I am buying a transgo 4l60e-hd2 kit and a corvette servo. what else should I consider buying and installing with this kit? I don't want to do a whole tranny rebuild, but I do want to make sure I am not going to break something after the install that I could of replaced easily. thanks!

Get a new filter and dont forget the tranny fluid. servo access might be a PITA for a 4X4.

where is the servo located?

passenger side of tranny above the pan behind a heat shield. use a 10mm wrench to remove the two bolts.

How about a .490 boost valve and the 4th gear servo piston? I don't think the shift kit comes with them.

In addition to the kit and servo, I'd swap the nylon accumulator piston for a metal one and also upgrade to a hardened valve body seperator plate.

the .490 boost valve comes with the kit.

a couple more questions, when I buy the corvette servo should I get the extended pin too? and is there only one accumulator piston? i see some that just say accumulator piston and others that say foward clutch accumulator. is there a difference? and does the piston usually come with piston rings too?? and what about the 4th gear servo I hear about? thanks

shouldnt need the extended pin. if clearance is loose use the gold servo spacer rings, included in the shift kit. there are actually 3 pistons. 2 bigger pistons and the little forward accumulator piston. You might get lucky and all of them are aluminum. I had the one in the accumulator housing that was plastic. The other one in the case was aluminum and also the forward accumulator piston was too. the rings are plastic. The one I got for the lower accumulator housing came with a plastic ring already. not sure if they all do or not.

cool. I'll probably just buy the kit first and see what it comes with so I know what to buy. so are you saying that sometimes there are already aluminum pistons in the tranny from the factory??

another question, what are the pistons for? what to they exactly do? im new to internal automatic transmission work but I learn very quickly and appretiate all the help.

also, I believe my tranny started sllightly slipping in 3rd and 4th, would this kit help eliminate it??

thanks..

Some say to replace the plastic accumulators becuase they can crack or get damaged with age or abuse.Ive only seen one fail in a camaro, it was cracked almost in half. Not exactly sure what the accumulators do. if its slipping might be too late if the clutches are gone. you will see lots of metal/clutch material when you drop the pan.

well it just started kinda feeling like its slipping in 3rd and 4th but only when its warm out. I had change the fluid and filter and the magnet in the tranny fluid pan didn't have hardly any metal around it. more like a little silverish goo. it dosent seem to slip when its not too warm so maybe an aftermarket cooler and the transgo kit will eliminate it mostly??

Looking more and more like I will be going the same route as brandon. It sounds like we have the same model and all so what he has listed be what I should consider buying as well? Also is this some thing that just the ordinary weekend novice can do or should it only be left up to the pros at the transmission shop? I do know how to turn a wrench and all, and not afraid to crack some thing open to see whats inside for I can put things back together pretty easy, and I am a fast learner to boot, but my size and all some times limits me in small places. I can already hear some fat jokes amongst you, but truth be told thats not the case for i am 6'7" and 250lbs and having big hands is some times a tragedy to work in tight places. Again what will I need exactly, and where is the cheapest place to get it, and is the list the brandon has started some thing I should just go by? Thanks Kevin

I was able to install the transgo hd2 shift kit and vette servo
in 2 days. took my time rehecked everything twice. Probably will be harder to install in a 4x4. I ordered the parts off of ebay, except for the filter and AT fluid.

how is it harder on a 4X4?? I can get the heat shield off to do the servo pretty easily (took it off before to change pan/filter)

I think he was just guessing it would be harder since there's a Tcase and such down there, that could potentially interfere with access to the servo.

But if you've tried it and its easy, then you don't take his word for it, just go for it.

I put in a vette servo in mine in about an hour, first time for me to touch the trans.

Ok, so I've heard enough talk about servo's that now I'm actually curious to know what you would gain by putting in a Vette servo. And about how much does one cost?

under 20 bucks:http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/CORVETTE-SERVO-PISTON-700R4-4L60-4L60E-CAMARO-TRANSGO_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33727QQihZ007QQitemZ170138577796QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

anyone know where there is a writeup on installing the kit and servo? i got instructions with the kit but they are not very good at all.

follow the pictures carefully. double check(triplecheck) your work. look at the gaskets for the valve body and seperator plate.
one will have the letter V cutout, it goes between the valve body and seperator plate. The gasket with the letter C goes between the tranny case and seperator plate.

Tips:

cut the servo gasket and pull it out to get the servo cover off.

bend the shift linkage if you cant remove the back torx screw to swing the shift linkage out of the way. you have to do either to remove the pan.

keep track of those check balls(dont lose or forget one) be carefull when removing the valve body they could fall out. use vasoline to help them stay in place when reassembling.

I know i should run a tranny cooler with a shift kit. I noticed today that my truck has a factory tranny cooler and the tranny fluid runs through the radiator and then through the cooler, should I still buy a new one or are the stock tranny coolers pretty good? I know this truck has a factory trailer hitch and 6 way wiring, so maybe the cooler is part of the tow package? its still got a 10 bolt rear though

stock tranny coolers are fine. unless your gonna do daily towing or hauling then get a bigger one.
