View Full Version : notched sub box??
my reg cab has '02 tahoe seats with a custom center console. my box's dimensions are causing the subs to be about 3/8" from the inside wall. since the box is constructed with 3/4" mdf, i was wondering if i could cut notches into the back of the box where the magnets hit, and fiberglass back over the cutouts to create some space? i just dont know if this would create weak spots or not. i DO plan on glassing over the cutouts form the inside and outside though.

If you look at many of the prefab boxes, they do this, only without the f/g. Does that make it right? No. But if you're planning on f/g'ing the inside & outside, and the back has some bracing to begin with, I don't see any issue with this. But are we talking a corner of the magnet where it only needs a small notch, or are the face and back parallel to each other... If the latter, you may not have enough vent space on the magnet.

Do insure that you have a half inch of pole vent clearance for your sub, if so then you can do whatever you need to get it to fit. Just make sure you don't weaken the box.
Hmm... okay well heres a description of what I will do:
The top corner of the magnet hits the rear inside of the box, it would need approx 1/4"-3/8" more space to clear. So I was thinking i will cut an area big enough to give the magnet a good. 3/4-1" of space (would that be the pole vent clearance ///M5?) The cut would be made with the saw at a 30* or so angle, so when I lay the chopmat down it will be as smooth as possible. Then a couple layers on the back of the cutout for strength. I can now see how it wouldn't be a problem, as long as the box still has strength. It's just that the cutout/fiberglass would be right behind the magnet and I didn't know if eventually become a weak spot. I can maybe even drive in a few screws through the 'glass and MDF when dried to give a little more bit.
I just feel dumb because I took out a good 1/4" or so (the space needed behind the magnet) from the measurements of the box when mocking it up. You see, the seats/console/my height all come into play with how the box was designed. I got it to where the box comes all the way up to the rear trim panel (reg cab BTW), the subs wont touch the back of the seats, and it clears the center console.
Sorry to rant on I just like to get descriptive when trying to figure things out. I think I got though. Ill snap a few pics of the mock up box later, its late right now, 4am so I have to crash out. Thanks alot too guys I appreciate it!!!

As long as you have a 1/2" of clearance behind the vent anything is fine. The clearance has to extend all the way around the magnet to let it breath though...
