Ok, I finally finished my painted interior pieces...... for the most part, still holding off on the glovebox until I get a rivoter. I was going for an equal balance of paint and non paint..... hopefully you guys think the balance is cool. I got my dash done last October and have been waiting for the weather to warm up some before I finished the rest of the lower dash and center console pieces. Anyway here are the pics:

too bad the dust shows up in the flash pic, it really doesn't do the piece justice of how smooth it is:

Thanks for the compliments everyone. It took a long time to do, partly because I'm a perfectionist at times and wasn't satisfied with some of the earlier results. I think I'm pretty much done with painting the interior. I didn't want to go overboard with things and feel the two tone look is done.

that looks really good - nice job! What was the color of everything before you painted (can't tell, some pics it looks tan, others gray)?

Well, it takes a lot of patience. Prep is everything. I learned that you can never prep enough. I re-did these pieces twice just to get it looking real good. I always colorsand no matter how the clear lays out. By no means do I have the equipment I wish I did...... I don't use an expensive HVLP gun set (just a $80 set from Costco), nor do I have the air line filter setup I wish I did.... just a Debilbiss screw on gun filter. It also is a PITA to get ready to spray, I obviously don't have means to a paint booth, so I spray in a 10x8 vinyl shed on the side of my house. Another note, make sure you have adequate lighting when spraying, this is a huge mistake I've learned from in the past. The best is flourescent lighting because it shows all the flaws. What I did was remove one of the flourescent light housings from my garage and set it up in the shed and used an extension cord. This helped tremendously. Only thing that sucked is I had no ventilation. I wish I could use a box fan, but i can't cut through the shed.

Well, my interior was 2 tone, a darker grey on the dash and a lighter grey color on the bottom. I have no idea what exact OEM color name it was because the back of each piece has a ton of different color combos for the part number :wtf:

Well as mentioned above, prep is everything. Besides that, you must use 'Bullydog Adhesion Promoter' for the plastic pieces, otherwise the materials won't stick. Here's a quick how-to:

1. Wash each piece with warm water and scrub with Dawn dish soap a couple times.

2. Go over each piece with a wax/grease remover and paper towel a couple times.

3. I like to scuff with 40 grit by hand first, then I use my DA sander with 80 grit, 100 grit, then 180 grit. This will remove all the texture.... a lot of people say it isn't necessary to remove "ALL" the texture, but you get better results if you remove it all IMO.
*if you don't have a DA sander, I don't know what to tell you..... you'll have to sand it all by hand. This is how I did my dash and that's why it took me 2 months. I got a new air tank and DA sander for Christmas and wow what a difference that makes.

4. I like to block sand real quick with 180 before laying down the primer. This removes all the little "hairs" left behind from the DA sander.

5. Use wax/grease remover real quick to remove any finger prints. Lay down a couple coats of Bullydog, waiting 5 minutes between coats. Then wait about 7 minutes after the second coat before laying down primer. I use DupliColor 'filler primer' for small interior pieces, I would get at least a couple cans for any given project. The key here is to go slow, believe me it will help. Spray light coats onto each piece, wait 7 minutes between coats. You don't want to get runs because it will make it that much harder to sand after. I would do about 4 coats, or until it looks really smooth to the eye.

6. Sand by hand with 180 grit and repeat step 5, probably lay 2-3 more coats of primer. Then you're ready for base.

7. I use 'PPG Deltron DBU' GM Black for my paint. I spray it with a HVLP gun at 24 PSI. Once again, spray light coats to avoid runs and wait 5-7 min between coats. I usually do 3-4 coats. You're gonna want to elevate each piece so that the bottoms don't sit on the table. You do this because when the paint gradually settles, it will accumulate at the base of each piece and give you crappy results.

8. I wait 30 minutes after my last coat of base and lay my layers of clear. I use OMNI clear, it's not the best clear, but then again, these pieces aren't on the outside of the vehicle either. Clear is expensive, so choose wisely. I lay 3-4 coats of clear on each piece and let dry overnight.

I wait 48 hours before colorsanding. I start with 1200 and then go over each piece with 2000 grit before polishing.

Hope this tutorial helps. PM me for any other questions.

Thats looks real nice, I want to install a center console but my girlfriend insists on riding in the jump seat in order to be close, when I fuss she gives me the puppy dog eyes..I'm hoping in the next couple months she'll get tired of it and push over so I can change that and maybe paint everything.

Just make sure she doesn't sit on the console if it's painted..... that wouldn't be good for the paint

That looks really good! I am wanting to do it but I do not have a lot of faith in my self! Hey Logan! Did you sand everything on the front dash panel, because some of it is ruff, and some is smooth? I need to get the balls to do it!
