What would say has a better sound?
6.5 component speakers in kick panels or 6x9's mounted in the door in our trucks?

Or is there a better audio config?

Any true audiophile will tell you that kickpanels are going to sound better than 6x9's, especially if you use components in your kicks. Having the tweeter and midrange seperate not only produces a cleaner sound, but it allows you to push more power to your speakers than a conventional Coax where the tweeter is mounted to the speaker. A 6x9 is not really the best design for producing quality sound. They will get louder than 6" components, simply because there is more cone surface area to make sound, but the 6" compenents will sound tons better just because the tweeter and mid are seperate.

Round speakers produce better sound. I added some two-way 6.5s to my 89 with the aftermarket q-logic (I think) kick panel molds. I did not add components, just two way 6.5s. I did amplify them, which I think is necessary, especially if you go components. They sound great and really added great imaging to the little truck cab.

One thing, they are a little bit of a pain, considering it is the "kick panel" and I bumb it from time to time.

Kick panel sound better. It's a pain to install. When you cut them out, you have to deal with the fender and firewall divider. Also when you are done, better seal the very bottom where the fender ends and you see asphalt, it'll ruin a speaker. I found out the hard way. Silicone first, let it cure, then put the foam in a can in there, enough for it to fill a fourth of the hole.
