The silver and blue look great together! It's almost ashame it's going to be mostly covered up when done.

BTW, CKTA...I can almost believe your name is Mike Hunt. I actually walked into a very important business meeting a few years ago...totally unaware of what was about to happen. One of my business partners introduced the CEO of this company we were trying to strike up a partnership with, and he says, "I'd like you to meet Mike Hunt." To this day I do not understand how I held a straight face at that moment and through the rest of the meeting....given that I'ms till laughing about it NOW.

ive always been set on a solid blue but ive also been dabbling with a few other ideas. Possibly some semi-ghost flames or maybe some of those flame over flame deals where there is a blue body with silver flames then another set of blue flames over them (hope thats understandable).
Thats pretty far off in the distance though....

Looks great Jimmy. I really like the blue and silver, is that the same scheme that is going on the interior?

havent even thought about it in a while....but lemme know what you come up with. PS if you want to make some money ..perfect those brackets and make a bunch of them. You could easily make $50-$100 per pair.

Jimmy P

Got the new 95 impala ss rear end setup finally. Seemed like I had to weld on a hundred brackets to it(shock mounts, upper bar mounts, lower bar mounts, bumpstop mounts and bag mounts) but it looks like its all going to work out perfectly.

I have to do some work on the air tanks tomorow then its all getting sandblasted and painted so if all goes well this weekend I will have it together.

Up front I got the swaybar and poly bushings installed. The new tie rods ends and wheel bearing showed up on wednesday. Waiting on the powerslot rotors to show up before I can finish the front end off. First week of march is spring break so I should be able to get alot done then also...dropping the cab on for the final time and firing up the ls1 for the first time is finally within site!!!!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v610/ssjimmyss/DCP1_0029.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v610/ssjimmyss/DCP1_0028.jpg

the bad news:
As I was spraying the last ounce of clear on the rear end I was sitting on the floor with my legs under it spraying up when the air hose caught the shock mount and spun the rear end on top of me. It landed on my leg and i held the other end in my hand and then it knocked over the little table with the body mounts over. So the rear end has two maybe three spots that need to be resprayed and of course I am out of paint now too:cussing:
The sealer coat on the air tanks looked so bad i didnt even bother painting them. The powdercoat on the tanks was kinda crappy in some spots so i lightly sandlbasted them down to teh metal and now you can really see those spots. So I either have to sandblast the entire things clean(which could possibly weaken them) or lay a couple coats of filler primer over them then paint them.
Oh well the front end can go together today hopefully if nothing else goes wrong. :run:

Somehow got alot done today even though i hadnt even planned on working on the truck at all. Turns out the company sent me the wrong size wheel bearings so I had to run up to the auto store to get the right ones in the middle of my rotor install.
Got the new wheel bearings/seals installed, new inner and outer tie rods put in, front powerslots and painted calipers bolted in place.
Rear axle was bolted up for the last time along with the driveshaft and shocks.
:rocking:
Next up is the plumbing for the brakes/fuel system and air supply!!!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v610/ssjimmyss/DCP1_0029.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v610/ssjimmyss/DCP1_0028.jpg

the bad news:
:run:
You should be fine blasting the tanks entirely...just keep plastic caps securely on the threaded ports and keep the sand out of the tanks..duh...But it will not hurt the tanks strength. Our grit blaster at work is around 12000 psi and we blast thing metal daily without problems...including small and large pressure vessels.

paint booth is working out awesome...bought some 10 ft wide visqueen plastic from the hardware store, folded the edges together and stapled them. I strung a rope between a ladder and the two walls and hung the plastic over that. Got a $15 box fan and it blows from one end and I crack the garage door on the other end. Ill try to snap some pics of it later for you. I would obviously be broke if I had to haul all these parts to a shop for paint.

Pics would be awsome, but no rush. I don't need it for about a month.
That doesn't kick up any small dust that might be in there? I was thinking put one at the back blowing the air towards another fan that's blowing it outside. However don't you need a fan that won't blow up from the paint hitting the motor?

Edit: I'd set up the fan in the back not pulling in any out side air. Just the air in the booth.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that you would only want the one fan to pull the overspray out. An additional fan pushing in would probably suck in outside dust and debris. But I'd like to see what Jimmy's thought on this is too. :dunno:

Wouldnt that make it like doin it in the open air and the air possibly blow the paint when it comes out of the gun? I dont know much about painting right now but i know it needs to be fairly calm to do paint.

Dont just get some fan to use. You need a special fan that does not produce sparks inside. All fans do. There are special fans for ventalation that do not make sparks. I dont know much about them but if you have a confined space loaded with dangerous, flamable fumes. Any electrical arch can cause some real problems.

Also. If you are planning any large sum of money to do a real paint job. Your best bet is to rent a spray booth. Or just have a someone do it.

