View Full Version : Interior Painting Problems??

I've been painting my interior for about the past month and been having great luck. That is until I got to the Main dash part, I scrubbed it really well with a scuff pad and sanded as well, and after applying the adhesive and a coat or two of paint,

I noticed where there were spots that wouldn't smooth out.
The spots are where the factory coat is coming off. I guess it's the only piece like that because my interior is tan, and underneath the tan it is black.

There were a few minor spots where the paint was peeling.

I sanded these areas as best I could and figured the paint would blend over them, but it didn't, it sticks out like a sore thumb.

I have sanded and reapplyed ump-teen times and still no luck, it seems as if it's getting worse and worse.

I just don't want to have to strip that tan, and re-do the entire dash, because way more of the majority is flawless, but these few spots are driving me crazy.

By the way, I'm working with a 01 Silverado. If anybody has any suuggestions, or advice or anything, please let me know, thanks!!

I used SEM paint on mine, without even sanding...course I didn't want to have my dash smooth either. Just used some orange cleaner, then give it ample time to dry and painted. Did 2 coats just to insure even texture.

I'm using simple Dupli Color, it has worked fine on all the other pieces, I know it's the crappy stuff though. I guess, now that I think about it, that top coating on the dash is vinyl isn't it? What do you suggest?

Its probably two separate materials and you sanded through one and got to the other which doesnt take paint as well or something. I'd suggest getting a tube of glazing putty and sanding everything 1-2" around the spot, laying down the putty, and then painting over that after doing some LIGHT sanding of the putty...

well, im not familiar with nbs interiors, but on my 88, i had to fiberglass over the vinyl and smooth it out to get a hard surface for the paint to bond to. give the SEM interior paint a try. I have heard nothing but good things from it.
if i were you, i would sand the hell out of that area that is peeling. get it to where you have the same texture all over. it will be alot of work but its better to do it right than pay for it in the end. what LyaecZ71 would work. but it kind of depends on the problem. if you DID sand through two materials, you would need to use the putty. seems like you sanded through the tan vinyl ans onto black plastic.?

If you're trying to paint over the black plastic, that's probably the issue.
Are you using coarse or light sandpaper grit?

I've heard bad things about the Duplicolor. Some people recommend it, but I've heard too many horror stories.(peeling, flaking, etc...) IMO, save yourself alot of work and find some SEM. I did some hunting and found a fabric store in South San Diego that sells SEM paint. Do a search on the forums and you'll learn more about it.
I painted MY DASH (http://www.imagestation.com/album/?id=4254190093) over 3 mths ago and haven't had ANY problems.

My only problem is that I didn't do the entire interior, so I'm going to be pulling the rear seat out to mask & paint the rest.... :aniteef:

Good luck! :cheer:

Bear in mind that I have an OBS truck. What I found is that the Krylon Fusion works very well on HARD plastic. However I found the SEM paint worked better on the vinyl door panels and the cloth material. So far 6 months and everything is holding up very nicely.
