hey how hard is it to do the fenders? i kinda thoutgh of getting a front set for my truck...

prerunsilverado
01-18-2007, 05:42 PM
well in the picture i have them just "set" in place so i could mock up arms and do some geometry but fiberglass is a bitch. they definatly dont fit anywhere close to as good as factory (duh) so you have to kinda shape and fit them to your truck. these are hannemanns 5" flair, and i needed every inch when i cycled the wheel into the fender.

please tell me you have a front end built and that your not going to run white brotastic sicky knar wide fenders and no front end.

HA HA no im not goin to run 5 inch flare ones... i just have a fab 7 inch with 15x10's so my tires stick out enough to run a three inch flare set ( trac increased about 3.5 per side i beliver with tires and spindles). I believe the hanneman set like that looks almost stock except for a 3 inch buldge around the whell well opening and they allow for a larger tire.. I honestly think they just look awesome and was just tossing around the idea of putting on a set when the summer gets here..

it would either be the haneman or the glass works unlimited set.. (both look different)
but deff not the 5 inch variaty your running lol

prerunsilverado
01-18-2007, 09:21 PM
check out www.off-roadfiberglass.com. they have 3 inch i believe.

fabtech_chevy
01-18-2007, 11:00 PM
yea ive looked there before but i think most are coversions or require a diff hood, and i dont need to do that much work... i think if i do put a set on ill use the hanemann 3 inch flare because they arent to extreme looking ( nothing like your full blown desert racer fenders)

But you mentioned that the flares are a bitch.. did they come with holes pre drilled or anything?? thanks

oh and heres the link to what i want..
http://www.hannemannfiberglass.com/ProductPages/HF5008.html

that wouldnt be to extreme would it?

prerunsilverado
01-19-2007, 06:47 PM
nah with 10 inch rims and the lift it should match. you could probably draw a line and the fenders would match the outer edge of the wheel. cause i have 285s on 8 inch rims and cst spindle and they stick out 2 inches so you will be good.

um they come "raw". no holes and with rough edges that you have to cut and shape a little, sometimes more, depends on the mold and the set you get.

Updates + Pictures!
I knew I could count on Camburg despite what some people have told me. To make a long story short I decided to get the spindles straight from them. I talked directly with Scott and he got them all set up for me. Major props to him. He helped me out getting the right parts I needed and also before with the million questions at the off road expo so I was stoked he treated me good once again. This is what I brought home. So the build continues...

No sense in carrying a spair with no jack (factory one doesnt count and doesnt work with lift) so I purchased a aluminum 4000lb jack from Harbor Freight, built a skid plate for it, and a quick release mounting setup for the truck...

If you look close on the last picture you can see the hood pin that holds it in, its just under the grab handle. Front is held in by the original wheel spindle and tabs I cut out for them to slot into. Came out good.

Alright here is the pictures from last weekend before I tore it all off and put the stock stuff back (sunday) on so I could drive to work monday. Remember these are the mock up arms and not the finals. I cut out some quick plating for the upper uniball to sit in and for the arm tubing to connect to. Final design with be different but same geometry. Cycled 20 inches the night before (sat) with the tire tucked as far up into the fenders as possible. Decided a more reasonable number would be 18 unstrapped and in the end, 16/17 strapped. Had to change caster and camber numberous times but it ended up comming out to 14 degrees of caster at bump and 5 at droop. that is with the front end of the truck jacked up so i figure it will be more like 12 bump/ 3 droop. camber is in the middle of the oem adjustors so there is plenty of adjustment with those + the heims. extended the wheel base 1.5 inches for firewall clearance and its all very close at full bump.

Man, I just found this thread and I'm really impressed. I just bought a 99 Sierra last week. It came with a horizontal uniball upper control arm but a stock lower control arm, fabtech coils and 2.0 fox resi's. I want to throw some coilovers on there but am unsure how to make the measurements and what size shock to get. It looks like you went with the 10", do you suggest the same for my application? do you think I could mount it to the factory lower control arm? Thanks for your input, it looks like you really know what you're doing!

geez and i told you to just take measurements liek a dumbass ha ha sorry dude i didnt see that part (god i hate being that guy that doesnt read the post). um when i cycled my stock suspension i got 7 inches, 8 if you smash the bump stop. you probably get like 9. best way in my opinion with the designs and ideas i have thought about would be to cut the droop stops off...the ones under the UCA by the bushings...and set up the front end to droop another inch using limit straps. post some pics then we talk more.

uniballed UCA and 2.0 w resis. sounds like what i kinda wanted to do before i got myself into this whole long travel setup! first off post a pic. second dont coil over it. you will have to plate the lower arms and its not worth it IMO. if you want coilovers then you might as well just build a front end or buy one. i wish i went your route first and experimented with coils and shock tunning first before i just build a front end. seams more interesting. anyone can buy the stuff i have and build or have it built. and no id say a 8 inch coil over would be more what you need. do measuring first. post a pic dude, im interested in your front end. lates.

