View Full Version : New plans, HUGE project
WarnOffRoad 10-21-2006, 01:24 PM Hi, everyone! its been a while but im back with a new project I think yall may like.
Here it goes, Ive got a 79' K5 blazer that I spent a GREAT deal of time and money collecting parts and building. Its got 12" lift super lift springs, HPD60 front, GM 14 bolt FF rear, both with 5.13 gears, NP 200 t-case, ALL 1410 yokes, stainless brake lines, cross over steering, brand new 44" tires with wheels, blah blah. Bottom line, I took the 383CI and 2wd th400 out of it to put in a camaro project, so im left with a roller K5 with everything I need to put a newer silverado up HIGH.
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid210/p85e9143bb7fc7eeb730d40593fc0d99d/ededc539.jpg
I plan on making new hangers, traction bars, small stuff like that, maybe $150 in steel tops, and extend the drive shafts ($50 a shaft). This entire build will only take 2 weeks or so to do, everyting will be powder coated fabtech blue and dark gray. Problem is i dont have a truck yet!
Within the next 2 weeks I will be ready to buy with cash, im looking for a ext cab 2wd with under 90,000 miles, my question to yall is, should i go with a 97-98 or a 99-02ish? They are easy to find both for about the same price, but what is the best generation to use? I prefer the 99 and up inside and out, but im not picky, any input? thanks, I cant wait to start building!

part it out, scrap it? Its got a clean title, almost no rust, full carpet, Perfect dash pad, all lights work, harness is still good, brand new 05 silverado gray buckets up front and comes with a new driver side front fender, $500? $600 with warn 8274 winch and bumper?
crew cabs are too much $, i cant stand long beds, and 1500s are more in my price/clean range. why spend extra $ on a 3/4 when its all getting cut out?
Gerald 10-21-2006, 03:37 PM If you want to sell the springs and lift stuff, let me know!

well, the point of this priject is because i already have everything to build. Sorry but i gotta keep the stuff
Maddog411 10-21-2006, 03:57 PM Go with a 99-02, it will be more unique that way.

Arctic_Scrap 10-21-2006, 07:06 PM The nbs transfer case won't work right with a strait axle conversion and the pumpkin is on the wrong side for the transfer case. I would use a 98 or older fsc without autotrac and get rid of the chevy 60 front and get a ford 60 front so it matches with the chevy transfer case drop.

I love those tires. I had a set of 17/40s on my yota. For some reason, they just don't dig down like a bogger or TSL, so they keep you "on top" of the deep stuff and keep on truck'n.:burn:

BadBowtie03 10-22-2006, 12:07 AM I love gumbo monster mudders.... they are bad ass... anyone know if they still make them and where to buy them? We had them on a 78 CJ5 with 17/40's... it would float over anything...
BadBowtie03 10-22-2006, 12:07 AM oh yeah.. I almost forgot... go with a NBS and I like the Idea of a RCSB... small and simple.

Correct me if I'm wrong WornOffRoad but you wanted a 2wd truck right? So then you are just going to take the transfer case out of the K5 and you can put it on whatever side it needs to be on for the axle that you have?
ChevyMan02 10-22-2006, 01:46 AM The axle is drivers side drop and he already has a t-case to match already bolted to a trans and motor so he's just gonna replace the 2wd motor/tranny with his motor/trans/t-case. I'd go 2003 you'll want it later on. If I could do it all over again I would have gotten an NBS when I had the chance. Dont get me wrong I love my OBS and its a little more durable and easier to find parts for and work on, but on a major project like that I'd want it done on a newer truck if you got the money.

NBS t-case? I have a NP200 center drop 1.5 ton t-case so it doesNT matter what axle i use up front, but it is a ford HPD60, its works great with what i have now on the blazer. im buying a 2WD truck for the 2wd style tranny.

ha you beat me to it!
Keep the K5? I would but its just an old truck, bottom line. I love the looks of the newer silverados, plus right now I have a 05' F350 CC SB diesel thats got 7" lift and 38s that i want to bring back down to 5" and 35s, because I run dump trailers. So my lift bug is killing me and I just want a clean relyable truck on 44s, that i can take to the beach or play around town with, but still tear up "trucks gone wild" events, of course!
Thanks everyone for the support! looks like ill be going with a 99-01ish silverado, id prefer a step side, i dont know why but i LOVE the curves on them, mostly when lifted. Ive found 2 or 3 in my area for around $9,000 which anything under 10k was in my price range. Sorry no 6.0s or 4L80es, (maybe when the 4L60e blows) or HDs, just too exprnsive here in florida, clean trucks go for BIG money around here. There are A LOT of 00's 2wd 80k miles that are $14,000. But ill do the best I can with what I have to spend. Hopefully ill be picking one up here within the week.
01maroonz71 10-23-2006, 04:05 PM what happened to the yellow zr5???

I didn't notice you were already running a ford front axle, guess I should have paid more attention to the pic. If you want to transfer all of this stuff to a nbs chev though you cannot use the factory t-case in the nbs.

