Ok so earlier this week i took off my side mouldings, and for whatever reason the double sided tape was really really baked on there!!
I searched on here and got advice from friends and NOTHING worked!
The list of stuff i tried:
Goo Gone
Rubbing Alcohol
WD-40
Power Washer
Credit Card
Plastic decal installer
Buffing wheel
.... thats all i can remember off the top of my head..
The 1 recommendation that I didnt try was the 3M strip-off wheel because i couldnt find one locally and i didn't want to spend over $25 on something else that might not work.
But it gave me a bright idea. Now when i say the above list didn't work, i mean it. I spent over an hour with each of those AND combinations of each trying to find some way to get this junk off.
Well... i went upstairs and took the following item off my desk. 30 minutes later my doors are clean!!
I promise, you can find this item at almost any store near your house:

Yup... i erased the left-over film with a STAEDTLER Eraser. the thing worked great!
I've read enough threads on this subject and no-1 mentioned this. So i figured I would share it with the rest of you, its going to save someone a lot of time!

Good Idea right there if you cant find the 3m strip off wheel. BTW Guys the wheel work GREAT, but DO NOT apply alot of pressure.

Never heard of that kind of eraser, but I need to try it. I'm tired of screwing around with goo-gone. Where can I find that eraser at?

walmart, staples, office-max, any place with school/office supplies, almost all craft stores, etc.. pretty much anywhere- its a very common eraser.

i used a pressure washer and a little 3M Adhesive remover...
Thanks alot for the tip Sk1er18. Now if you had just posted this about 2 months ago when I debadged my truck, I could have used your tip. Thanks for nothing. LOL

Crewcab06:
yea.. that stuff didn't work for me.
everything that i tried and listed above was a recommendation from a friend or i found it in a thread on here.
therefore... those methods have worked for people. however, for 1 reason or another none of those methods worked on my truck--- and when all else failed it was awesome that a $0.30 eraser worked!

lol sorry man!

yea i was looking for that too when i was trying to find the 3M wheel-- no one carried the wheel or the specific 3M remover... they kept giving me goo-gone and similar stuff.

Yeah, I used goo gone to assist with removing pinstripes with a credit card. Pretty much screwed my clear coat. Some polish fixed it back up though. I would not recommend goo gone. I was about to order a 3m stripe off wheel online. I will look for the eraser first :D.

If your really looking for the 3m whell (which I suggest - AWESOME!!) then stop in @ your local NAPA. They might not have it in store (mine didnt) but they have it in their catalog!!! They can order it and mine was 35 with tax if I remember correctly. Had it in 2 days!

Pure mineral spirits (you buy at hardware or paint stores) will remove anything off of anything, (one of the best and only things for oil based paints). But i definately like the eraser idea, good thinking

will the mineral spirits hurt the paint?

I had a similar problem with some debadged areas on my truck goo gone barely worked rubbing alcahol didn't do much better.
SOOOOO after about an hour i remembered that my local body shop had me use laquer thinner to remove some road paint from my truck i figured why not and that took the adhesive right off no problem. You just have to wash the area and put some wax on afterwards... but the eraser is a good idea i'll have to remember that!!

laquer thinner.... i would never put that on my brand new trucks paint! might as well just use gasoline at that point- lol please try the eraser next time before the laquer thinner, the eraser is cheaper too

Well my body shop guy explained to me that the baked on factory paint jobs are really pretty durable on newer vehicles. It is strong stuff and i have found that it pretty much takes off anything... DOT road paint is pretty stubborn
Its more of a last resort than a clean my truck with this all the time type of thing, and besides you can't tell the difference in the paint once you put a new coat of wax on.
just throwing out options
Good luck!

in my experience with paint jobs...theres no better paint job than the factory job...it shouldnt hurt it
