Depends where you work. My friend worked at Best Buy installing car audio and I think he made about 7 or 8 bucks an hour. Some just audio shops might pay 6 to 8 bucks maybe up to 10, it just all depends on the shop and the owner and manager and how good you are and what you can do.

When I installed at a local shop, after three years I was making 8.50 and hour, no commision, but 15 bucks an install (cd player = 15, amp = 15, etc)

Went to cc after that, were paying me 13 out of the gate. I took there computerized training, was suppose to take a week to finish it all, took me less than 7 hours.... I walked in there knowing WAY more than anyone else there.... I quit after three days and went a different career route as there was no money in installing

Before I left, I was at a comission based store, I averaged between 45&60k a year, I was second in the region (1 state, 5 stores) and number one was in the same store as i was, i think he was ~75, it's going down hill there too though, they cut pay by a percentage, changed some rules, then they lost 4 veterans in six weeks. I miss the paycheck, but not the drama.

45-60k??? thats insane! but you do some ridiculous work so i can see why

Thats what I always thought when I first started. A lot of that has nothing to do with the custom work really, it's all comission based, so for example, the split was 34/44, or for 1st class installers, it was 39/49, with an extra % for shop goal. For the first 4000 in labor dollars, you got 39%, after the 4g's, 49% and if you were doing a custom job, that met managers approval, you got 60% on that given job. So you can see how a bay that exceeds over 100 grand a month can make some coin.

Downside, is it sucked, everyone going as fast as you can, a lot of people would screw others by either slowing down or speeding up to take certain jobs, not much of a 'team' attitude. It's going downhill though, I'm sure they'll come up with different paycuts etc, a guy like me with custom abilities isn't all that recognized there because they dont care about it, slam it out is more like it.

I got recognized for labor amount, not for having quality where a person drove from california (14 hours)and left his car with me for two weeks. The main question isntead of "what do you plan to do to this ride" was replaced with "how much is this going to pay?"
