here it is.. a sneak peek at what I have been up to..
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j10/low88/DSC00240copy.jpg
Had to back the truck into the garage to get the cab off easier, in the process of pushing it in the driveway and turning it around, it got stuck here.
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j10/low88/DSC00243copy.jpg
Wiring was pretty easy to get out.

todays progress...
transmission pulled, wiring harness out, fuel and brake lines out of frame rail.
I also measured my life away, and was out measuring the body bolt patterns on the cab in the pouring rain. I was forced to do this because my body mounts were SHOT.. and i mean 4" in diameter shot.
I made new bodymounts out of 4x4x1/4" and got two of them tacked in their home today.
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j10/low88/DSC00262copy.jpg
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j10/low88/DSC00261copy.jpg
Still have to cut the bottoms off of them and drill the holes in the right place, but i had to tack them in to get the proper location for the holes for the bushings though.
PS. the rear body/bed mount combination can eat my ****. That thing is such a pain to cut off... I have a collection of bent sawzall blades to kill an army with. not really, but i bent a few lol.

i went 1/4" more than you btw. I dont know if you are far enough along, but just wondering if you can forsee any complications due to me going the extra 1/4"? The lower radiator hose area looks like a PITA, but I think i can work around it if i Z far back enough.

Oh man you are screwed now. In my bodydrop how-to I specifically said not to go 1/4" more because it screws everything up. Might as well give up and start over.:read:
na I cant really see any problems with it, other than the obvious stuff. If worse comes to worse you can cut some spacers out of 1/4 " plate and bolt them in with the bodymounts. No one will ever know.

oh ****... i guess i am commited now.

and jimmy.. thanks for making it look tooo easy in your how to.. I learned that it isnt as easy (or quick) as it appears in your how-to. I know there are a few people on here who think they can bust it out in a weekend once the cab is off, but I would like to see how long it really takes once they get going.
I have had a few people tell me "oh it shouldnt take long, a day for the rails and bodymounts, a day for all the other crap.." eff that is what i say to them.
anyways, im getting there... slow but sure.

Thanks on the congrats. And nothing bent at all when using the straps. I think it was combination of the cab being stipped, and we used two straps to spread the load. I also strapped through the doors because they are getting replaced.
I just got an optimistic call back on a job today, so with any luck this bad bitch will be at carlisle..

I know dude.. what can i say. :fsc1:
In all seriousness, If i didn't do this, the truck would have needed bodymounts soon anyway. While I was making new ones, why not drop them down and do the extra work to lay rocker? Exhaust is looking like it is going to be a PITA, especially if i modify the stock tranny x-member. Im thinking about making a tubular one like jimmyp's... I have to get a cat and a muffler on there somehow, and still manage to dump it out of the body somewhere to be "legal" in CT. Im sure they frown on frame modification, but what ya gonna do..
I don't really think my mom knew what she was signing up for when she said I can have her garage to bodydrop my truck. She was looking at trucks on FSC with me earlier tonight, and wanted me to let everyone know that she gave up her "damn garage for my truck". lol.

I partied a little too hard this weekend and didn't really do anything on the truck.
Only thing i managed to get done was to blend the back half of the stock frame in with the new rails. I still have a bunch more smoothing to do, but its on its way...

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j10/low88/DSC00266copy.jpg
I am going to box that inner section... Where it looks like the 2x4 box ends, it is really slid in the frame about 3" more, but it is just welded to the area that I already boxed.
Edit... looking at these pics makes me realize how sloppy of a worker I am... tools laying everywhere.. lol

05-21-2006, 04:26 PM
how come you didn't drill the holes for the body mounts before you welded them on there?
you could have used your widowmaker drillpress
you ain't a chassis builder until you've built it from scratch!
http://bakyardhackz.com/images/Bodydrop/IMG_2220_small.JPG
Low88
05-21-2006, 04:35 PM
haha.. I would have loved to drill the holes first, but it is easier once they are tacked on because the front and back dimensions are different than each other. The front dimension for the bodymounts is about an inch off compared to the rear, and I just assume tack everything in place and then build a little jig to transfer the locations for the holes off of my cab.
The bodymounts are only tacked, and I plan on marking the proper spots for the holes and taking them off and drilling the holes on my "widowmaker drill press" ;) .
Yeah, I wish i could have stopped over and worked on your beater... but you need to learn how to pick up your phone. Did you get the control arms built?

