I'm looking for a Photoshop how-to.
you've seen the pictures where the vehicle is in color and the surrounding area is in black and white.

Can someone post a write up on how to do this or point me to one that is already out there someplace?

Thanks :D

duplicate the layer then go to image>adjustments>desaturate(on top layer) and then take the polygonal lasso tool and select around the truck and right click>select inverse and press delete and thats it

This is actually pretty easy and there are several ways of doing it, Joe.

Method 1 -- the dirty approach. Create a duplicate file to work on so that you don't screw up the original. With the duplicate open in PS, press D to set your foreground color to black and your background color to white. Select your brush tool and in the settings across the top of PS, change it from Normal to Color. Use the brush to paint the background black and white.

Method 2 -- the basic layer approach. Open the original, right click on it and create a duplicate layer. That new layer should become active, so all you have to do to change it to black and white is goto image > adjust > desaturate or press CTRL-Shift-U if you prefer keyboard shortcuts. Then use your eraser to erase the car from the black and white layer, exposing the color one beneath. Or you can use your lasso or pen tool to select the car and delete it... You may need to temporarily shut off the color layer to make sure that you're erasing all of the car on the black and white layer. When you're done, save the PSD file if you want to do any future work, or just save it to JPG format.

Method 3 -- Layer masks. Start off the same as method 2 by creating a duplicate layer and changing it to black and white. Make the black and white layer active. In the bottom of the layer toolbar, there is a button with a circle enclosed by a rectangle. Click it to create the layer mask. The layer mask will become your active work area. By default, the layer mask will be white, indicating that the whole layer is visible. All you need to do is select and delete or erase the part of the mask that you don't want to see. You'll notice that this deleted area in the mask's thumbnail on the layer toolbar will become black, indicating that the area of the layer isn't visible. As long as you're still working on the layer mask, you can use the eraser or the pen tool in either black or white to add and delete sections as you see fit. If you decide that you want to modify the layer itself, you have to click off of the mask's thumbnail in the toolbar and click onto the layer's thumbnail. Again, save your PSD if you intend on doing future work, or save straight to JPG.

If you have any questions along the way, don't hesitate to give me a yell.

If you select your truck in this approach and then invert your selection, you'll be deleting the background, leaving a black and white truck on a color background. :read:

I have been using Photoshop CS3 for about a month now and it has a very nice Black and White adjustment in it, it does a far better job that the desaturate adjustment.

I set out to show the differences and using a photo of your truck I couldn't get it to look right because the gray color of your truck against a black and white background never really showed the impact...
So I said to he11 with it, I'll just make the truck blue!
