I go low all the time and don't have problems, perhaps he forgot to lengthen his soft line in between the frame rail hard line and the brake block on the diff. if that is too short i can see going down and due to the lack of length it would rip out taking the hard line going to the drums with it that is connected to the brake block

somehow the castle nut on the balljoint sheared the cotter pin and came loose and the control arm popped off and ate the ground, i dont know if that balljoint caused it to happen, but i cant see the control arm hitting the ground doing that a balljoint, so i had to cutaway the grinded metal around the ball joint cup and press that one out and i put a moog ball joint in, but as that happened it also destroyed my bag

10-29-2007, 10:29 PM
oooouch.....

I'm not questioning you...but did you torque the castle nut on before putting in the cotter pin?

Only reason I ask is that I saw something similar happen on one that was basically only snugged and cotter pinned...if that makes sense....I guess the ball joint started to slop around when driven, distroyed the joint,in this case..the ball joint completely failed....I have no idea what kind of ball joint it was..or anything else...it was just on a truck that came into a shop I used to hang around at....

I think its 80ftlbs, then slightly backed off if necessary to install the pin.....

bootie
10-29-2007, 10:45 PM
ive never torqued it down, ive always just just hand tightened then a turn or more past til the cotter pin can be put in

well....I don't know what else to say :dunno: ....its really not like bearings on a spindle...where you gently tighten them in to seat the races...and then back out and finger tighten the crown nut.

Ball joints are tapper fit...and everywhere I have read ....shop manuals....instructions from belltech for spindle install...it says to torque them to 80 ft lbs...all the action is in the joint...the tapper pin needs to be tight in its socket (on the spindle)..any play here, amplifies the forces in the joint itself...and as the pressure comes on the crown nut...since it is not held tight with ample torque, would work on the cotter pin..the thrust forces are different here than on your axel nut...the washer and crown nut on the spindle itself are there to retain the bearing on the spindle....all the forces are working perpendicular to the axel...with your ball joint...the forces are acting parrallel to the joint shaft...any room for play..even if its minor...will only amplify under the torque applied while your driving etc.

I could be way out to lunch here...but thats the way I see it....it may have nothing to do with what happened...but I would guess that it played a role.

80 ft lbs doesn't really feel like much when you are torquing it...one turn past finger tight could be close?
I'd check in this when you are reinstalling them...just a thought.

the bag with the tumor may not be because of the control arm. i know of 4 people with slams re7's that are doing that i have to check mine to make sure they arent. but its a commmon problem and i think slam may do something about it its worth a shot even if it from the arm they dont know that. sorry for the hard luck keep the thread goin

i know for a fact the bag wasnt like that before the control arm incident, cause it was all up in the pocket, and there was only one rub mark on it, but on the balljoint part, everyone ive ever done was just tighen by hand and then some ebough to get the cotter pin in, ive been told by mechanics along with a bunch of people and this is the first time ive ever seen this happen

Beyond Static©
10-30-2007, 09:56 PM
quite a few guys on SSM are having slams that the rubber seperates, and causes bubbles. Slam will warranty it. I dont think the control arm caused the bubble. If anything, I would see the bag popping instead of bubbling

bootie
10-31-2007, 04:39 PM
i dont think it was like that, i mean if it was i would have been rubbing the pocket hardcore and there was only one rub mark, and i wasnt shy to hit the switches either

parkinglotking
10-31-2007, 08:06 PM
it was probably a combination of both. slams are extremely thick soo either way they will warranty it. my freind cut 1/8th into a slam once and its still on the truck.

viclama03
11-03-2007, 09:09 AM
You should be fine.. Call Slam up and they'll replace it. I had that happen to one of my bags and they sent me a new one.