Well, Live has thrown me some crazy curveballs in the past few weeks... For one, a good friend of mine passed away, which sucked and made me not want to touch my truck.
Either way, I got the engine pulled and started to strip it down, and I finally boxed the drivers side frame rail... Kind of sad for a week or two's worth of progress, but some things are more important at this point in my life. Once I get my life into a groove, It's on, and I can't wait to get back to my truck again.

I wish I started from scratch the first time around... Unfortunatly, the body isnt in the best shape. The cab I have is saveable, But every panel on the truck will be new. You can see the bed in the background...Its purpose nowadays is to be the sponge that eats up any excess paint in my gun.. lol

I busted ass on this thing for the past 2 days, but still have alot of crap to do. Figured I would test fit some panels and get myself giddy at a glance of how low the truck will be.
Panels are still way off in these pics, but I was excited so I grabbed the camera and snapped them anyway.
Anyways, I got the floor cutout in the cab, and its starting to take shape again. Once the floor is done, the cab is coming off for hopefully the last time, and I am going to paint the firewall and backwall, and put new cab corners in...again, because the first set I did was my first stab at bodywork, and the results show that. lol.

and oh yes... I know my panels are beat up. They are OEM and for the most part straight, hence why I am test fitting with them.
No worries, They will all be getting replaced. New fenders, New doors, new hood, new bumper, and I am going to do the 94-98 conversion. The funds are together, its just a matter of borrowing a truck to pick everything up from the body shop. Also, there is a guy locally selling a mint bed for under $500. If that is around next weekend, It will be mine.

Thanks jimmy.
im using the autoloc deluxe kit. self lubricating bushings like jasons, 3 adjustable holes, and its plenty beefy IMO. I got it for $70 shipped, so i can't complain. I was planning on running 1/8", but im worried about getting the window in the new door shell. I took a look at the hinges today, looks like chevy decided to weld them on the door and the cab end of the hinges, talk about a major PITA. im a little nervous about the doors hitting by the bodyline, but ill make it work somehow.
i got them welded and i clamped a strip of steel to them to see how they opened and shut... so far so good. zero binding whatsoever, so im on the right track so far.

You wish you hadn't done what? The suicide doors? I got jasons kit sitting here in my garage but im having second thoughts, I mean I really want them on it's just going to be an insane amount of work.
Good luck with the Autoloc kit, I've seen them first hand and they're nowhere near the quality of SD's.

I just want to drive my truck now. There is alot of extra work that you have to do.
Including:
bracing the entire door
allowing room for the window channels
new interior door handles and/or linkages
blocking off the fender area
front latch mount
and most importantly, getting it to open/close and line up
some sort of latch that locks the door when you shift out of park

Yea ive been reading tons and tons about doing it for a year or so, lots on s10forum, your posts, my buddy did his blazer etc..etc...so I know there is a whole butt load more than just welding up some hinges, cutting some pockets and calling er good.
I mean I have the resources, my trucks been at my one of my best friends house for a couple months now(body man of 20+ years) and he feels we can tackle it without a major issue, but ive just been to hell and back with the truck and I know what kind of issues it has taken to get it to this point. In the four years ive owned it I think I might have put 20k on it? That's an oil change a year haha (we are talking 20xxx kilometers, not miles either haha)
As for the autoloc kit, my buddy's shop had one in stock and he figured it was pretty stout (and it's not bad) but when I got jason's kit I realized why I paid the extra couple hundred bucks, my time isn't really worth the hassle of dealing with a cheap kit either...when I saw the autoloc lambo doorkit it kinda wrecked any future dealings I might have with them.

my kit is just as thick as my roommates suicide doors kit. Both have brass self lubricating bushings, my hinge pins are 3/8",and the arm is just as thick. My kit wasn't in an autoloc box, but it came with autoloc's instructions...I got it from gauge.
i always thought the autoloc kit was pre-spaced, but mine wasnt. maybe i got some off hinges and an autoloc instruction sheet.
Anywho,I took them to my uncle who is an old time hot rodder's house for him to check out. He has done a few installs, and has made his own hinges... He said that they are plenty beefy, and will work fine. They'll be alright, im 100% confident in that.
What did you see thats not so quality?

