Hope to get the main frame rails all finished up and welded to the front clip by the end of the month. Then I need to get another bender to start the mounts and other odds n ends. More pics as I go!

Well I got the rails tacked into the clip, then squared everything up.

More stuff on tuesday!

Got the front control arms done for the 22s. I had to take a little out of the frame so the front would lay out. Next is putting gussets in there and cleaning up the pockets so they look a little better.....

also going to have to cut his cups down because the bags bottom out now with the control arms going so far up! Finally get to put the new (old) lathe to work!

This is all the posts of my project so far. My buddy at Otto's performance Fabrications is the builder. I will be doing all the body mods and paint. I am going to try to keep this updated throughout the build. Plan is to have the frame done and four linked by slamfest 10/6 of this year. I thought you guys might be interested it in. ;)

My art arms are on the way too!! what wall tubing are you using? i was planning 2x4 .25 wall but keep getting told its too much. figured overkill cause of stretching for a crew cab.

Oopps...yes 3/16 wall. sorry for the confusion. We picked up some 1/8 thick sheet to do the cab mounts and the transitional section from the old frame clip to the box tubing. Four link parts will also be on there way this week. It is crunch time to have it done for slamfest but I believe we can do it. We have about 10 days of work in it right now. All that is left is minor detail work.

dont kick urself in the ass to much...i used 3/16" on my reg cab long bed and i got some frame flex going on...were gonna try to add a few x-members in select places to get rid of it. Kinda wish i woulda went with 1/4" myself. to late now haha

Ok I know I haven't updated in a while but I have had a run of alot of restoration work that got in the way. At this point the frame is just about done. Things left to do include the remaining cab mounts, lower bag plates on the 4 link. And to drop down the front frame horns. here are some pics of the recent progess.

http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p113/hellfire_studios/98%20Chevy%20Pickup/022808006.jpg

These are all obviously of the rear suspension setup. I decided to run a trianglated 4 link the bags on the bars. I did have a kp 6 link on it and it went back and forth quite a bit even with the panhard. This way it will stay where it needs to be. No eating up the lips on my new 22" wheels.

The bag mounts in the rear are setup as you can see. The middle connecting bars are not symmetric (on purpose)as you can see. What do you think if the design?

Finally you see my front cab mounts. The frame transition was welding in today but I forgot to take picks. I had originally thought that I needed to drop the body 4 inches but I decided to go with a 2.5 inch body drop.

I should have some more progress on the frame at the middle of the week. I am going to try to update more regularly. And it should be a rolling chassis by the end of the month with cab on.

Probably going to have my shop logo or club affiliation laser/water jet and welded in the middle but I havent joined a club yet....hopefully there will be an <> in there some day ;)

Ok quick update for the weekend and then please expect updates more frequent. I plan on working on it at a much faster rate now. here we go.

Four link is complete (minus lower bag mounts, but they have been ordered). Cab has been set on the frame. All the cab mounts have been cut and should be on the truck by weeks end. Also I have done some extra work to the front suspension that I have never seen done before (not saying I am the first but I have never seen it done this way). But I will have to get some pics, I forgot to take them today.

pretty similar to the art ones so I figured I would keep them. Bolt in ball joints....the lowers were sold because I didnt like them too much. Problems keeping ball joints pressed correctly. ART ones are sweet. never had it bagged on factory arms so I couldn't give you a comparison though....

More updates probably this weekend. I am trying to get the cab mounts lined up right. I cant find my cab bushings though....holding me up. Than its to the front frame horns and firewall tub action. Bottom bag mounts on the four link will be here tomorrow so they should be done as well.

I went and looked at the 24' wheel prices and I have decided to keep the 22's. I should at least drive on them before I decide to upgrade. Plus I plan on driving this truck. No trailer queen here. so I think the bigger tire will be more comfortable. Thanks for the feed back.

As far as my rear suspension goes....I didn't model it after any one elses. The bars in the middle are also asymmetrical. If they do look close to some one elses it wasn't intentional. so who cares.

There is some one on this website that modeled their frame after mine almost exactly and I haven't raised a big stink....so let it go.

Ikon.. i modeled my frame off of some early pics of josh's build, look in the first page on this thread.. i really liked the design and rigidity it would create. post 27 to be exact

btw josh looking great.. 24's on a bodied daily seems very tough. im still trying to figure out a ride height with 22's.. thinking frame level, 5-6" off the ground. would like to get the ride height so wheels can turn w/o airing up.

