View Full Version : LB7 or LLY Firestrike87 09-10-2006, 12:47 PM Which Durmax is better? What is the difference between the two? Big Angry 09-10-2006, 01:32 PM Which Durmax is better? What is the difference between the two? It's a preference thing, I am partial to my LLY, the LB7s were plagued with injector issues, some LLY's are overheaters. The LB7's have a 200k warranty on injectors now, mine doesn't. The LLY is from the block up, basically a completely different motor, VVT turbo, instead of a wastegated turbo, the injectors are a lot easier to get to if you ever have to do work to one, different HP and torque ratings, there are more, but those are the main differences. Firestrike87 09-10-2006, 02:17 PM If I am looking for used, is there any way to tell if an LLY was an overheater? Big Angry 09-10-2006, 03:42 PM If I am looking for used, is there any way to tell if an LLY was an overheater? hook 10,000lbs to it and drag it up a 7% grade for about a mile or so, with the a/c cranked, preferably in warmer weather. Otherwise, no. What are you buying it for? To hot rod? or to tow big arse loads? If you don't tow a real big load, you may never know, nor may it matter. But there are no tell tale signs. Firestrike87 09-10-2006, 04:56 PM I am looking at diesels so I can have the power IF I WANT to hot rod it. By no means will I beat on it, I don't beat on anything, but I want to ability to everynow and again. Also, I want to be able to tow a heavy load if it is needed. I would much rather be overkill on power than possibly pushing a 6.0 to its limits. So in that case, I may never know if it will overheat, but then the question arises about the new diesel fuel that is coming out. How will that affect a 2004.5 in 4 or 5 years? or longer? By hot rodding it, I don't necesarily mean "Beat it" or abuse it. I don't tow a damn thing with mine, but I like having the power it does. How heavy? How often? I would take my chances with an LLY over the injector issue with the LB7. There is a fix for the LLY, it's just not recognized or paid for by GM. The fuel will be out this year, so the only way to know how it will affect an LLY in 4 or 5 years is check back in 4 or 5 years, my crystal ball isn't working, lol. The fuel is going to have the same affect on all Dmax engines, be it LLY or LB7. If I were going to buy any other engine than a Dmax, it would be Cummins all the way, not a 6leaker from ferd. Firestrike87 09-10-2006, 05:12 PM By fuel issues, I mean is it going to change how the vehicle runs and operates? Is there going to be power loses, are the vehicle owners going to have to change anything to their specific vehicles to be able to use this new fuel? Or am I just overeacting? The point is NO ONE KNOWS. Don't sweat it. duratothemax 09-11-2006, 11:20 AM The LLY is from the block up, basically a completely different motor. LLY's and LB7's are identical except for the turbo, injectors, ECM, turbo, and heads. All of the internals, rods, pistons, blocks, are identical/interchangable. I wouldnt go so far as to call it a completely different motor.... "some" LLY's overheat because of the variable vane turbo and EGR. Ok Ben, how's about somewhat significantly changed, is that more accurate?:pow: :cheer: duratothemax 09-11-2006, 04:43 PM Ok Ben, how's about somewhat significantly changed, is that more accurate?:pow: :cheer: mehhh...now you're getting technical and splitting hairs! :aniteef: :cheer: vBulletin v3.5.1, Copyright ©2000-2008, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