Your truck is looking really good lots of progress there. I am curious about the cables you have running over the cab of the truck what are those for?
Edit: Sorry I see now that it is just one cable (or something), the reflection in the windshield made it look like two at first.

finally got the bed bodydropped. only a few tacks holding it together, but i still have to tub, and make a notch cover outta the stock bed floor material.
My intention was to just raise the floor to cover everything, but thanks to my oversize notch, my floor would only be like 7" deep, and I think thats ugly. So now im going to make a cover outta the stock bedfloor from my old bed and this one.

worked on the notch cover today. Turned out bigger than I wanted, but its the price I pay for jason's oversize notch that I have, and wanting no holes. Also, my shock mounts required me to go the whole width with the cover. Im pretty pumped with the space behind the notch cover however. Should make traveling to shows pretty easy. Easily fit a suitcase and a cooler in there. I have some ideas up my sleeve for tool storage.

Now my turn to ask advice...

The glue is around $35 but you need a special gun to apply it. If you decide to go that route let me know and I can ship you my gun I have if you PROMISE to get it back to me. taper the edges on the inside and out, lay a little bit of the adhesive in the crack, then you can actually use reinforcement tape and lay over. push it into the adhesive(2-3 pieces) and put another layer of adhesive over it. spread lightly with a spreader. leave for 24 hours and sand.
personally i'd borrow lowgreens gun if thats all you're going to be using it for on the truck and get it back to him. it'll save you some $$$.

So just use adhesive in the crack and lay mat over it? No need for resin at all? The best thing to do is use the re-enforcment tape like project88 said. You can layer it better. What you will want to do is grind the cracks and beyond the cracks with some aggresive paper to rough up the area pretty good then out lay some adhesive down and then a small strip of tape. Lay some more adhesive over that and work the adhesive in with a spread. You will do this a few times, each time using a bigger piece of tape. And no you won't use any resin because this stuff sands and feathers out very nice.

Everything is tacked right now, pulling it off tomorrow to fully weld it. I have about 1/2" of sag which is causing a minor rub by the lower body line. From everybody elses experiences, this is completly normal when its just tacked and unsupported. Could'nt be happier right now.

aircraft remover on the stock hinges shows you where the burn marks are... Drill out those welds and they should pop off easy. The new door shells have the hinges bolted on, so they won't be so bad. I plan on leaving them on for a while until I get everything stiffened up and installed. They are a nice reference point for alignment.
Got any pics of the inside of your doors? Or how you latched them?

We tried that and of course it was clean bare metal underneath haha, what we did (my painters idea) and a pretty good one at that was take a 3 inch cut off wheel and basically cut a checker board into the hinge, so three horizontal slits and then three vertical slits, then we took an air hammer to the hinges and whammo, they popped right off like no one's business, took maybe 10 minutes a hinge.
Also check your PM's~!

started tubbing, No gas in the welder, so everything I did this weekend is just hanging out. Also got new doors, fenders, hood, and soon bumper. I figure it will help get this truck as straight as possible before paint. Maybe ill make carlisle, starting to doubt it though.
Also scored me a flex-a-lite black magic e-fan, supposedly one of best, you can kinda see it in the first pic. Theres a million other things im forgetting, but my trucks slowly getting there.

thanks man, im trying not to get burnt out on this project. there is a little light at the end of the tunnel, and im slowly getting there. If i make carlisle, it will probably be in primer without an interior. Dont know if its even worth taking it in that shape. I'd really love to wire it and fire it up, but theres about 90 other things to do first.
If it wasnt so snowy, id push it outside and take a few pics of it in all its e-coat glory.

