact that I can "Tweak" or disable any parameter I want...
I'd really like to see a flat spark curve that stays consistent through the RPM's and gears, instead of the way GM retards it to control torque. Unlimited top speed, EGR disable, etc... The possibilities are endless...

I have used TunerCat's stuff for a couple of years. One thing is for sure, he produces a top of the line editor or none at all, and he stands behind his product 110% and gives far better support than just about anyone else. If you have a problem or need the definition updated, no problem. Glad to see that there is an affordable DIY tuner for the newer trucks.

I can see westers, nelson's and PCM for less quickly lowering their prices once the word gets around about this bad boy!
TXvortec350
01-07-2005, 07:48 PM
I doubt the prices will go down, look at LS1edit for the 99-2004 trucks, have the Westers and Nelson prices gone down?No they have not and they should not.Just cause there is software out there for individuals to tune them selfs wont make the custom tuners prices go down, you can get this tunercat software but if you do not know exactly what you are doin then you absolutly will not get the perfromance that Lyndon at Westers will get out of it.Lyndon has his own magic tricks for tuning,I promise you that.
Mr2500HD
01-07-2005, 07:54 PM
BUt if the person gets the right tune and lets it leak out, tells one person and then 10,000 boards know about it, then maybe they'll go down.
I think the program is a great idea, but I'm going to hold off and see if there's any bugs and also see the results. I personally will probally end up with a Nelson's...

Here are some answers to some questions you guys had:
1. No, the current OBDII Tuner program does not include any data logging capabilities....but see Note below from Monodax
2. Yes, unless the PCM has been 'locked' you can reprogram previously programmed PCM's. Our software does not lock the PCM....Ed Wright did not lock my pcm either.
3. No, the Tuner program is not VIN locked to a particular vehicle.
4. Yes, the Vortec Definition Files also support the 5.0L trucks!
5. Support is available via e-mail to all registered users. Registered users are also always eligible for free updates tot eh software and Vehicle Definition Files.
NOTE:
From a LS1Tech Post from Monodax: I would like to update some of the information in this thread to make it a bit more accurate. The claim about their not being a data logger or scanner software available for the TunerCat hardware is incorrect.
TunerCat and I have not determined how we are going to distribute it once it is completed but the software will be available soon. Just to keep the info correct the scanner / data logger will be developed by my company and TunerCat has already developed the tuning software and hardware which is ready for sale now.
The TunerCat hardware also has 3 A/D inputs which will you can log and view if you have the inputs connected. (0-5v) inputs.
I am building the forums to support the scanner/data logging software once it is complete. I just wanted to correct some of the information in the top of the thread about their not being a scanner/data logger or wideband support...Monodax
We will mostlikely get the ordering started by the middle or end of this week.

So how easy is this program to use?
TC sent me a copy of the quickstart manual:
http://james.jaguar.net/kctrading/OBD2QuickStart.pdf
Per TC it does not look that hard to use at all...."The actual programming and editing process is quite easy and shouldn't be a problem for even those with minimal computer experience. The 'hard' part, however, is knowing what changes you need to make to support engine modifications and such. For this you do need a good basic understanding of how these EFI systems work. We try to make the calibration parameter names as meaningful as possible but they can still be a little confusing at first. We'll do our best to answer your questions regarding the various parameters but we do not try to teach users how to tune a vehicle. Nor do we provide custom calibrations."
Monodax is working on a data logging program..... if you have any questions on the data logger click on the url below and log on, I already have!
"Yes, Monodax is working on a data logging program that is compatible with our hardware. He is making very good progress on it but I'm not sure exactly when it will be ready and no pricing has been established yet. He has also started a new tunercat forum at www.monodax.com that you can go to to find out more information on the data logging software and discuss other programming topics."
We have about 10 people so far ready to order on the Group Purchase but I am going to wait a few more days before we order.

Can you save tuning files with the program? In other words, can you have a 89 octane tune and a 93 octane tune and swap them around with a quick upload?

Looks like a good deal, but I'm with some others on the data logger though and I wouldn't count on this one being available anytime soon. It would be no use to me without being able to first see what I need to adjust. If I already had something such as autotap this might be a good way to go, but for now the HP tuners looks like a better deal to me. Good to see some competition though. It would be good to see the prices on all of the tuner sofware come down some.