Even if I got a 4x4 which im not, why couldnt i? My T-case is an independant case(DOESNT BOLT TO TRANNY), a drive shaft goes from the tranny to the T-case, It drops straight down, so i could run ANY axle I want, and still utilize a stock t-case. My last build had this set up, it had 4 wheel low low. The output shaft on the factory case just didnt get hooked up to anything.

WarnOffRoad 10-23-2006, 08:58 PM As i stated in the first post, i will be powder coating everything under this truck. The last truck I did for a buddy came out like this (dont mind the trac bar being plumbers pipe, that was last minute crap, dont trust a buddy to get the correct metal)

Since im looking for a black, charcoal, pewter, or white truck, I was thinking of doing fabtech blue for the springs and drop breakets, and a dark gray for the second color. any input on a second color? keep in mind the secondary color needs to be more of a shade then a color.
WarnOffRoad 01-29-2007, 09:30 AM alright well finally i picked up this truck about two weeks ago, it's a 99' 2wd ext cab with a 5.3L, i lucked out on the 5.3 i looked at 4 and had top pass them up because they were the 4.8Ls. Anyways heres what ive got so far.....
These pics are about 2 weeks old but they atleast show you what she looks like. Yes she is sitting on the ground currently, and is basically done, just waiting on break lines, steering box (gotta convert the rack and pinion) and im almost done mounting the t-case.
specs:
front axle: HP Dana 60 5.13 gears
Rear axle: 14 bolt full float 5.13 gears
T-case: independent M-37 (NP200, 1,5 ton rating)
U joints: ALL 1410
Springs: 12" super lifts all around, with over loads takin out for a softer ride
Shocks: 36" procomp es9000s (its what i had sitting around)
Tires: 44" gumbo mudders, basically TSLs only last longer and MUCH deeper tread
Fener height: 63.25 (at low hanger settings) 64.25 at higher setting

sdillinger 01-29-2007, 11:42 AM Just read this post for the first time. Nice looking truck(s)!
Just FYI I saw the yellow S10 Crew in Chicago in July or August. The guy driving it was a couple blocks away doing some work on a nearby house for about a week.
tomshouse516 01-29-2007, 03:24 PM truck is sickkk came out awsome.
ChevyMan02 01-29-2007, 10:43 PM Nice looks like a good project bad ass shop too. Post some good pics of the brackets you make/buy and how everything comes out.
WarnOffRoad 01-29-2007, 11:54 PM well all the hanger and shackle mount brakets have been hand made by either plasma cutter, band saw or saw zaw. The truck is not done yet, that pic was jsut a teaser mock up.
the rear shackle mounts, i guess just basic brop brakets, made from 3/8s" flat stock. Theyll get cross membered together and beefed up more when i can figure out how to the spare tire out, this damn thing didnt come with the key :banghead:
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid223/p9442bd17bbccf5a717e576cea2457413/eadedd24.jpg
temp lower and upper shock mounts, i plan on using that same bar, but id doing 4 shocks with 2 outside the current ones and lower on the hoop, kinda making an umbrella look of shocks.
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid223/pa1a10be8b612df05d3ae848a6e2c0aae/eadedd27.jpg
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid223/pfc2697966b8db23921fb1c82cf13f5e8/eadedca5.jpg
Front hangers were build out of 6x2 3/16 tube for a base, then 3/8s flat stock cut down to make the hangers reach a total drop of 11 inches from frame to bolt hole. Yes i know theyre kinda bare, but like i said, ill beef and gusset things up as the fabrication stage nears an end. And you can see i have yet to cut off out the factory suspension mounts, im not lazy i just wanted to spend the time seein this thing on the ground :cheer:

the shackle mount is made of 3/8s in plate and pretty much beefs up the frame as it boxes in both sides (inside and out) and the bottom all the way to the top of the frame rails, all the drill holes are for welds to make that much more contact area with the factory metal. The shackles are more 3/8s metal and are 6"s from hole to hole, which mount to some poly bushings that are welded to a 3/8s" plate that is welded to the bottom of 3/8"s plate that got welded to the frame. Trust me, these shackles arent going ANYWHERE. I just gotta finishe welding everything gother when im 100% sure thats where i want them, because there is no going back after.
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid223/p72f4139d728c19d7718af349ca5085ba/eadedced.jpg
Now to make this 4x2 a 4x4, im using an independant NP200. Very similar to the np205, this is a little stronger and offers 2 rear out put shafts; a lower and an upper. Plus its a stand up case, allowing me to run most any front axle i want. Most people use the upper rear output for a 5th break or a parking break, but im just going to leave it alone. Anyways, to mount this thing in there i built a sub frame. Yes it hangs down a good bit, but i guess its not much different then yalls torsion bar drops, only hangs down 9" from the bottom of the frame, but is still 27" from the ground. It's made of 2x2" 3/16"s square tube. Plus this gives me a good base for a future 4 link set up.

