Looking for new tire advice

My truck (in the sig) has been absolutely eatin' the back tires off. They are the 245-70-16 Firestones that come on them. The guy that I bought the truck from said that he had just replaced them all before I bought it. The front ones look like new. I've got half dollar size chunks missing on the back passenger side! I don't drive it hard or I have yet to do a burnout on purpose. I've towed a little bit. I guess what I'm looking for is a tire that will last a little longer. I bought a set of Cooper STT's for my other HD and I really liked them. I'm either going to get those again or go with the ST's. My next question is should I go with the 265-75-16 or the 285-75-16? The 265 is a load range E and 10 ply vs. the 285 being load range D and 8 ply. I figured the 265 would be a harder tire but the 285 might be better at keeping them from turning over so much. There's only $5 difference in price per tire at the shop I getting them at too. Which do you all recommend? Thanks

If you are going with the 285 size, I would try the Michelin LTX M/S in the 10 ply version. It's a killer riding tire with the load carrying capacity that your truck needs. It's not the cheapest tire around, nor is it the coolest looking, but it will do the trick.

Another option is the Michelin XPS Rib or XPS Traction. They only come in the 235-85-16 size, but they are BEASTS! They are steel belted sidewall tires that will handle all of the BS you can give 'em. Again, they aren't cheap and if you don't carry a massive amount of weight they might be overkill.

Just dealt on a decent '04 2500HD - noticed abnorm tire wear
Had them check wheel align- as repl. tires went on
Sure enough - 3 of the 4 were out of spec & needed correction

I ended up getting the Cooper Discoverer ST's 285-75-16 and I had an alignment done. I guess we'll see what happens. I did notice less tire spin in the rain the other night so maybe going up in tire size will help.

my opinion, bridgestone duellers or revos. got the duellers first cause i couldn't afford the revos at the time. i now have been running the revos with 21,000 miles on them and they are, in my opinion, top of the line. these fawkers hook up, period.

The tires that were on it were Firestone Steeltex 245-70-16's load range E.

BF Goodrich T/A KO's. IMO the best.

There's no better IMO - BF Goodrich All-Terrain's are a little pricey but really aren't too badly priced considering. I'll never put anything else on any truck, period. They get better traction off-road than anything else I've run, and they perform on-road too - they're pretty quiet and they look good. Plus my current set has gone over 50,000 hard-driven miles on a truck that's got horrible front alignment issues, and they still have a lot of miles left on them. My previous set went 60,000+, with those same issues (yeah I know - I should fix that). I worked for a tire store for several years both in the bays doing the installs & service & behind the counter selling them, and never came across anything that came close to impressing me like these do.

I don't know about them KILLING the BFG's - IIRC back when BFG brought out the A/T KO's they were cleaning up across the board on- & off-road, even beating strict off-road tires in test after test by multiple 4X/truck/off road magazines...

That was several years ago and things may have changed since. I've never personally run them, but that being said, I worked several years in a tire shop, and I don't think the Duelers are as good a tire - better than a lot of others maybe, and not bad at all in their own right, but I hold w/ BFG A/T KO's being king of the hill...

this is just the latest duelers ive experienced.....never even seen them before 2 years ago......

There both good but off road BFGs will kill them and IMO the dueler is better on the road.