Notice for those of you who have purchased a Tunner and do not have a 9 pin Serial Port....
From Monodax forum site: http://www.monodax.com/forums/
Well, I received the tuner yesterday, and i have a few questions. First, when i was getting my stock calibration files, it took 3 trys to get the file. It kept giving me an unexpected reaction from ECM(or something to that effect). I was wondering if maybe this could be attributed to the way i have the cable pluged into my computer? I am using a USB-DB9 converter because my computer doesn't have a DB9 Port. Is this going to cause me any problems with programing the ECM?...
Answer:
I would highly recommend using a PCMCIA to Serial Adapter. The brand I recommend personally from testing quite a few different adapters is SocketCom. But to be honest, almost any PCMCIA to Serial Adapter is going to be much more reliable. It is the way that the USB adapters are designed, the driver is key to their design that if they don't implement the RS-232 specification perfectly it is very likely that you may have problems reading or writing.
I'd be picking up this adapter while you are waiting on your programmer if your computer does not have this port!

Nice thing about this program is that you can save your orginal pcm program and change one thing at a time and save each time you do it...if you mess up one program you just go back to the last one that worked for you...or go back to the very start if you wanted....a lot of the programing is just point and click.
If you can work a computer you can work this program!

KenJust because you can operate a computer doesn't mean you can tune an engine. Take it from an experienced tuner, if you can't tune an engine with a carb and mechanical distrubutor, don't dive into computer tuning and start modifying tables. You can do serious engine damage if you don't know what you are doing. I have seen it happen first hand. Example; your seat of the pants tells you are lean at wide open throttle so you add fuel. It feels better so you add more, then more. Next thing you know, you make a wide open throttle run and you blow clouds of white smoke and your engine sounds funny. What happened? Here's what happened. You added so much fuel that you washed the oil off of the cylinder walls, ruined the ring seal and galled the pistons. Or worse yet you add too much timing. Too much timing slowly kills an engine. It may take 5,000 miles to melt a hole in your piston. I'm not trying to discourage anyone from computer tuning. In fact, I think every gearhead with EFI should learn to do it themselves, but learn all the aspects of engine tuning not just how to modify tables in a program. Learn to read spark plugs. Learn to use a datalogging program and know what the data is telling you. Buy some dyno time and tune on a dyno with a gas analyzer. Learn what the components in an EFI system actually do and their shortcomings. Search the web and read as much as you can, it will only make you a better tuner. The same principles that applied to engine tunung 50 years ago are still valid today only you are using an electronic box to control things. Now that I have preached to the congregation, go out and tune in the name of horsepower.

Good point....you got to be able to know what you are doing by using a scanner/data logger to use the full program...there is a lot of good info on the internet on the subject too...but you're never going to learn until you jump in and get your feet wet! Just go slow and ask alot of questions.

Update...there will be down loadable updates soon on there site so keep an eye open for them...will try to post them here when they come up too.
Per TC...
For you newbies....Unfortunately, there is no complete single source for information on Tuning EFI systems. CUSTOMEFIS (http://www.customefis.com) does have a pretty good tuning manual for EFI systems. I already have a ed wright tune on there that i have been tweaking as far as fuel curves and transmission settings... I understand the fueling stuff, its more the timing that im having a problem with. I did read what you said, i guess my question wasn't writtin well. What i meant to ask is pretty much what is the main reason for the updates, is it because of the tables or other reasons.. make the change in the Tuner software, save the file to a new name.
open up the winflash program, select program, select your new file..
takes a few seconds to flash the change because it only replaces what has been changed, not the whole cfg.

Ok so another question about the cost. Is it $334 for everything I need to tune, then an additional $70 for the def file that I will need? Or is it $334 including one definition, in which case I will only be working on one engine so I would not need any additional files?

$334 out the door with one DF (Deffinition File) of your choice!
If you have any buddies who need programing you could always charge them the DF price (your fee) to build up your libary collections...as you would also need them to view trucks other than what your DF covers.

TM is taken out on Tables/Spark Tables last four from the bottom dealing with Torque...also under Constants/Transmission/Transmission, you would need to change the temp to 150C. you could view my posted cal file but you would need to get the DF file for my year...when you get it I can post some screen shots with the numbers you will need to imput to take TM out.
Tire and gear size changes are very easy with a couple of changes in the Constants/System Parameters, Final drive ratio and speed pulse per mile.

