:D

you guys and all your project threads lately have inspired me to get on the ball and fix up the pink clunker.

i traded the old bed to malibuss for his stepside. the stupid part is i had a stepside when i bought it, and traded that one for a fleetside, traded that fleetside for project 88's fleetside which required a 5 day drive :whyme:  , and then traded that one for this blue bed. i lost money on every deal  (remember how expensive that rollpan was jer???:D)

anyhow, i got the new bed on for measurements. i still have to shave the pockets and fix the tears in the surrounding metal due to some buffoon before malibuss having a rack or something in there. all the holes are riped more than i thought, so i'll have to be careful with the welding when i fix them.

anyhow.... some bad pics for now.

i cut the notch hole out and started to pull the dents back in. i got a stud welder to fix all the multiple dents and it works great. this was pretty bad, and still looks bad, but at least i was able to get the front of the bed pulled back ta almost perfect. i'll worry about it later when the bed comes back off.

the bed seems to line up quite well, and i think the notch cover will look tight once it's in there

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v176/djlunchbox/a6.jpg

i just started figuring out how i want this to look. it's to hold all my air supply. i'll figure out the compressor mounts tomorrow, and i think i'm going to make a long sheetmetal box to house all the electrical connections and mount it under the tank.

i hope to have the tank mounts drilled and tapped, the compressors mounted and tapped by tomorrow . i don't know how i'm going to do them just yet, but i want it to look neat and clean. let me knowif you have any ideas.

this is what my old setup looked like. i've been dying to get the bracketry made for well over a year now :head:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v176/djlunchbox/DSCN0913.jpg

i'll keep this updated , the work will not stop until august :D

jer, if you see this, i need bed to cab clearences right under the window. if anyone else with a stepside has the time, can you measure that for me? thanks!

oh yeah, i have a new rollpan, cal-vu's and tailgate handle relocater arriving tomorrow. summit has the best deals , and cheap shipping that i've found in case you were planning on ordering anything.. :dunno: i have yet to find a good price on the trenz 30 bar... i may have to bite it on that deal :puke:

good work DJ, I've been thinking of a fleetside bed, but my stepside is in great shape. I don't want to part with it. Can't wait to see how yours comes out.

well, i didnlt get too much done tonight. took me awhile to drill and tap the tank mounts, and readjust the valve locations.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v176/djlunchbox/DSCN1021.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v176/djlunchbox/DSCN1020.jpg

i think they came out good.

i'm still trying to figure out where to mount my compressors. i'm limited to space, so they can;t go on the ends of the tank. there will be water traps there with 90* elbows to make them fit within the bed. i only have 48" MAX across. i think the tank is 45". lol. which do you guys like better? the first or second?

first IMO.

DjLunchbox
05-18-2006, 08:40 AM
i like that one too, that first one seems too plain. i can angle them nicely on a nice plate and route the hoses and wires so they look good. i tried to mount them between the valves on either side, but it's too close to the dumps and the guage lines. if i do it in the first pic, the guage lines will come out over the comps, and go down inbetween them. (i want to run hardline for those too, jsut until uner the bed. just to dress it up.)

oh yeah, i also got me new stuf from summit yesterday.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v176/djlunchbox/DSCN1024.jpg

i don;t like the roll pan, but it was only 89.99, so what can i expect. it doesn;t fit too well, so that will be fun trying to glass it. i think they popped it from the mold to early and it warped. how am i supposed to attach the top to the bed if it's warped? i can do the glassing on the sides and make it look good, but the top it the part i'm concerned about. i'm not sure how to mount it.

1. return it.

2. FYI, no sportside rollpans fit well. I bought the most expensive one availible (at the time, Bell Tech) hoping for the best.....and it still fit like @ss. My body guy cut it in 3 pieces refit and shapped the ends and got it to where it is today.

Trenz is now owned by Lund...

Anyways, get a precision 31 bar, VERY nice quality...and you don't get that stupid gap on the sides of the grille that make it not look truely flush.

well, a little update.

i'm going really slow due to lack of funds:damnit:

i did decide on how to mount the compressors and for the most part finished the welding. i also decided not to use hardline for a few reasons. i need to be able to take the bed on and off easily because the truck will still have to be painted. plus, copper hardline would look crappy. plus i may run into dot inspection at any given time.... plus... you get the picture.
so, back to the craptacular looking black plastic for now.
i'm still doing the bulkhead fittings on the bedfloor, so it should be neat. here's how it sits now , and should be on the road again by sunday night. i need to get started on the bodywork .

heres how it will sit in the bed though...

ok another update :D

i got the bed bolted on, and the air supply set up finally. my idea for the bulkhead fittings doesn't work too well and is not as neat as i'd like, but it will work for this year. i think i may have to just go back to running the lines right thru the bedfloor :dunno: it was nearly impossibile to get those lines straight. it still looks better than it did, and the truck drives and looks a lot better IMO as well.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v176/djlunchbox/DSCN1048.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v176/djlunchbox/DSCN1044.jpg

i know the wiring is not done, i want to loom it first.
next order of business is to get the bed bodywork done. shave the rails, shave the tailgate, and buy/make a new rollpan. the one from summit is not how i like it. i think i am going to attempt to make a new pan... this should be fun :D if i butcher it too bad, i'll just buy one. nobody sells them how i want them anyhow so why not try :D

hey man, long time no talk. how ya been? yeah, that bumper ended up having a massive load of filler on it..lol. be glad you traded it. it required a ton of bodywork to get like you see it. it must have been bumped at one time before the paint. it's still kicking tho:D u still at quantico?