Hows bad is the bumpsteer with those spindles?
i didnt get the chance to measure that. it was late as ffuucckk sunday when i got the arms on. i then had to take it all off and put the regular lift spindle setup back on so i could drive to work in the morning. i eye balled it and it looked near nothing but after 20 inches it got crappy but im strapping it around 17.

What did the new upper and lower control arms run you
im making everything but the spindles, the pictures are of the mock up arms so i can fool around with the geometry. finals will be with 4130.

still going with the original plans...ordering up some FOX 2.5 16" resi bypass shocks and 2.5 bumps in a couple of weeks.

wow sounds like im not the only one with stiff springs lol

negative, they are custom HANDMADE long travel springs built by Jonathan @ North County Spring of escondido with GMachine Tig welded shackles. they are actually very nice and i thought i could get by with the stock shocks till i got the bypasses. shocks are the limit to the suspension right now and they binded when i drooped last night.

ordered up a set of FOX 2.5 2 tube bypass 16'' resi shocks friday for the rear. Should be here in a couple of weeks.

it will be strapped at 16''.

funny you ask cause i figured i would have it geared instead of doing it myself, save some hours of work for me. i got a quote from 4 wheel parts and they wanted 800 bucks to just gear the truck to 4.56 gears. no LS or locker. screw that so im just going to purchase the gears and a locker and do it myself ha ha like i do with everything.

Its about 300 labor

buy the parts from summit or randys ring and pinion and a truetrac about 700 in parts 400 for the locker 300 for install kit and gears

1000 total maybe an extra hundred for locker install

crap i havent posted anything in a long time. had to ditch the bed idea due to the design.

decided to go a different route, got some new parts:

-long travel deavers
-10 bolt rear end with 4.56 gears and factory limited slipped
-32 gallon fuel cell
-LED lights
-finally put my 4 35" bfgs on!

along with the new deavers came a new bedcage. very very similar to the design before but with some tweeking and some more dimples! ha ha.

you still didn't answer my question :)

negative man, this project is for me and me alone. not making anything for people anymore, not even bumpers. dont have time, between 50+ hours at work, riding bmx at night at the skatepark, and working on my truck, i just dont have time for that right now.

plus this truck takes alot of time and its a future race truck. racing the 1000 is in my blood and my grand father and father did it for years so its only natural for me to want to do it!

just a saftey issue l would double this bracket up...thats a heavy jack and with all the bounceing around your gona do can see that wearing through or breaking sitting at back...hate to hit a bump and have that thing come flying through the rear window..if nothing else would keep a eye on it..vey nice truck btw...love yer gradge...lucky bugger :O)

double it up thickness wise or amount wise because its 1/8 inch and there is another bracket on the other side.

its secured very tight on the other side as well so there is no movement when its on. i went through an entire desert season with no problem with that design. this next one i might make out of 3/16 cause thats what i have in the shop right now but otherwise the design has been good.

04dezert1500
08-20-2007, 12:16 PM
That jack bracket will not break.

Good to see you got deavers. Is this why you built the new bedcage to match the travel on the new springs? You may have issues with axle wrap but since your only running a limited slip you may not. Under sprung might have been the safe way to go but you'll know once you test it.

Why not run the stock tails? Get the 03' up they look good.

prerunsilverado
08-20-2007, 08:22 PM
it actually is pretty snug in there. i thought the same thing and the first time i went out i kept checking it over and over cause i would hate to have it buck out or something like that and break a good jack. no wear and it held on the whole time. as a matter of fact i cut off the mount the way it is and adapted it to the new cage.

maybe in a few years, right now with what i have done with the truck im gonna have so much to deal with before i tackle that. i still have the have the shocks valved!

plans for the motor include: a new one. ive been thinking about this alot lately and i have 185,000 on the same motor and i think investing in it wouldnt be wise. ive been looking at the HO 5.3 crate motor from GM performance parts. its got a mild cam in it and its street legal, which is what i need.

major plans after the front and rear is done is to buy a DD to tow it!

alright been working on the arms lately and they are comming along good but besides those ive been doing little work here and there on the back:

filler hose mount
http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e359/M419BMX/fillerholder.jpg

cut out the brackets for the stock fuel pump to mount and mounted the mock up one i have (still driving to work and back on the stock fuel cell). also dimple died the fuel cell straps.
http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e359/M419BMX/fuelpumpmounted.jpg

knocked out the rivets on the shackle hangers, drilled out the hole to 1/2 and put in some grade 8s. going to either guesset the stock hanger or build new ones since they flex and the bolts rubs real bad.
http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e359/M419BMX/shacklebolts.jpg

prerunsilverado
10-12-2007, 08:25 PM
the uniballs why

why? cause they are a good design that is trouble that needed just a few more ideas and changes. first off the bolts are a 3/4 top and bottom that go into a 1 inch uniball. when i used these spindles before i got the camburgs i made my arms 4 inches over hoping i would push the 16" of "claimed" travel the cst 3" over kit has. ffuucckk that youll find the first problem is the 3/4 bolt on the top restricts the travel right away, even with high misc spacers. second...the machined hole for the wheel hub only accepts stock depth wheel hubs, try to get one from autozone or kragen and it doesnt fit! like i said good design with trouble.

