donno if this goes here or in the whatever section. im now doing transmissions at work, and need to buy about $1500 in tools. the main thing i need are impact wobble sockets. id prefer to get snap on or matco. but ive got no problem getting some decent brand to get me by for now. would you guys recommend snap on or matco for these sockets? or what off brands? i need sae and metric in 3/8 and 1/2. on top of that i need a good 3/8 impact, impact extensions, 1/2 air ratchet, and probably shallow 1/2 impact sockets. thats the only chitty thing about this. so other than the tool trucks and ebay, anybody know where to get snap on, matco, and ingersoll for a fairly good price.

I get all of my tools off the MAC truck for a lot cheaper than the other trucks and the tools are made by the same company.Hope this helps a little.

Although I don't consider'em 'off brand' most of my impact tools are Craftsman. No complaints.

Harbor Freight comes w/ limited lifetime guarantee. You could always sell them later, IF you still want the NAME brand.

Tooltopia.com also has good prices on SK.
SK is a solid brand with a good reputation. I've used some of theirs and have a friend who uses nothing else. Not sure if you have an SK dealer/truck in the area, but I've seen good prices on that site and the one Jokeman listed.

Never once had a problem with Chicago Pnematic (CP) impact sockets- HF and now Sears has begun carrying them. Not to sure about the wobble sockets though, but for the price compared to the others- I will buy CP all day long. I have yet to break, crack or even mar the surface on any of the ones that I have.

snap on truck comes on a regualr basis
thats reason enough
you are going to be making a living with your tools, get stuff that will last you a lifetime
i have mostly snap on, a few things from MAC cuz they are a bit cheaper, and no experience with matco. i have had no problems with my snap on items, besides a dodgy flashlight that was replaced on the spot.
all of their air/power tools are rebranded from other places, you are better off finding an ingersol rand dealer in your area, it will be much cheaper and the same quality.
i tried getting by with a few cheapies from harbor freight and northern tool. they broke within a week. and i mean the impacts literally exploded.
snap on will also finance ANYONE if you dont mind high interest. if you luck out, your driver may do a thing called truck credit. he keeps track of what you owe, you pay like 20 bucks a week interest free.
i have never once regretted any of my snap on tools. well worth the investment. think of it, you are going to be using them for 8+ hours a day for possibly the rest of your life.

ill never buy anything mac. few reasons for it. 1) i dont like how their tools look. look too cheap to me. 2)one of our guys never showed up. then another took over. after awhile he started skipping weeks. he hasnt been back in 6 months AT LEAST. plus there was at most 1/2 the stuff as snap or matco on his truck. same size truck too. i was thinking about buying from one of those tool sites. i dont care what kind of warranty they come with, i live in alaska. if it breaks, id be without it for at least 2 months. in the mean time, id have to buy one off the trucks, so id be out even more money. our matco guy is real nice, i always bs with him every week even if im not buying anything. snap on guys pretty cool, but for some reason i dont care for him. both of them do the truck credit, but i dont use it - yet. i buy about 80% of my snap on and matco stuff off ebay. and what i dont have yet, my mentor doesnt mind me using.

Amen on the Mac thing, they have a few good products that I swear by. (1/4 sealed head air ratchet) But really.... they suck, both in service and product. It's a shame. I want to like them, but they just don't cut it. Then again I've gotten both great and horrible service from all three (companys) at various points in time.
I have two Snappy 3/8 wobbles w/ the pin bought in August 2001.(1 locking and 1 ball retainer) All of the transmissions that I work on are held in w/ Etorx so I have to use a seperate socket anyway. They havent broken yet.
I like the Matco pinless sockets, but my Matco guy decided two months ago that he didn't want to sell tools anymore.:bawl::loser:
SK/Facom makes a 1/2 to 3/8 23" impact extention that I like because it transfers all of the power instead of absorbing it
My advice is this, buy once, buy the best available to you, buy from someone who isn't a jerk and engrave your name in it.

most of my impact wobbles are Snap-On, a couple are craftsman. I like the snap-on's better because they're MUCH smaller in diameter and fit many places the craftsmans won't. alot of my reg. impact sockets are S-K.. I like S-K a great deal (all of my SAE wrenches are SK).
at work we use Wright brand impact sockets, don't know much about the company, but they're lifetime, USA made and expensive (but what 2"+ impact socket isn't)

I'm extremely happy with it. I use it a lot w/ my 1/2" cordless impact. It's the only one of it's type that I'm aware of. SK part # 46174. I got it from http://www.ultimategarage.com/ with whom I've been doing business with for 6 years now. I also found it at http://www.sjdiscounttools.com/sk46174.html for a little cheaper.
I have the Snappy 3/8 36" extension but rarely use it (9 times in 5 years?) It's just too flimsy being 36" long, but when I needed it, it was priceless.
Checked out Wright tool - ISO 9001, Made in USA w/ USA Steel - that's definately worthy of applause
