I just went through the whole air compressor and air tool purchasing deal last week. I spent probably a month researching it. I was shooting for $300, but ended up around $530, and then dropped another $50 on a 12 piece set of sockets. For DIY stuff, I focused mainly on DeVilbliss (some Sears Craftman models) and Campbell Hausefeld (Home Depot Husky) compressors. I want to say that Campbell Hausefeld also makes the Kobalt compressors at Lowes. I wanted an oiled, belt driven pump, preferably with an iron crankcase. Oiled lasts longer, and belt driven means there is "gear" reduction, and lower RPMs at the pump. Iron crankcases are also supposed to be quieter, and supposed to last longer. CFM is the rating you really need to look at, and compare what the tools you want to use will require to what the compressors can provide. I've found that many specify SCFM, which will typically be a tank assisted number, and not a sustainable number on just the compressor, when the tank gets low. Duty cycle can be important too, if you're going to be using tools that drain the tank, and run the compressor a lot; I found this specification to be the hardest to find though. There's a Husky 26 gal compressor at HD for $379 that has an iron crankcase, belt driven, oiled pump, with a single cylinder, and provides 5.8 SCFM and max tank pressure of 135 psi IIRC. It's also advertised as 100% duty cycle, so theoretically *could* be run 100% off the compressor. It doesn't appear to come with a regulator or anything though. Sears has a 25 gal horizontal on sale for $379. It has an iron sleeved, two cylinder aluminum, belt driven, oiled pump. 6.8 SCFM with a max tank pressure of 150psi (means more air fits in the tank). It also came with a regulator and quick connect on the compressor. This is what I ended up buying, even though I wanted the vertical Husky. Higher CFM and higher tank pressure really made the decision for me. And this one is made by DeVilbliss. Both run on 120volts on 15amps. I've found the Craftsman to be very quiet, and barely needed to run when using a good sized 1/2" impact wrench. Sears also had a $130 1/2" impact wrench on sale for $100, with a 580ft.lbs rating. Works great. A 50ft 3/8" hose was on sale, along with an air accessory kit (tire chuck, quick connect fittings, recoil hose, etc..) on sale. That, with the 12 piece socket set for $50 ($30 IIRC) on top of all that. Really look at the specs on the tools too. The $50 impacts I looked at had low 250ft.lbs ratings, and will have more trouble breaking nuts and bolts free. I didn't buy a spray gun, so I can't comment on those. HTHs Jokeman 06-26-2007, 08:46 PM Ingersoll Rand for air tools. Search the net, you can get them at a good price. Im gonna get one of these for guns to mess around with. http://www.tcpglobal.com/spraygundepot/finishstart.aspx Mattman24 06-26-2007, 08:53 PM i have an air compressor just to let yall know vBulletin v3.5.1, Copyright ©2000-2008, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