Something else I found out today from TC....
The WinFlash OBD2 program (that comes with all the TunerCat Programer) can read "all" years of our trucks as long as its not a 4 cyl or a inline six cylinder...if it can recognize it, it can copy the pcm cal file! :)
Important: Never try and load someone elses cal file into your pcm...also use your own cal file that has been modified!
Meaning you guys can now make some copies of other trucks and email them to me even if yours does not cover that year model...so we can now post them...make sure you also note if it is a stock program or a modified one and if modified what was done on the reprogram, etc.

You can add one more to the list. I just sent out my payment in the mail for my TunerCat purchase.
Now for a few questions.
1. I am wanting to remove between 90-100% of my torque management. I was wondering if you would be willing to post a few screen shots of your tables so that I can use them for reference. Also how much of your TM is removed?
2. What method do you use to change the "speed pulse per mile" number. My spedo is 13% off would I simply multiply by 87% to get the nuw number(ppm*.87=new ppm)?
3. Last question that I can think of. How do you take screen shots of your comp screen? I would like to begin posting shots as I learn to program.
Thank you,

Here's a good reason to get the TunerCat program before you have to pay full price! Group purchase ends Feb 24th 2005!
Here are some screen shots on what it takes to remove torque management and also the speed and Rev limiters!
Best to compare your stock file with this one as you don't always need to change every value as you will notice that many of them are the same.
Added a new folder below...enjoy!
Also suggestions are always welcome!!!

Can do,
I was planning to mimik the difference between the two 99 tahoe files that you had , the stock and the hypertech tuner one, and then transfer those differences that I find to my pickup file. While this is a far simplified version of what I will do. What I am hoping to achieve is to remove torque management, fix my spedo, and create a mimic of a hypertech tune. If this seems to not be a good idea just let me know.

Pulses per Mile = (806725.257 X Rear End Ratio) / Tire Diameter = PPM
In my case.... I have a 4.10 gear ratio and 32.75" tires...
806725.257 X 4.10 / 32.75 = 100994.61

It was nice, feels a lot better, now that I dont' have to worry about the fuel shutting of at 98mph. Though I did get my truck up to 120mph(gps), I do not think that it will spend much time up there, bricks don't like to go through the air that quickly. And my radio antenna is already bent. :-)

I noticed on the monodax site it shows the 3 ADC inputs, but mine does not have those, does anyone else have these?

i emailed them about the inputs when i first recived it... this is what i got back for all interested
"No, the current version of the OBDII Converter does not have the auxiliary inputs but we are working on a update to existing converters that will allow us to add this feature for those that need it.
Best regards, "
So it looks like we will be able to get it when we need it once they get it all working

Got my socket com adapter the other day and have been programming like crazy. I love this thing! First thing I did was eliminate the speed limiter, first time in 7 years my truck has gone over 98 mph. Then I changed the shift point for 3 to 4 upshift, cause it wouldnt shift at wot. Now Im trying some torque management removal. I have a couple of questions though, in GMC K1500 SC's link the pic of the torqe management tables, those are for a 350, should the same numbers work for a 4.3? And what table do I modify to firm up the shifts, just moving the tm temp to 150 degrees helped but id like it a little better. Thanks for any help, sueto2.

Takes a little digging in that second thread but for Torque Management just edit the:
Tables, Spark Tables, Torque Management Spark Retard Limit Vs. RPM Table.
Stock mine retarded timing 15 degrees between shifts. I set it to -5 for the street and 0 for the track.

You guys know what I would have to edit to change my shift points...I want to raise them from 5200 to 5800 rpms...I found where I need to raise the rpms on each shift but don't I also need to raise the mph for each as well in another table?

to raise your shift point you only need to change the rpm. It won't shift until both the mph and rpm are met so if the mph is low and the rpm table is set higher than the mph one than it won't **** until it reaches the rpm one..

Everyone get the latest OBDII Tuner and WinFlash Programs???
WinFlash OBDII Version 1.64 Update
http://www.tunercat.com/obd2/updates/wf_updt.html
OBDII Tuner Version 1.17 Update
http://www.tunercat.com/obd2/updates/tnr_updt.html
Once you get both updated, connect your programer to your truck and click on tools and check the latest firmware...if it is 24 you need an update if it is 20 then you are ok...you will need to email TC directly to get the firmware file update.

