After trying to get a set of nerf bars from a local warehouse I gave up (both came in damaged!) You don't always have to use the ones that are called for on your truck...case in point:
Donor truck was a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 4 door ext. cab 2WD Truck :) These are about two inches shorter I was able to modify the short brackets and had my friend in the bodyshop weld them to the frame in the front behind the body mounts...the bars fit good on the rear in pre-drilled holes from the factory that were already in the frame....no bracket needed, also this kept the right angle so they are even with the body....I like the fact that they are not sticking way out as I've seen some other bars and that they are mounted to the frame so there will be no squeeks :) I also like the fact that there is an extra pad on the drivers rear making roof cleaning easier :)
Bars added another 50 lbs to my truck :( But they look great and now my little wife (5'2") can get in without much problem ;)
Anyone ever been hit in the bar area? I've heard from others that they provide quite a bit of side protection too! These are the steel chrome bars and not the thin stainless steel ones....they would seem to add protection in the parking lots too!
In closing... keep this in mind when you are looking for a set of bars at yard sales or on ebay!
