First off, I spent the last 2 hours searching the threads for this. I am curious what a custom tune can do for my 5 speed. From what I can see it is pretty much all about the shift points. Is that where most of the milage gains come in? I have a 97 Z71 with a 5.7 and a 5 speed by the way. I'm getting 15mpg now with 35's and 3.73 in the rear. I think thats pretty good allready. I'm really considering going with the Wait4me, but first want to know if it has much to offer me with a manual tranny. Anyone with the 5 speed done it yet?

I've been wondering the same thing!!
I have an '06 4x4 4.8 5sp 4.10's.
It seems that half the gains are from shift points and taming torque management.(which I've been told stick trucks don't have)

If anyone has a custom tune in their 5sp truck, It'd be nice to hear your thoughts.

I have a 2500 five speed truck and yes, a wait4me tune really changed things. The manual trucks do have torque management and an abuse mode. Can't speak for the 97 but the 06 truck will benefit.

i never had a custom tune done but i had a jet chip on my s-10 and the only difference i noticed was each gear had about 5 more mph to it. not worth the money i think. but then again that was only a chip.

Seems to me the only thing going for tune is I can set the speedo for the bigger tires. I've heard it leans out the mixture too. Think I'm gonna call Jesse or hannah at wait4me and see what they say, i'll let yall know.

You can get all the same adjustments as the ones with an auto, except the tranny adjustments. Those you don't need.

Just got off the phone with Wait4Me, heres the scoop. Pretty much what 96Silverao just said. Still can tune for gas milage and performance, just a little more dependant on the activeness of your lead foot, but has the ability to increase mileage. Hannah E-mailed me the info, I'll put it here to share with you. Said there is a week and a half turnaround time right now, thats with shipping.

Wait 4 Me Tune Information

Here is some info on what we can do for typical mileage and horsepower gains:
87-90 octanes will give 1-2 miles per gallon better gas mileage and 15-20 more horse power.
91-93 octanes will give 2-4 miles per gallon better gas mileage and 25-30 more horse power.
This will vary depending on driving habits and quality of gas used. Using 10% or higher ethanol content will decrease gas mileage as it is filler.

I'm sure I will, I'm gonna head out now and see how tall my 35's really are so I can send the info in and get the ball rolling. I think I'm gonna give running the higher octane go-go juice a try. If I can get another 2 or3 mpg out of it it will be worth it. If not, I'm gonnna get headers eventually and will get the re-tune for the lower grade stuff.

All right tune is ordered, got the one with a new PCM. I'll try and remember to update this after I get it installed and run a tank of gas through.

yes, the TM does make a difference on the newer 5 speeds. J.Whitten removed TM on his 5 speed joe gibbs truck and noticed a difference...it doesn't bogg when you rev it and release the clutch for a fast launch. Good luck with the tune.

Since there isn't to much info on this, I figured I'd add a quick update.
I got a tune from PCMforLess for my 06 4.8 5sp 4x4 4.10 truck.
If you are on the fence because it is a stick truck, it is worth the money.
In my case the best way I can describe it is this.... When passing or merging on the highway I could never tell what gear I needed to be in forth, or third. There wasn't that much of a difference in the seat of the pants power. Now with the tune, its obvious I need to be in third!!! Anything over 2500rpm, third pulls hard (as hard as a 4.8 anyway) before nothing happened until after 4000rpm. In just normal driving, it feels better everywhere.
Customer service from PCMforLess is OUTSTANDING!!! Bryan will answer all of your questions and truly seems excited in making your truck run to its full potential. Whether on the phone or email, the response was quick and friendly. It was worth the extra money to me.
