finally got going on it. one rail is almost completely welded in, front shoe horns are marked and ready to be cut, body mounts are cut off and frame is marked as to where to weld the new ones. new body mounts are marked off and ready to be cut, i gotta get some 1/8" and 3/16" plate so i can cut the rest of the rail down, and weld the filler piece in for the shoehorns

Give me the heads up on the different "forms" of bodydrops...and explain each...if you have the time...

Sweet Tea Man

stockfloor- basically the name says it all. its lowering the frame and body mounts and you dont lose any head room or leg room. you only have to rais ethe tranny tunnel in the cab.

traditional- you cut the floor from the cab and raise it which in tern drops the body down. you lose head room and leg room.

in both the traditional and stock floor, you still need to raise the bed floor and drop the shoehorns to drop the front and rear
then there is channeling. i dont know much baout it but there is one guy on here who has done it. i dont remember his name. he's the guy who hates bags and loves hydros. he knows his stuff

sounds like the stockfloor is the way to go for a daily driver and seems like it would be an easier way to go...I know I wouldn't wanna lose leg or head room in mine now...

Hey look, it's the guy formerly known as nationsfinestra. BTW, I don't HATE bags. I'm doing them on my '04 as soon as the wheels get here.

Anywho, I channelled my truck. I cut out sections of the floor for the frame to slide up into. I then lowered the bodymounts on the cab and the frame to get 2.75" or so of drop, and then welded it all up. With the carpet in it's difficult to tell if it's bodydropped or not, and I love it.

the tallest part of the frame is right where your feet go. When all was said and done with the filler panel....it would stick up a good 2". I did it right after i saw nationsfinest and the nbs works out alot better from what I could see in his pics.

I can dig up some pics of mine if you want to see.

Yes, you can. We do that at work from time to time on our DeWalt. Other than making sure it's the right diameter and arbor size, the only other thing you have to check is the RPM range. I can't remember if it's a maximum or a minimum RPM limit, but it's right on the label of the metal disc. As long as the saw meets that, you're good to go.

Oh yeah -- if the saw is regularly used for wood, you should clean out the dust trap before you use the metal disk. Might be overkill, but better safe than sorry.

got the drivers side taillight filler welded in, got a filler piece of metal cut out and welded over the body line, and finished smoothing over the gas door and body line. needs a little more sanding work but its in primer and good to go for now. also welded the pocketstakes on the drivers side and got a coat of primer on it:D

got my measurements down for the tubs for the firewall. cant decide which i want to do. 2" above normal or 1". tires should barely hit when the cab is on the frame as it is so i'm leaning toward the 1"(the dotted line). i'll get everything double checked tomorrow and get everything welded in:head:

Looking good.
Are you jut going to relocate the e brake or go with a hand brake somewhere else?
How exactly will the grommets, wiring blocks, etc, fit with the smooth firewall?
Exactly what measurements did you decide on for the firewall tubs? Is there ANY way that you can retain the factory A/C and heat with a notch that size?
I am thinking about it but in Texas I HAVE to have AC... I could go with an after market system from vintage air since thay are right down the street if I had too, and it would probably be better using the Sanden 508 and braided lines, chrome drier, etc. I am just worried about the interrior AC assembly as it would be easier to retain that if I can.

Sweet Tea Man
07-23-2005, 10:11 AM
i have all my measurements written down in the shop. dont remember em off hand.

i will have no AC/heat. i will have no roof so i'm not worried about it.

nothing will be ran through the firewall unless it absoluetly has to be. everything will be ran under the truck and through the frame. no ebrake. mines an automatic and i never used it when i could drive it for 4 years it was running.

hood will be worked off of a solonoid.

dapolice1
07-23-2005, 10:23 AM
So no wipers, steering column, etc.?
I guess you can run the ebrake and wiring through the floorboard?
Just when you have a chance to get those measurements.

I think I am just going to go with an aftermarket AC unit. They are cleaner and I can mount them where I want to. I am doing a custom dash off of the factory 98 dash so I can make my own AC vents and ducting too.

Sweet Tea Man
07-23-2005, 10:27 AM
:wtf: do you mean no steering column and such? that remark was just rediculous in itself man. c'mon. no i'm not going to have wipers. if i have no roof then why have wipers

yes the steering column will be going through the firewall. again as i said before only the things that need to go through the firewall will go through. havent decided yet as to if i'm going with a hotrod style brake booster or if i will be running the stock one. i have enough room under the dash for the hotrod one i also have enough room above the tubs for it to go.

i said in the post above i wouldnt have an ebrake. all my wiring will be ran under the truck and along or inside the rails, then brought where needed

dapolice1
07-23-2005, 10:57 AM
:wtf: do you mean no steering column and such? that remark was just rediculous in itself man. c'mon. no i'm not going to have wipers. if i have no roof then why have wipers

Chill out man. It is a legitimate question. Your doing all this custom work it was a question of how far you are going with it. There are all kinds of hydrolic steering systems out there. As well as other various systems not requiring a steering column. Through a series of u joints shfts and such I have seen lots of complex setups. Maybe you were going to try and run it through the floor as well. Your reply was unwarrented and quite frankly "that remark was just rediculous in itself man"

As far as windshield wipers go. In the state of Texas you do not have to have a roof, doors, even a windshield, but your required to have wipers. Maybe your state is diffrent or it is going to be a non licensable vehicle I don't know that's why I asked.

:yes the steering column will be going through the firewall. again as i said before only the things that need to go through the firewall will go through.

Seems to me the brake booster and wiring needs to go through the firewall unless your relocating, that's why I asked exactly what you intended on doing with them. Seem almost as obvious as sterring column doesen't it?

gotta go get some more welding gas.

got the new bed mounts supported with gussets, got the gas tank crossmember almost out. gotta grind off the bottom rivet on both sides. then boxing the rest of the frame today.

tomorrow i'll finish the front shoe horns, and hopefully get the front where the new rails meet the original frame touched up and redone:cool: pics in a few. i'm off to the welding shop.

got the templates for boxing the rest of the frame done, and they'll be welded in tomorrow, as well as bracing the shoehorns and other misc. stuff. had a customer come by that needed work done so i didnt get to finish tonight

Sweet Tea Man
09-04-2005, 09:20 PM
motor work is a while away. unless i get a big side job comin in. i need a couple of those right now. for motor work, gauges, steering column, wiring harness, fuel system,

i dont want anything overly powerful on the motor. i thought abotu doing a small rebuild or doing something just to get it to around 300 ponies to the wheels. i'd be content with that

mw66nova
09-04-2005, 10:25 PM
300rwhp is pretty easy, even on the stock shortblock

get some decent heads, a set of dart iron eagles would be instore here, 180ccintake runner style. a comp cams 274xe cam would be right along what those heads would want. a holley stealth ram on top to keep things cool lookin' with the holley fuel management system. a decently built 700r4 to keep things streetable with about a 2000stall converter. 3.73's out back to keep things interesting.

ahhh, the imagination of a motorhead...

its thesame 4link i had onthe truck before i tore it apart. putting it on rightnow means my pinion angle is nowset how it waswhen i was driving it. i'm goingto weld some angle iron from thebridge to differential to hold the axlefrom rotating for temp. until i figure out how i'm going to do it
