6.5 Diesel

I am about to buy a 95 GMC 2500 diesel from a friend. He told me that the engine was replaced with a 97 6.5, is there any difference between the 95 and 97 6.5s? Also, how much horsepower and torque do these engines have? Thanks for the replies.

Fortunatly for you, the '97 has some cooling upgrades done to it that help when towing heavy loads. This includes a high output water pump and a dual thermostat housing. There is a well known problem with these engines, but it's an easy fix. On the side of the Injection Pump is an electronic device that tends to malfunction over time due to heat. The fix is to buy a new unit (PMD), a wiring extension and a heat sink. Mount the new PMD on the heat sink out of the engine bay and it should offer trouble free operation. Symptoms of a bad PMD include hard starting once the engine is warm, and/or intermitant stalling.

Hp is around 200 IIRC, but I'm not sure about torque.

The 97 engine also differs from the 95 in that the 97 has oil spray nozzles to cool the underside of the pistons....the material they took out of the block to fit the nozzles *may* have contributed to a weaker block in 97 and 98 (506)...

What would be city and highway mpg for a 6.5 with a 5 speed manual tranny? I know it has to be better than my 5.7, Thanks for the help.

Thats sounds great, My 5.7 only gets around 12 in the city and 16on the highway.
