I have a 97 chevy 1500 4x4 with a 5.7. It is the dual cat setup. I was thinking of buying a cat back exhaust for it, I dont really need duals im just as happy with a single exit system. I want a nice rumble with low interior resonance. What exhaust would you recommend? Clips are very helpful! Thanks

First, welcome to :fsc:

Second, there are several topics on this very issue in the Exhaust forum... performing a search will generate many threads for you to read with many differing opinions. Many have sound clips in them.

Just to give a brief synopsis of some of the more popular muffler brands, many use (in no particular order):
Flowmaster
Magnaflow
Corsa
Borla
Spintech
Dynomax
More often than not it comes down to what you want spend and what you want sound-, volume-, and tone-wise, as most (if not all) aftermarket mufflers flow better than stock.

Keep these general things in mind:
the bigger/longer the muffler the quieter the volume
the bigger the pipe diameter, the deeper the tone (within reason of course)
cat-backs usually cost more than having a reputable shop custom bend a setup
stainless steel (SS) costs more, but is worth it (typically don't have to replace it)
very often cat-backs use mandrel bent pipe (reduces turbulence compared to bent pipe) - the performance difference is negligible in a stock or near stock setup
Hope that helps in your decision making process and once again, welcome to :fsc:

Thanks your post is very helpful and I think I will buy a muffler and then have an exhaust shop bend me a tail pipe. Now the question is, what muffler will give me a deep rumble with low interior resonance? Thinking maybe a Flowmaster 50 series suv or magnaflow muffler or a dynomax super turbo. Any suggestions?

The flowmaster Delta 40 should give you a nice rumble with very little resonance, or a Dynomax Ultraflow, which may be quieter at idle but louder when you get on it, because it's a straight thru type. Whatever you do, don't get a Dynomax Super Turbo, unless you want super quiet, here check this out:

Wait check this out Flowmaster Delta 40:

Or maybe you want this mellow Flowmaster Delta 50:

I've got the Magnaflow (22" case length) and have been very happy with it. Before the Magnaflow, I ran the DeltaFlow 50 (DI/DO rear exit) for ~6yrs. It had a nice tone, but since I had to replace my exhaust (tail pipe welds broke) and I wanted something a bit quieter, I went with the Magnaflow.

The Delta versions of the Flowmaster brand are quieter and have less drone than the Original version. Also, I've read that the Super versions give you the Original tone without the drone.

I think im going ot go with a flowmaster 50 series suv dual in single out. I'm just going to replace my stock muffler with it.

That will have a nice sound to it - go with the Delta Series - less drone. You may even consider the 70 series (quieter than the 50). One advantage you'll have over my experience is that your truck is not all cabin space - you can actually have more exterior volume without it intruding into the cabin area.

According to the flowmaster website the delta should have more drone? I ordered the suv buts its not too late to change my order.... Should I?

Resonance is not an issue because even my Orig 40 has none to speak of. It's gonna be Quiet outside with a Delta 50, or SUV muffler, I suggest the Delta 40 for some sound. Just listen to the sound clip in my signature of the Orig 40.

If you ordered the 50 SUV version, you got the Delta Flow technology with a larger internal "H" for even less interior resonance/drone than the Delta50. Short of going with the "50 Big Block" you picked the quietest muffler they make. Good choice in my opinion.

As MikDee stated, the volume level will be pretty tame until you romp on it.

I told you so, less roar then the Orig 40, but more bark then the Delta 50! :D

If you're gonna go with a 40 series, at least read the posts regarding the differences between the original, delta, and super... Get what you really want the first time (it's cheaper in the long run).

If I do get a 40 I want the one wiht the least interior resonance, which would be a super 40 correct?

You need duals on that truck. Cut the cats off, but leave the 02 sensors on. Run pipes 3 ft back to Cherry Bomb glass packs. Run two pipes back that exit in front of the rear wheel. Best exhaust ever crerated

JBA makes a nice set up that isn't quite as loud as the flowmaster systems but does give good sound and tone and it will not resonate in the cab durning general cruising

Went with the 50 series suv and I'm glad I did. I cant even hear it on the interstate and it sounds awesome around town! Nice rumble!
