View Full Version : Crank Relearn Question...

I plan to get a tune in September & am wanting to get my ducks in a row first.

I plan to buy a tune & keep my old one so therefore, I should need a crank relearn & from what I have found around town, I will be having to take it to a dealer to get it done.

Is that something that I can put my old PCM back in the truck when taking it to get done? Or does the tuned PCM have to be in the truck (& hope they don't reflash it  )?

The crank relearn procedure is one that must be performed with the new PCM installed in the vehicle.

I was afraid of that!

Hopefully I can find a dealer who is cool with tunes & will do ONLY the relearn

Not sure if you are planning on getting a local tune or not...

We offer a "factory restore" programming option with our custom programs. If, for the life you own the truck, you need to restore the factory programming, we will send you our programmer with your original program on it, once, at no charge (except shipping).

Also, since we send you our hand held programmer rather then doing a PCM swap, crank relearn is never an issue for our customers.

How about when upgrades are made to the truck...intake, tires, etc? How much each time?

I was planning on the Wait4me, but am still open to other possibilities.

What kind of time frame are we looking at to get one of yours once ordered? Assume there are problems with the tune after sending the handheld back, how quick would you be able to get it back to me so I could "detune" the truck?

Who pays shipping back & forth on this?

I just left your site checking prices & have one question that I hope you will answer...

For your price of $250, I am stuck with one PCM & have to rely on sending the programmer back & forth before I can make any changes & should there be a problem with the tune (it happens), my truck is down. If I get work done at the GM dealer & the tune gets flashed...then what?

For about $100, I can get a "spare" pcm with the tune loaded on it & keep my original as a fallback should something like above happen.

I guess what I am saying is why spend the extra money that it costs for a Trifecta tune?

(not trying to be an ass...this is an honest concern)

Are you speaking of black bear? If so, $250 includes the 2nd PCM. Or send it back and get $100 back.

* I guess not but justin does good work. http://www.blackbearperformance.com/

I was asking about the Trifecta programmer thing...

Yea, He actually is the 2nd post up top. Alot of guys around here get his and he can do it where its kinda like a dyno tune. He sends a cable to you and you drive around for like a week or something and you send the stuff back and he goes off that info to get the most power ect. But yea that cost $200 after all the deposits are refunded. I got his regular tune and its great. I plan on upgrading to the other one soon. Oh yea, and up dates are free.

Great questions!

"Minor" updates are $50 + shipping. Minor updates are anything that don't require major changes to the programming (e.g. fan temps, speedo calibration, etc). "Major" updates are 15% off the regular price.

We usually ship within 24-48 hours of ordering.

Shipping is $25 for UPS ground, and covers both directions (we include a prepaid return shipping label).

If we send you the tuner, and anything needs to be adjusted in the tune, we can email you an update for as long as you have the tuner. We ask customers to send the tuner back within a week of receiving it unless there's an issue we're working on.

Not sure what wait4me charges, but the main advantage we provide is you don't have to swap your PCM out, and you won't have to worry about crank relearn. If you need something touched up in the programming (e.g. you want more aggressive shifts), we can email you a new program.

We are offering $50 off regular price for FSC members for this month.

We also give you the latest factory calibration from GM with our custom programming, so the dealer would have no good reason to flash your PCM except to try to charge you $100 for updating it to the latest factory calibration. ;-)

I got a PCM from Nelson... Of course I needed a crank relearn done...
I stopped at a buddy's shop on the way home from work and it may have taken a whopping 3 whole minutes to do.

My question is this...

Does anyone know what handheld scanners are capable of doing the crank relearn procedure ?

I hate having to take my vehicles anywhere to have anything done, and like to be completely self-sufficient... and until computer controlled (OBD series) cars came along, I pretty much was.
I was looking at the Snap-on Ethos the other day when my toolman stopped by and thought it was pretty slick...

Any advice or suggestions ?

Of course, GM's Tech-2 can do it. I heard OTC makes a handheld that can do this as well.

Our GT Tuner could potentially do this, too. The code is written to perform Crank Relearn, I just haven't integrated it yet because I haven't had any demand for it.

Not to hijack this thread. I'm running a tune from Justin, and I'm pretty pleased with his tune. :10:

Justin, didn't know you was a member here?
