I hope you were joking about not being able to spell formula. I have never seen or heard of it turning the tires white, but I do no it will cause them to "dry rot" quicker.

Yep that or look into Marine Clean from POR-15, it can clean almost anything.

so, hypothetically, how would you use a wheel cleaner without getting it on your tires in the first place?

A good cheap alternative way to clean white walls is Comet.

Wet a brush and pour some on it, scrub and rinse. Does a real good job too

i would also be carefull with the bleach white, i used it on my trans am and it stained the polished wheels pretty bad, took me about an hour of elbow grease to get them somewhat normal again...kinda left a white chalky residu on the polished finish, looked fine when they were wet, but when they dried they looked foggy and chalky, just a heads up

It is better not to use any wheel cleaners at all. They are too strong and messed up my stock wheels in my Tahoe. I was even told by friends that they were told by a rim place not to use wheel cleaners on the rims. I just use car soap and scrub them good. No need for that crap.
