I've got a question for anyone on here who uses precision measuring tools. For my machine tool class I've got to buy my own micrometer set, dial caliper, and other assorted devices. I've always been stuck with the cheap stuff and it's costed me so I really need to invest in a good set I can use for a long time. I've been told to buy a set from Starret but I don't have that kind of cash on hand right now. Does anyone know a company that makes micrometers and dial calipers that are not cheap but will get the job done for the time being?

Mitutoyo makes good stuff. You should try to find some estate or yard sales.Sometimes you can find that stuff cheap. Also used tool places.

Check out McMaster-Carr. They have decent prices.
If you look through McMasters catalog they have "economy" stuff in there that might last you a while. Brown & Sharp may be a little cheaper than Starrett. They are OK.

Etalon or Mitutoyo are my choices, sometimes you'll find deals worth the risk on Ebay.
http://www.longislandindicator.com - I've never dealt with these guys personally but I was recommended to them. There's a good deal of info about measuring tools throughout the site.

Check out ENCO (use-enco.com) They had a bad rep years ago when they were located in Chicago but they were bought out by MSC (http://www1.mscdirect.com/cgi/nnsrhm) and reopened as a catalog sales out of Las Vegas. Today ENCO still sells a lot of import stuff but it's gennerally real good quality. Or you can order from MSC (http://www1.mscdirect.com/cgi/nnsrhm). Remember you get what yo pay for and in the long run nothing beats quality

Thanks for the input guys. For now I've settled on a basic Brown & Sharpe set to get me by.

edit- just saw this on the enco site and it's the same thing I have. Only I got it for a lot less from a friend.