Just out of curiosity, do you know what these updates are supposed to accomplish?? Also what is the difference between firmware 24 and 20??
Thankx for all the good work. It is nice that you post the updates in this thread as I get an email notification from FSC that there are new updates avaiable.

Click on each link and it will tell what it fixes.
After updating your OBDII Tuner and WinFlash OBDII programs, connect your OBDII Interface to the PC and the vehicle and run the WinFlash OBDII program. Click on the 'Tools' menu and select 'Check Firmware Version' from the drop-down list. This will display the version of the firmware in your OBDII interface box. If you have version 24 you will need an update to the firmware. We have found a bug in this firmware that can sometimes cause communications problems with certain calibrations. If you have version 20 you do not need an update. If you need a firmware update let John at TC know and he can mail you out a new chip for you to install into the OBDII interface box...since the chip is not solder in it's a fairly easy swapout.

Just want to remind Everyone to send their ECM files to Ken so they will be posted. For everyone who has sent files A big ThankYou, You guys dont know how much that has helped me in tunning my truck. After 2 full custom tunes & a handheld there was still plenty of little fixes that just made the truck respond unbeleivable. I was able to correct my cold start idle stumble, some transmission shift issues & am now working on tweaking timing & fuel. This is an awsome tool, again Thanks to all who took the time to send files.

Per John at Tuner Cat:
I had John add the Throttle follower tables (four of them) to the DF file for my truck....they work! I did not like the fact that my idle always seemed high on decell and when just coming to a stop....they are also adding misfire tables which will get rid of raddom misfires that set SES lamps and cut out TC lockup....mine would do this from time to time with the old 350 engine on the freeway.
"Yes, the throttle follower tables are being added to the other Definition Files as we get to them. We've also added the Misfire tables to all the Definition Files. If anyone else needs these updates right away, have them contact us and we'll get an update to them. If there are any other parameters you or anyone else on the forum need, please let me know....John"
If you need these send an email to John at tc@tunercat.com

so is this thing worth the money?would you say it's better than proflash or superchips?looks complicated,is it something i could learn myself?does it come with a manual or something along those lines?CAN I DESTROY MY TRUCK WITH IT TOO EASILY?(PLZ KEEP IN MIND I AM AN IDIOT)
thx for any info guy's :assclown:
I love it! It does a lot more than all the hand held programmers out there...just like getting your own custom pcm tune...they use a simular program...the basics are pretty easy...hardest part is dialing in the fuel as you really need a wideband O2 and a good OBDII scanner to really know where you are at on partial throttle and WOT...nice thing is you first make a copy of the stock program (*.cal file) and save it then rename each file change so you can always go back to where you were on each change.
No manual to speak of right now but they are working on a better help section for the software.
If you want to learn it's a lot of fun...if not go with a handheld or send me your pcm and $300 and I'll do it for ya :head:

what would be the major difference in this and a westers PCM? i mean from what i heard, cant westers do the same thing for you regarding the torque management, and that stuff. Wouldnt that be the better way to go for us that are not as EFI knowlegeable? :naughty:

We have quite a few member cal files on the web...a lot of it is just copying what has already been done from these files....I like the fact that I can reprogram a few friends trucks and now I got mine for free...but if you got more cash than time to learn... I guess paying someone else is fine too!

Anyone done it on a lightly modified truck without forced induction? Any noticeable power differences or differences in fuel mileage? I'm going to upsize tires so I need to look into something to correct that out, and programmability is always sweet. I've got a wideband already (Innovate LM-1, yummy!) for my car so thats no problem.
Anyone had hard times tuning it? How user friendly is it?
PS - I checked out their "office" - He works out of his house, he's got a nice Benz and Jag (I figured I'd scope it out since he's in Belle Haven, 1 town over from my farm. Since its a town of a couple hundred people I figured I'd check it out, out of curiousity. Small world, huh?)
Thanks guys!

I have a completely stock 98 chevy with 35s on it. The reason that I got the programer was to correct for the tire size and to remove Tq Management. The spedo now reads perfect and removeing the tq mngmt made what I felt was a noticeable difference. I also shortened the shift times and a few other things. I know that I really don't have the knowledge or the tools to be doing much more than this so that is where I stop, and for this I have absolutely no complaints.
As
