View Full Version : What is your weapon of choice? Dukemaster 11-24-2006, 04:08 PM What kind of cuttings tools do you use? Hotwheelz 11-24-2006, 04:23 PM i love my saw-zall!! Sweet Tea Man 11-24-2006, 04:28 PM depends on the job. but i'm never far from my plasma cutter or my trusty cutting wheel bignick31985 11-24-2006, 04:31 PM I've got a 2.5 inch pnuematic grinder and a 4 inch Harbor Freight electric grinder. Got some decent cutting discs for'em, but I really want a sawz-all. Sweet Tea Man 11-24-2006, 04:34 PM I've got a 2.5 inch pnuematic grinder and a 4 inch Harbor Freight electric grinder. Got some decent cutting discs for'em, but I really want a sawz-all. i had a harbor freight 4 1/2" grinder. when i was cutting the tops of my frame rails it kept bogging down. i switched to my dad's Makita, and i havent looked back since:LOL: bignick31985 11-24-2006, 04:40 PM i had a harbor freight 4 1/2" grinder. when i was cutting the tops of my frame rails it kept bogging down. i switched to my dad's Makita, and i havent looked back since:LOL: My pneumatic one is pretty good. It sliced up the bed support over the differential with ease. But that is pretty thin metal. The 4 incher though does get bogged down...it took me like 2 hours of straight grinding to get my notches cut when I did the flip kit. And it doesnt have an easy off button so I could lose fingers if I dont hold on good. I've been meaning to upgrade to a nice one with a warranty that will last through hell and back. jaredcc86 11-24-2006, 05:17 PM i had a harbor freight 4 1/2" grinder. when i was cutting the tops of my frame rails it kept bogging down. i switched to my dad's Makita, and i havent looked back since:LOL: yeah makita makes pretty damn good electtric power tools. Circular saw, drills, sawzall, grinders...i usually go w/ makita for the price/quality ratio.. matrixbackman01 11-24-2006, 05:19 PM gotta love the ol skool, the torch Dukemaster 11-24-2006, 05:41 PM Yea i gotta say my 4 1/2 inch Harbor Freight grinder does that job. I looked at this way 19.95 or for a makita 100 or so. But i do have to harbor freights cut off wheels seem to hold up really. I think they sell 10 for 6 bucks roadfool 11-24-2006, 09:52 PM im too poor for the plasma cutter right now, but my pawn shop sawzall will eat whatever i put in front of it. Low88 11-25-2006, 06:20 AM depends... I have been into the torch alot for quick cuts that dont matter. Nothing beats it for speed... But id say 90% of my truck was sawzall built. Andrew Sylvest 11-26-2006, 10:18 AM plasma>all comegetsome 11-26-2006, 05:08 PM plasma but i still love my torch the best:scared: jdm-eg 11-26-2006, 08:46 PM 4.5 inch angle grinder ... Bagged 04 11-27-2006, 09:53 AM Plasma all the way. crewon24s 11-27-2006, 03:35 PM i have them all but i think im going with the cutoff wheel for thin metal and plasma for the thick stuff an my torch rarely gets used Kid_Rock_GTX 11-27-2006, 11:27 PM I love using a electric grinder with a cutoff wheel on it. But it has to be a Flexovit Razorblade cut off wheel, actually i use there closed coat grinding stones too. I love throwing a 7 inch cut off wheel on my 9 inch grinder! WOW that thing will cut 1/4 plate like most cutoff wheels would cut threw 16 gauge steel. Seriously if you have a chance to get your hands on these check them out. Here is a link (http://www.aeriform.com/browse/product_list.aspx?catID=34&Keyword=razorblade)to all the different wheels there are that airgas carrys. Here is a pic of the razorblades, by far the baddest cutoff wheels, and grinding stones ever made! http://www.aeriform.com/cachedImages/0000005%5Ct047_r08464_v-2.jpg Beside the electric grinder with a razorblade I use the sawzall once in a while, it has its places. for removal of crap the torch is nice. Something that you will not catch me dead with is a pneumatic 3 inch cutoff wheel, I HATE those. but all in all 95% of my cuts are with a razorblade cutoff wheel on a electric grinder! Sierra Stud 11-27-2006, 11:37 PM plasma>all :word: tony@air ride 12-01-2006, 09:01 AM 72cc Husquvarna with a 32" bar :) SIC-K5 12-02-2006, 07:43 PM Nothing Beets A Good Old Grinder With A 7" Cutting Wheel. Chop It...... bigjrodriguez 12-11-2006, 11:02 PM what would you guys recommend for cutting out some tail lights into a rollpan. like caddillac lights or other lights were the quality of the cut is important. XXL 12-14-2006, 03:12 PM Should've done checkboxes so I could vote on several. :hack: BEN IV 12-14-2006, 08:20 PM All of the above, sheet metal cut off wheel or plazma cutter, plate torch or plazma cutter, tube band saw or sawzall. Just depends on what im doing. Loki 12-15-2006, 02:10 PM Like others have said. For Steel i use either a cutmaster 51 plasma, or a torch For hard to reach seized up bolts and such, i use either a portable bandsaw or a sawzall...both of which have many applications, i have a cutoff wheel depending on what i'm trying to cut on i use a sabersaw (air powered reciprocating sheet metal saw) for body panels and fender trimming. (also good for forming fiberglass in precision cuts) it just depends on the application :read: Loki 12-15-2006, 02:14 PM what would you guys recommend for cutting out some tail lights into a rollpan. like caddillac lights or other lights were the quality of the cut is important. i would start by drilling pilot holes at 6 points of the cut area. if they are ovals, i would do 4 close to the corners and then 2 on the far outside of the oval. i would use a scribe to trace out the lines and then a few beers to steady my hand. after that, i would use a pneumatic sabersaw and clamp the roll pan to a couple of 2x4s or a couple saw horses. :read: just depends on what i have handy. then i have a pneumatic rotary drill with deburring bits that i would use to smooth it out. (be careful not to take too much out, those bits are crazy if you're not used to them.) i would practice on some sheet metal if before doing it on a rollpan if you've never used the tools before :read: XXL 12-16-2006, 03:12 PM then i have a pneumatic rotary drill with deburring bits that i would use to smooth it out. http://www.cornerhardware.com/images/4/4463.jpg Loki 12-16-2006, 09:29 PM that works too XXL :D Toms94z71 12-18-2006, 08:24 AM sawzall, saber saw, or grinder/cutting wheel because that is all I have for cutting metal. Use the sawzall mostly though. jeep45238 12-25-2006, 08:15 PM Depends really. Quick cuts where I can fit it, sawzall, smaller areas cut off tool, thicker areas not near anything combustable, torch every single time. I really would love to get a full size oxy kit...but this portable deal rocks the house compared to using propane or mapp to loosen ****. Jokeman 02-13-2007, 08:56 AM Sawzall, Portaband, 4.5 grinder or Pneumatic cutoff wheel. Bob T 04-12-2007, 09:36 AM http://www.cornerhardware.com/images/4/4463.jpg Navy designation: "Polish Milling Machine" 89cowboyup350 04-12-2007, 01:03 PM I love my variable speed Metabo 4.5" angle grinder. Other than that, Chicago Pneumatic cut-off wheel, torch and Im savin for a Pasma cutter. crewcab06 08-15-2007, 11:27 PM Depends on the job. i have all but plasma, dont really need one when you've got a torch. Bullitt 09-08-2007, 07:51 PM sawzall BADD2500 09-08-2007, 08:54 PM Plasma, oxy/acet, cut off tool, port a band, sawzall is last place on my list, for alumninum circular saw w/ carbide combo blade rainman318 09-08-2007, 09:12 PM Body saw or plasma 00shortbox 09-20-2007, 06:18 AM Mainly cut-off wheel, sometimes torches. rickypopham 09-30-2007, 03:15 PM Depends on the type of destruction, but in general a battery powered sawzall. 99-2door 10-01-2007, 02:29 PM Depends on the job.. Hacking---torch Sawzall or air cut off wheel for other stuff, grinder too. Some day I'll get my hands on a plasma cutter. SimpleGreen 10-29-2007, 08:37 PM All I own is a Ridgid Recip-saw, so my options are pretty limited :dunno: mulvane 11-23-2007, 11:19 AM Wheres the vote vote for tnt? It might not be a clean cut, but it will definitely remove any excess. TITANIUM 12-20-2007, 03:43 PM I have all of those in the shop plus three different grinders. BigJohnson 12-20-2007, 07:21 PM i used my dewalt angle grinder and a cutoff wheel to cut through leaf springs (3 leaf). like a hot knife through butter. Boheefus 02-26-2008, 11:41 AM 4 1/2" cutting wheel, my sawzall, portable bandsaw, or my ARC welder for the really thick stuff meyer2ml 02-28-2008, 11:46 PM Cut off wheel and torch GreaseDog 03-22-2008, 07:09 PM all of the above! lol my most common tool of attack lately has been the Mac 1/4" angle grinder with a cutoff wheel. its small size makes it very easy to control. for bigger jobs, i reach for the trusty sawzall. Chev-350 03-25-2008, 06:10 AM For big stuff I like the torch but for most of my cutting work on my truck's I grab the Makita sawzall or 4 inch grinder. The 7 1/2 inch DeWalt grinder is great too nothing stop's it. mittelmeier21 04-07-2008, 07:58 AM I use my sawz-all most of the time but if it's too thick I'll either use the grinder or tun the welder way up and burn through. I wish I had torches but I can't justify the price of them and the tanks for all the more I'd use them. ratfink61 04-13-2008, 11:36 AM miller plasma cutter...all day long... felixdosmil 06-10-2008, 05:11 PM Air Powered Cutting Wheel from Harbor Freight... gets the job done. Had a chance to come up on a plasma cutter, but I didnt trust myself... would probably be missing limbs by now... thepusher 06-16-2008, 02:26 AM The plasma is my favorite, but the sawzall will always have a place in my heart. CheapChevy 06-17-2008, 07:17 PM Remington 7mm. rebelbowtie 07-13-2008, 10:45 AM i had a harbor freight 4 1/2" grinder. when i was cutting the tops of my frame rails it kept bogging down. i switched to my dad's Makita, and i havent looked back since:LOL: makitas are nice but the brushes burn up fast i have smoke at least three but one of them i really abused it i put a 6" wheel on it and went to town no body mentioned air arc or oxygen lance. great for removing big welds LesFex 07-14-2008, 05:06 AM I keep trying different weapons; but I would like to use Sawz-all.... vBulletin v3.5.1, Copyright ©2000-2008, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