As far as the panels, Everything is Keystone. I dont have the money for OEM, and it wouldnt really matter all that much, because getting OEM panels to line up would almost be as big of a pain in the ass as these aftermarket ones. Actually, the drivers side door and the two fenders fit almost perfect. They were all CAPA certified if that makes a difference. The Passenger side door was not, and It is fitting like **** for now, Ill work it out though.

haha if my truck dont make it jeremy, I know where theres a set of torq thrusts you can borrow. But im trying not to think that way. The engine would fire if i ran fuel lines and wired it.
Besides that, its brake lines, fuel tank/pump, paint, line-x the bed, put a halfass interior in it until this winter, finish the dash and wire up the new gauges, and do the other suicide door. I have until August, so its going to be close.

Looks like the list I had last June, Then we threw the birth of my son in there.. It helped to have a few guys working on it..
Other that smoothing my bed out and Line-xing it. A few other minor things, my truck is done.. So if you need some help, just holla! Cracka!

passenger door almost done
Then, I went home and pulled the cab for what I hope is that last time. Starting to run the fuel/brake/air lines. I also wired the engine.
The motor's ugly, but Im going to wait till later to clean it up. I only get to work on this thing a little at a time for now, so I want it to run and drive before I worry about how shiny the engine is.
Also, started cleaning the 18 year old road gunk off of the firewall, and getting it ready for paint. Once the firewall is painted, I can finally set this cab on for real.
I POR15'd the cab floor, and seam sealed the welds where I raised the trans tunnel. Then I flipped the cab onto its back and painted the underside in POR15 as well.

thanks guys.. slow and steady for now. With a little luck, ill get the firewall sprayed soon, the cab on, and ill be ready for carlisle. If the weathers nice, I might spray the firewall next weekend (jeremy, prepare for a phone call!). Once the cabs on, the plan is to get it running, and start the final assembly. Its going to be a bitch squeezing air/fuel/brake lines, and a wiring harness through the backhalf, not looking forward to it.
Still alot of money left to drop before it runs though. Gotta buy a fuel pump, fuel lines, brake lines.. Then a windshield, back glass, shave my rear steps and rough out the bodywork and get it in primer for paint.
Questions to the TBI guys/FSC lords...
I put the wires back in the throttle body for the injectors, and the drivers side one had a rubber 'seat' that is sat in, while the other didn't have it. Is this normal, or am I missing that one?
Anybody ditch their emissions pump and crap and still have the piece that threads into the passenger side manifold? Im in need of one, and not so sure of how much the dealership would charge me for that one.
And, Do I need a special grade bolt for the exhaust manifolds? I seem to have lost a few of them in the teardown. Will grade 5 or 8 work just fine?
Low88

I ended up shaving the radiator overflow tabs, the inner fender tabs, and I did one other 'custom as funk' thing to the firewall. I hope 2 days in the row of sanding is worth it. Ill be able to tell in about an hour when I put the base in the gun.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH finally done.
first of all... THANK YOU JEREMY (southern concepts). I couldn't have done it without all of the help from you.
Secondly, the color is called "envy green". It was only on 2200 Scion XB's in 2006. It was $80 a pint, because It has three pearls and a whole bunch of other fun stuff in it. It still has to grow on me, but the more I see it in light, the more I love it.
I am pretty pleased with how everything layed out, especially since I did it outside with no booth, and this was my first time painting anything ever. The clear layed down pretty nice with a little orange peel, but not as bad as I expected. Next step is to plop the cab on, and get this damn thing started.

Heat is staying, and actually unmodified. The truck never had AC (never even had vents on the dash LOL). The only things custom I did to the firewall were shave the overflow jug tabs, recess the "convenience center" an inch for more tire clearance (square box on the right), and I shaved off those stupid tabs that the inner fenders bolt to. Other than that.. its 100% stock.
