I drive a 1994 Chevrolet Blazer, 5.7l assuming 4l60e
I realize that the same transmission is usually used in non 4x4 vehicles, I just wanted to clarify my situation.

I am considering rebuilding my transmission.
After talking to numerous people, its 90% sure one of my bands is fried.
I figure, while I'm in there, I might as well do it right and replace everything thats wear and tear. I don't know what I'm going to find inside, but since I'm not the original owner, and I'm pretty sure its been in deep water and ragged on, I'd just like fix it so I don't have to do this again.

That being said, I have limited tools, in fact lets just say I have none, no sockets, no airtools.
I can borrow some airtools from a friend, but as far as wrenches go, I don't have any.

I'm looking someone or some of you to tell me what I will need to disengage and lower my 4x4 transmission as well as taking it apart.
I did find some manuals online, but which is the best to buy?
I know there used to be and probably still is a big controversy between haynes and chilton.
I've never taken apart a transmission (obviously) and only one single cylinder tiller motor so I'm not exactly seasoned.

If someone can tell me the best manual to buy, and recommend any special tools you needed (if you've done one yourself) I would appreciate it.
Really liking this forum so far, and out of all the vehicles I've owned, starting with a dodge, to a ford, to a passat and a jetta, to a 94 gmc jimmy to a 94 4x4 blazer. I love my chevy truck.

Thanks
-Eric

With your lack of tools and experence I highly recommend you have the rebuild done by a professional. You can save some $ by removing and installing the trans yourself with a friend with tools (either manual should be good enough for that) but rebuilding an auto trans is not a good starter project for a novice wrench. Tools needed for removal/install include-
3/8&1/2" drive SAE sockets
3/8&1/2" drive Metric sockets
swivels and assorted extentions for both
SAE open/boxend wrenches
Metric open/boxend wrenches
1/2" drive torque wrench
Various screwdrivers and prybars
floor jacks (one with tranny holder preferably)
jack stands
various other tools (cresent wrenches, plyers, good light, etc.)
And probably some others I've missed. good luck

thanks, looks like I'll be picking up a manual and removing the transmission myself to save some money.

I am going to have to agree that rebuilting an auto tranny is not a good novice project. The only tool that doglip didn't list (and you don't have to have em to get it done, it just is easier) is some racheting wrenches, there are some tight spots in there. Oh, actually one more thing, a torch of some sort may be damned handy if you exhaust is in the way.

You can remove a trans with basic hand tools and a decent size floor jack. Take to the rebuilders after you get it out.

If removing a trans is the biggest job you've ever taken on, then rebuilding it yourself is a boo-boo waiting to happen.