I don't think that you will be able to with out airing up the front. I was looking at mine today and there is no way I could make a sharp turn with out airing up the front most of the way.

thanks for straighting up that doods comment. ;)

I got the front end and bumper hung today. Me and Jay from Otto's performance fab (my frame engineer) are trying to get it all nice looking for UNITE 08. those in the south east should make sure they go to that show its going to be crazy.

well with my setup im yanking now i have a ton of clearance with tire to fender with the high offset of the rims. I used to keep my ride height too low and have to air up for right turns especially, with 1/2" fills it got annoying. going with 1/2 fills and seperate 1/4 (flow controlled) fills for under the radar ups.

i was refering to necessary height of the frame (for body dropped trux) to untuk 22's enough to show the lip of the rim and part of the tire for turning.. forgot to check that b4 i pulled everything. will test it once i get my frame table built and current frame in place and reset cab etc..

Quick update. Just to clarify things my shop and Otto's performance fabrication share shop space. All the frame work and fender trimming to this point has been done by Jay at Otto's. Just thought I would clarify things. He has been building the frame, I am doing the body mods, body work and paint.

I have some pictures from UNITE 08 but need to upload them. I will do that tonight.

Ok guys I need some feed back. For those of you out there that have a really good understanding of four links and how they work. I have been getting some feedback on my rear setup that it is not angled right. I have been told by multiple people that there are a few issues with it....

first being that with the bags mounted so close together it will have a really bad body roll?

Secondly that with the angle of the four link bars it is going to have no anti squat when I accelerate from a stop light.

I am going to take some better pics but here is what I have right now...

Kruznlow69

i agree on the body roll. that was my major reasoning on doin a canti again. every which way i tried to keep the bags inboard the rails i kept seeing how close they were and what that would do.

as for the anti-squat i cant see the perfect angles to tell but your front mounts are pretty close (verticaly) and your axle mounts are spaced quite a ways away which would really shorten up the instant center (I believe?) for having an ex cab thats pretty long i would imagine you would want the bars more parallel.

on my old setup i built i ran a equal parallel 4 link, parallel to the ground at ride height, and canti. sway bar up front, all new polys in the arms and it cornered like it was on rails, then took the sway bar out and hit "positive" sides in a corner and i could push even harder but tires were squealing...!

i'd like to see a side shot of your back half at ride height.

08-15-2008, 07:23 PM
Ok kind of a quick update. I will have some pics tomorrow. I found a four link calculator online and put in all the measurements from the existing setup and found out that as it sits it has -10% anti-squat. I believe the typical setup should have around 80% anti-squat. So I am about 90% off. so we went ahead and cut off the four link and upper bag mounts and decided to redo them.

As much as I hate to cut off the existing work (as it was well done) I want the truck to drive nicely so it had to happen.

We should be moving pretty quickly on this project in the next month as Slamfest is rapidly approaching and Most of the <ST> family here in Florida has not seen the truck in person yet I want it alot further along for the show. so keep your eyes peeled here for more updates.

I will have some pics for you tomorrow.

I had a buddy of mine build the frame as I prefer to do mainly bodywork and paint. We were building it in my shop but now its at another buddys shop being redone....

There were a number of problems with the original work.

1 the fourlink was not properly setup. the way it was setup the anti squat was way off...which is not a huge deal but I do not want it to swat every time i leave a stop light.

2 the upper bag mounts were really close together and that means that it would have some body roll which I didn't like the idea of...

3 and the most recent one...the wheel base was set at 143.5 inches....and the four link was built without the drive shaft in the frame. when we went to install the drive shaft it was 2 inches to long. so now we had to shorten the frame to the right wheel base of 141.5 inches.

PM sent.

To the person asking about where the doors lay. the cab sits about 1/2 inch lower than the frame. I was originally going to cut the rockers down and lay door but I decided not to instead I am going to weld four drag block mounts at the four corners of the cab level with the cab bottom so that I do not damage the rockers when it is laid out. and I can add blocks when I want to go draggin. I had it laid out with out these in place at UNITE but the truck had no motor in it so there was not a terrible amount of weight on the rockers but now there will be....

Badass build man, i just found this.

shave05
09-17-2008, 08:46 PM
since you redoing the frame four link mounts why do you need to shorten the bars. just move the mounts two inches forward from where they orig where. and put them at the right spot for instant center and antisqut

fabitup
09-18-2008, 04:45 AM
they end up in a wierd spot. I am going to have to make a crossmember that is almost a foot higher than the original mounts and if we do not cut them down it will not line up right. they meet right in the middle of the frame transitions from the wide part to the narrowed part. so it has to be done to get them to mount the way I want to mount them.
