I am looking at the D-max and was wondering if there are any years to avoid? I have heard stuff about the 00-02 as being quite a bit worse? is this true? And also what can I expect to pay for one, like maybe and 02-03 with 100,000+? I know absolutly jack about diesels so even the obvious to you guys may be important for me to learn. Thanks in advanced.

Prices are going to very by region. All the Duramax's are good engines. True, the newer one are a bit better as most of the kinks have been worked out. Only real trouble spot are injector failures left and right but as I understand it GM is warranting them for 200,000 miles.

from what i've learned from my cousins fiance (used to work at a chevy dealership) is that the early d-max is more suseptable to lower end damage if you do any major performance mods, but the 03-newer engines are much better.

Some 01&02 had injector trouble, 03&04 had a few, and I haven’t heard of any 05 or 06s with any. Best thing is to get the VIN and have someone at a dealer run it to see the history IMO a truck that has had injector replaced on more than 3 occasions under 200K should be avoided. Some 04&05s had overheating problem which will be see with a VIN check again. The only motor upgrades that may help it hold more are on the 06s and up, but this is only a concern if you plan on running over 500 RWHP daily on fuel only. I wouldn't avoid any year of Dmax you just need to know how to pick them.

To my knowledge GM found the cause of the injector problems to be the fuel filter & they've got another 1 now that takes care of all that...

If helps, but the filter is far from a cure.

Any port in a storm though, right? Warranty issue fixes usually aren't much more than a band-aid if they can get away with it...
