An clues on how to tighten it up? cancritter 08-13-2007, 11:12 PM if l remember corectly theres a nut you can tighten for the shifter ..it runs right of the stearing linkage in the engine compartment underneath the master cylinder..see if you can snug that up some..also on the linkage undernesther theres some ruber bushings at the link point near the frame ..they can wear and become lose..both my 88 and 91 were fine..on 91 i did tighten that set screw or nut on steering linkage to take out some play elcaminobill 08-17-2007, 11:35 PM Cancritter, I'll have to check those ideas. It felt like the slop was in the column itslf but that can be deceptive. Thr truck has well over 200k miles, so things probably have a lot of wear. Thanks, Bill Chevyman247 08-18-2007, 04:54 PM I tried to tighten that nut cancritter was talking about. but since I am so strong, I broke the bolt head off and had to go to a junkyard to get one. It was a real PITA, couldnt drive my truck withought being able to shift to drive. so dont overtighten it or you might not be as lucky as me and find another one. cancritter 08-18-2007, 08:17 PM WARNING...dont tighten to tight.... :O) 1ugly88 08-19-2007, 11:05 AM i had the same prob on mine. not only check what was mentioned above but also check the pin that holds the shifetr in the column. i broke my shifter off about 2 weeks ago. when i took it apart not only was the shifter fubared, the pin was worn and the spring in the column was busted too. replaced all 3 and it's as good as new. kenman1717 08-19-2007, 12:54 PM what about on a 97, my shifter is loose, its not loose all the way into the column, it starts where the little boot out of the column ends. i can hold the boot in my hand the rod in it is tight, but where the shifter handle exits, it wobbles around there. i thought i heard somewhere that if you take the covers off, there are a couple little screws in there that will tighten it, but wanted some clarification on this first. 4x4z71 08-20-2007, 02:19 PM Can you tell me how you replaced the spring and where you got it at, Thanks, Lee CKTA 08-20-2007, 02:23 PM what about on a 97, my shifter is loose, its not loose all the way into the column, it starts where the little boot out of the column ends. i can hold the boot in my hand the rod in it is tight, but where the shifter handle exits, it wobbles around there. i thought i heard somewhere that if you take the covers off, there are a couple little screws in there that will tighten it, but wanted some clarification on this first. You need a new shifter handle. 1ugly88 08-20-2007, 02:57 PM Can you tell me how you replaced the spring and where you got it at, Thanks, Lee i got the spring from the dealer. it was only like 8 dollars. drive the pin out for the shifter handle, remove shifter. when you look down inside the column you will see the end of the spring sticking out. grab it with a pair of pliers. install is the reverse of removal. i dropped mine down in the column during install so i had to pull the wheel and lock plate. fished it out with a magnet. will get you a part number when i get home and locate the receipt. 4x4z71 08-20-2007, 03:41 PM i got the spring from the dealer. it was only like 8 dollars. drive the pin out for the shifter handle, remove shifter. when you look down inside the column you will see the end of the spring sticking out. grab it with a pair of pliers. install is the reverse of removal. i dropped mine down in the column during install so i had to pull the wheel and lock plate. fished it out with a magnet. will get you a part number when i get home and locate the receipt.
