The place I have seen a 2nd battery on NBS is at the firewall over the passenger side fender. Look at the wrangler nw site - they are expensive, but I think that the factory aux battery goes there too.

Yep, factory mount is there. You can buy the factory mounting tray for about $30, I bought it from mark last year.

so its the same battery tray as my stock one or is it different since it goes up by the passenger side firewall? if anyone has a part number that would be awesome.

No clue on the part number... ask the dealer for the aux battery tray from an '04-'06 2500HD Duramax

Screw 11509853
Clamp 356668

Thats what Mark sold me for mine. You remove a couple braces between the fender and firewall and this fits in its place.
Pm me an e-mail address and I'll send you the install pics, I haven't gotten around to putting them on my web page yet.

There is a tech section on here, I could send my pics if they can be hosted on this site (my web site is getting too big at the moment), we could do a write up with part numbers and instructions.

That's what the factory 2nd battery looks like in the Duramax engine bay.

There's nothing there in my 02 1500HD 2WD.

I've got a crew-cab, so under the hood is the only option.

I wanted to find out if with the stock aux battery holder from a DMAX will a bigger battery, like a Stinger SP1700, fit.

On the 2002 and below the second battery mounts to the radiator support opposite the other battery like the OBS trucks.

I doubt it. It's sandwiched in there between the firewall and the coolant reservoir. I don't think you're going to get anything bigger than a group 24 in there.

Instead of bigger, how about better? An optima should work.

NBS trucks started in 99. Opposite the driver's side battery is the stock airbox location.

After ordering all the GM parts (tray, clamp, etc.) to do this mod to my 01 Tahoe, I noticed the same problem.

Was your vehicle purchased in California? Mine was, and seems as though this is where the California emissions unit is, as confirmed by Wrangler NW Products. They informed me that lots of California trucks/SUVs have done this mod, but it requires relocating the emissions unit below the tray.

Does anyone have any experience/advice regarding this?

I ditched the whole plan, and ended up putting 2 BatCap 800's under my back seat ...

Left (passenger side) near the firewall is the aux. battery and right front (driver side) is dedicated to the starter motor =}

These are stock locations on a 2006 2500HD Reg Cab/Long Box LT1 with a 6.0 ltr/Auto

I put a 2nd battery under my hood in a 99 NBS chevy 1500. I put it between the coolant tank and the firewall. I made my own tray outta steel. And I didnt need a clamp as the corner brace for the fender/firewall is touching the battery.

I went with a ford battery because they were lower than the chevy's.

Some truck cant do this though because the have the air injection pump at that location, I'm not sure what enbgine sizes and/or years have it on the NBS.

I'll post some pics when I get home, at work right now.

if you download the service manual supplement from the gm military site there is a frame attached battery tray used there. The military trucks get three batteries, two under the hood and one on the frame.

I took some pictures, it looks like crap cause I just washed with baking soda. But the tray I made and bolted to the lower crossmember. I didn't need battery bolts to hold it in place as the fender crossmember is holding it in. It was so close actually I had to grind a bit away from the back of it just to get it back on.

I am also running a 2nd alternator to, 85 amps. And the bracket is home made, wired in myself, it works great. I did it cause of the 3 amps I'm running for the system, and monitoring them on my alpine deck I've seen one amp pull 45amps.

Although if i were to do it again I would prolly go with the setup that frostbite has a picture of, that looks sweet.