The sub frame isnt attatched yet, the lift arms are just holding it in place while i finish getting the t-case mounted in, which only the bottom mount is done. As for mounting the sub frame, I need to shoot back down to the metal store and get some 1/4" thick 3" angle. That way i can unbolt this thing and lower it down to drop the t-case if ever needed, god forbid i granade this 1.5 ton chunck of iron.
and a final shot i took for the night, ya its tall for 44s and the wheels are ugly. Im workin on it, i plan on running 49" michilne XLs with some moto metal 20s to fill in the wheel wells, and using these as beater wheelin tires.

Any tips are suggestions are welcome.
anyone know how to change out this rack and pinion steering for a box? thats pretty much my biggest worrie right now, other then that im just in need of time to build more brakets.
I guess its not too bad for an ALMOST 20 year old kid that goes to school full time, works 42 hrs a week and still gets drunk on the nights off.
All thats needed; steering box, beef up rear shackle and hanger mounts, finish welding front shackle mounts, beef up front hanger, weld in some tow hooks, hook up the breaks, hook up the front shocks, cut out old suspenion brakets front and rear, hook up trac bar up front, maybe a sway bar up front, finish up the t-case and sub frame, and get drive shafts fitted. So far im only a week into this project, well see how long it takes to do the rest.
TrmBrainInjury 01-30-2007, 03:54 PM I've never done it(I want to), but what about a hydraulic steering set up?
bggrnchvy 01-30-2007, 06:15 PM The joints look tight and it looks fairly solid and it may be the camera doing it but the HAZ on the 3/16" 2x2" looks pretty small for the thickness. Are you sure you had enough heat in those welds?
The shackles still worry me as all plate shackles do without webbing or additional outer support. Also if you round the corners the finished product looks many times better.
I know you probably don't have access to one but some bent tubing instead of peiced together square for the center drop would make it look so much better.
I assume with that much drop from the brackets you'll tie them together with tubing?
Just my thoughts as I look over it, very ambitious project though and it's turning out pretty well, if a little tall:aniteef:

what kind of tires are those?
WarnOffRoad 01-31-2007, 09:25 AM I've never done it(I want to), but what about a hydraulic steering set up?
I may go with assist, the these tires really arent that hard to turn with just a box. Plus my drag link has almost no angle at all, so i can still run a box just fine. Its just getting it mounted thats a pain. Full hydrolic steering would probably be cheaper, but have u ever drivin a tractor down the road? its im possible to keep straight, plus its not exactly legal, otherwise i would most likly end up going that road

For the 3/16s tube i had the welder (millermatic 251) on a setting i usually use to weld 1/4 stuff.
as far as the shackles, those are just pieces i had laying around, i didnt actually build those for this truck, my buddy is having a set lazer cut for me , and those will be tied together in the middle with a brace.
i do have a tubeing bender actually, and i really did want to build one out of tube, but tube is just so much harder to work with then this simple square design. From what ive seen most of the 2.5 tone trucks run sub frames like this in my area, so ill go with what i know works.
yes i will be tieing in all the drop brakets, as i stated above "crossmembered" i just need to get that spare tire out of the way! and the gas tank is going to be fun to work around for the rear hangers, ill break out the tube bender for those.
yes i know its tall, but like i said, im building this for 49s, wihch are about 7" bigger then my current 44s, and i plan on useing the 44s for play.
thanks for the comments

what kind of tires are those?
tires are gateway gumbo mudders, these are what were used about 10 years before tsls came to market. i dont believe they make them anymore. But the tread is MUCH deeper then TSLs or boggers, and i picked them up brand new with wheels and tires for $600, a deal i couldnt pass up.

I personally dont like the 99-02. I would either get a 98 or an 03
EDIT- WOW, I didnt read all the way up to the 3rd page, no idea it was already under way.
Thats one of the hottest silverados I've ever seen. I'm loving it man.
ChevyMan02 01-31-2007, 09:31 PM Nice everything looks good. Great job. Wish I had the shop and tools to take on that kind of project easily. Cant wait to see it finished.

WarnOffRoad 02-01-2007, 09:01 AM how about a closeup to see what we're really looking at here?

WarnOffRoad 02-01-2007, 11:55 AM Does anyone know what a stock c1500 NBS fender measures? im just wondering about how much suspesnion lift this thing has, because thats basically the #1 question ive been getting.
Thanks

it appears to have a draglink and/or a panhard bar in it. what is the piece with the two round holes in it?
WarnOffRoad 02-25-2007, 09:55 AM I tied the T-case whoop in with another cross member on the frame just for a little extra strength, also to keep the bolt on and removable theme, i simply drilled a hole in the tab and welded a nut inside the tube

Got the rear hangers mostly finished in these pics, the mounts are the same as the sub frame ones. I also cut a tab into the back side of them for a tube crossmember, why so low? This will allow me to clear the gas tank.

rear hanger crossmember, i finally got the guts to cut the spare tire out and run before it fell on me.

This is why I wish i just got a 4x4, had to cut out the entire crossmember to clear the steering box that im going to have to mount up in there. The box is brand new and belongs to a 97 k1500. I plan on boxing the frame with 3/8s plate, drilling and mounting it in.

and for the pic most asked for, "what are we looking at here?" aside form the drag link, and trac bar hooked up, its all done.