go back to the beginnning of this thread and read up on what i tried to do, jason at gmachine (where i got my shackles) fell into the same hole and we both talked about ways to change it but in the end i ditched those ffuucckkeerrsss for 400 bucks.

nice beads, did you take measurements from the stock ones then extend them a little or are they about the same as stock?

sorry to be an ass but its not as easy as that. the only thing that i used from the stock geometry is the mounts, everything else is of my geometry to allow the tire to cycle up and down and in a smooth pattern without hitting anything. regular people know nothing of doing this. i have spent many many many hours and days and late nights doing geometry. i spent over 6 months researching for this front end before i even started buying parts. changed things on the way cause i learned as i went too. i increased the wheel base a little, increased the castor a little, and created the upper arm to sit in the middle of the adjustment so it will still be aligned for the street. the guys at work thought i had gone crazy after i welded up the first uca cause i was so excited. a year in the making but its seemed like longer than that. again sorry to be an ass just venting cause it is really A LOT OF WORK and if knew what i know now, but back then, i would have BOUGHT a kit. but i didnt so here it is. tomorrow i weld up the passenger side uca. pics to come!

xxdabroxx
11-02-2007, 07:33 PM
did you draw it all up in cad, or just paper it out? i have thought about building a little buggy with a streetbike engine and drawing it all up in cad to check out all of the geometry, but i dont have access to a tubing bender so im kinda stuck, and with the recent investment i have made in my truck that project will get put on hold for a while. im sure the design phase of the project is quite tedious, but it is better than building a dozen pieces of **** only to find out that they are a POS after you built them. nice work though i am jealous

prerunsilverado
11-02-2007, 10:05 PM
no cad and started on paper then moved to metal. if you look at my mock up arms they have cuts in the pipe half way and are sleeved. i would play around with different measurments in the castor, camber, lengths, uniball angles, etc etc.

not much has been going on for the truck lately. its been sitting like this since thanksgiving weekend. work has been super busy and my hours have gone up with it so no time for the truck during the week. i finally couldnt take it anymore and i worked under a tarp yesterday in the rain and hail to finish cutting the coil buckets off and clean the frame. oh and i ended up getting some new desert trip only race tires (see below) . oh and the front end cycles 18" metal to metal so after all said and done i will get my 16" of travel that ive always wanted (maybe for christmas ha ha).

Engine cage welded up last week so my buddy Jacob and I fabbed up the cross brace between the two shock towers. Came out perfect. I still can get to my trans oil dipstick/fill, my engine oil cap, and other vital parts without having to take it off evertime I want to do motor service. I got better at my tubing to tubing welding too :).

if knew what i know now, but back then, i would have BOUGHT a kit. what kit would you consider running? have you heard good things about the cst long travel kit? is that kit comprable to yours?

stealthcammo1
06-22-2008, 02:43 PM
the CST kit is very limited. my guess is hes gonna say blitzkrieg or mazzula. maybe even camburg

96chev4x4
06-22-2008, 10:39 PM
ive been looking at the camburg setup. im thinking thats the route im gonna take.do you know what the pricing difference is on the mazzula kit?

stealthcammo1
06-24-2008, 02:42 AM
not sure on the mazzula but if i were you id really take a look at blitzkriegs kit and call and talk to them 714-630-0630 to see if thats what you want. their kit is cheaper. the hub upgrade can still retain the ABS sensor (camburg cannot) and blitz has a nice tie rod upgrade. this is just my personal opinion and preference. all three companies are reputable and do awsome more.

finally bought the 2 fluidyne coolers ive wanted for the tranny for a long long time now. started mounting them on the bedcage. been working on the removable x bracing for the front of the bedcage while i save up money for a new motor since i found out the one i have in the truck is not worth rebuilding.

Wow, nice build. I also have a 99 Silverado but not like yours...I am interested on what you decided for your engine? You were going to replace it with a Chevy 5.3 performance engine...is that still the plan. The reason I ask is that I am wondering what to put in my truck when the engine gives it up. I now have the standard 5.3, but I put a supercharger on it.

Let me (us) know what your plans are.

Cheers

Just got done with "THE READ" of this truck. First of all; damn nice build, Awsome fab skills. I'm not haten' on ya at all. Re minds me of when I lived in So-Cal back in the early 90's and saw these trucks for the first time. I knew some people who worked for the "Terrible" Herbst family. One of the sons had a Pre-Runner that was all Fabbed up like your truck that he used to sport around Newport Bch. Makes me think back on the fun I had out there in the Desert. Great job man and keep us posted on your progress.