Home painting is more suitable for what has been shown above with that transmission and smaller parts. Its a lot easier to make a dust free environment for smaller parts then to try turning your entire garage into a paint booth. The trick is to eliminate dust through the paint and drying process so it doesnt get on the paint. Using water on the floor is one idea I hear helps. I just couldnt see spending tons of time to paint a car then having dust settle on it and ruin my work.

I dont have much expierence in doing all of this but I do have my share of research with working on 66 Chevelle in my sig. It is possible to get a decent paintjob in a garage but not quite if your going for show quality.

Looks good Jimmy. Looking forward to more progress.

Chris.100% correct...also if using a heater during winter painting it must be out of the booth or the fumes can ignite.....the best thing is to run a duct into the booth from the heater.

You're doing a great Jimmy:rocking:

i just have one box fan blowing in from the garage flat across the floor. It seems to suck the overspray down and out under my garage door on the other end. I figured I would have it blowing fresh air in instead of sucking the fumes out so the fan wouldnt be pushing all the fumes through it. This is the same booth I use for sandblasting too so it is by no means dust free but it gets the job done for the smaller parts. When it comes time to start spraying the exterior body panels I will most likely be renting a booth.
The furnace filters work awesome too....they are only a couple bucks each and I just replace them when they get dirty. put them in front of the fan and they stop any large particles of dust coming through.
Come to think of it there is a great site that had some ideas for painting stuff in a home garage where I got alot of ideas from but I cant remember the html right now.

Even with just a quick sweeping and allowing the dust to settle down before I spray I havent had any problems at all with dust or dirt in my paint. There are many other things you can do like wetting down the floor and stuff. I keep the psi low for the gun and my parts are usually hangning in the middle of the booth so im not stirring up dust.

Hey Jimmy. Your truck is an inspiration to me. Especially the thread about the stock floor cab drop.

On the topic of a paint booth fan, I can't remember where I saw it but some guy built small wooden frames out of 2x4's and installed fart fans on them. He stacked together like 4 of these things he built and put felt A/C filters on them to make his garage into a paint booth. They move alot of air and do not produce sparks. Plus they are cheap as hell.

P.S.- Where the hell do you find the time to do all this ? Don't you have to work for a living ? Color me green.

On the paint note i have heard that people use standard auto paint for their engine blocks so I felt ok confident painting the intake with it. Although there were a few spots in the cracks that must have had some oil in the plastic because the paint had second thoughts about sticking. Thank god it was only in the places that are covered up anyways.

Yeah you gotta clean clean and re-clean that plastic. Painting plastics cab be a pita because sometimes it works fine and you do the same stuff to something else and it looks like poo because there is more oil or something in it that you cant see :cussing:

I did and that was almost 9 years ago. it hold up great as long as it prep'd right. The base/clear on mine is even mint by the exhaust on the heads and that's w/ the hotter S/C exhaust too.

so true...i cleaned it a bunch of times and it seemed to be good but those corners were hard to get to. Its funny the primer stuck fine but the paint still didnt like it.

tonights progress:
Got the tanks/valves mounted and put the front bags/cups in place. Turns out im still 1/2" from laying so i have a tiny amount of cup trimming to do. Also snapped a pic of the two-toned water pump.

anything new?

Jimmy P
04-16-2005, 09:13 PM
yea ive been waiting for stuff to come in at gm for a couple weeks now but it finally showed up friday.

Installed the new ls6 oil pump, new windage tray, new engine seals inside the engine. Got the new crank pulley bolted in place which turned out to be quite a process. also power steering, new PS pulley, water pump/new gaskets, starter, intake fuel rails/covers.....
Pretty much got the motor back together for good this time hopefully. Still have to get a new alternator too and a few other things though.
Decided to just leave the block bare aluminum and not polish or paint it. I went back and forth so many times I decided to just wait until the winter's engine build before I detail the block to make sure it flows with the rest of the engine bay. I think it looks pretty good as it sits though...you cant really see much of the block even.

Tomorow I plan to get the engine/trans dropped into the frame so I can start planning the exhaust and fuel lines. Might drop the cab on to check for final clearances too.

Still have to deal with the stupid valve cover bolt that snapped in the head:cussing: but hopefully that doesnt turn into anything too serious. thats all for now:D

are the pullies painted? if so, that wont last! powder coat now, before its too late! looks dang good tho brotha. better get some of that expensive custom truck insurance before u start driving it. how long do u predict it will take for body/paint and interior to be complete? another 2 years? lol, keep up the awesome work...

yea they are painted...i dont really expect the areas that contact the belt to last obviously but im optimistic about the rest of it. I may be swapping in a custom setup down the road anyways so I dont want to get too carried away with them.

Powdercoat will last a little longer, but not much. After 8 years my chrome plated pullies are showing belt wear. :read: You can't stop it. :(

there wasnt really a need to repaint since I still have the stock clam shell type engine mounts. Just the little rubber mounts were inside the clamshell upside down and to take them off you have to access the nuts which are inside the frame. Its one of those things where your arm gets bent into positions that it isnt meant to be. Most likely when I redo the engine next year I will be making my own custom mounts though.
