when i got my truck, the odometer and tripometer had quit. so i picked up a gauge cluster at a swap meet and put that in the truck. everything worked and life was grand...

but...

now the "new" gauge cluster has quit working too. is this a common problem? is it fixable? i'd hate to crack the cluster open and have itty bitty springs fly wverywhere on me and never be able to get the thing back together again... anyone have any ideas?

are the 88's electrically controlled like my 98?? if not and it the cable style maybe the cable keeps popping out or something from the back of the cluster?

nope, no cables. everything is electronic.

i did a search, but all i came up with were problems with the electronics on the truck (which doesnt appear to be the case because the new cluster was working) or people who just swapped out clusters. no one seems to have repaired one before.

ok well... guess i'll just get the screwdriver out and see what happens...

On my black 90 the plastic clip that holds the odometer in to the gearing busted. Didnt really care though, its a old truck with lots of miles on it.

My trip odo died a few years ago. But other than that I have had no problems. I have restored older chev dash/clusters but the newer (relatively speaking) electronic, plastic everything clusters make me leary of digging into them to try to fix anything. I wish there was an easy fix for my trip odo as I miss that function.

My 88's odo/trip stopped working at 109999.9 miles, so I figured it was just hung up from trying to turn all of those numbers. I took the clear plastic cover off and turned the 1/10ths (very last number, usually in a white block) one more, all numbers moved to 110000. Fixed it, still works at 114xxx now. Dont try to do anything stupid, like roll it back, if you do, the numbers are supposed to spread apart and show gray or white spaces in between them. Good luck.

Mine did the same thing. I noticed neither the trip or the regular odometer worked. I took it all apart and in pieces but couldn't find anything.

I bought another one used off Ebay. The trip odometer stopped working but the regular one is still going. It is such a PITA. I just think they are crappy clusters. I tried to think about putting in a 92 cluster but I think some of the wires/pins might have changed.

Let me know if you ever find a full proof fix :)

my trip odometer stopped workin on mine a long time ago.....its stuck at 777.....but i dont think those numbers are to lucky for me, been in 5 wrecks....but mines a 92 and everytime i go to put it back to zero via the little push button, it just jumps and goes right back to 777

I wrote a tech article on odometers....in the tech section

link?
i clicked tech section and saw some stuff about swapping clusters and white overlays and whatnot... nothing about the internals of the cluster or anything.

Hey boys, the gearing seems to go on these trucks. No idea why but ive seem many clusters where the gearing on the left side of the odometer jsut fell off ( like mine ). Easy fix really. P.S dont be affraid of springs popping out at you, i know on the older style at least its all screwed down inside.

looks to me like the little motor that drives the odo is burned up. everything seemed ok when i looked in there.
