well as most of you know, my truck was taken away from me after 2 years of building, one month of interior/system work, three weeks of driving, all by an F'in drunk driver! here's that thread Wreck thread (http://www.fullsizechevy.com/forums/image-gallery/snapshots-videos/275820-kruznlow-toast.html)
ANYWAY my rebuild is going to consist of all my hopes and dreams i had and do it all up right again!

overall goal is a hot daily driver, Crew cab short bed, 22's, SFBD (possibility), similar bed treatment, denali theme, and some perdy paint.

Keep us posted on the crew cab short bed progress, I've been wondering about doing that for a while now. I was thinking it would take a ext-cab longbed frame to do it though, will the back of the cab clear the rear wheels?

Lots of pics to give me inspiration. Hopefully I will have frame finished soon. yeah they're kinda different outfit but nice, tons of NOS parts

have you considered a stepside bed? seen both obs and nbs cc with 'em look damn good imo. did but i want the fleetside. system and fits me better.

so is everyone jumping on the cc bandwagon now if so itll be worn out quick no offense umm not that i know of... draggin, dapolice and i are thes one i know of building them, you see them here and there but very rare compared to a reg cab or ex cab???

no, Astro's are full-frame vehicles.
incorrect, they have a front engine cradle and are unibody, he built a full 2x4 box frame incorperating the cradle.

and to others thanks for the comments and i'll be doin as much as i can when i can. i dont have the free time i had b4 but i have more resources to make things a lot faster this time.

I think you should get some tahoe rear doors and modify the cab and bed to have the wheels wells in the rear doors and bed. I made a pic using a newer truck showing what I am talking about. I have never seen one done like this but think it would be a pretty cool truck if done right.

all depends on how you go about it, dressing it up or building it.. i'm not gonna dress up a motor with 175K on it even though it is clean. i jsut dont think the vortec motors are that nice looking but i'm sure i will come up with something to dress it up a little anyways.. if i do any motor/trans work it will be down the road. plans but there spendy!

i'd love to but i jsut dont have the budget for it.. i have a vortec 350 that runs good now (as i knock on wood) and suits me fine. i dont like to drive fast, so show would be my reasoning. a whipple charged stout rebuild would be my choice. would be lots of fun though! i jsut cant afford to do the motor now.. that will be a next around project.. the rear end and all will be ready for it though!

well all i did today was go to rochester to pick up my new tonneau cover. I finally got a snugtop snuglid tonneau, WOOHOOO which will now complete my ordering/buying/locating parts for a good while. this weekend should prove some progress!!!!

next up is to start planning out my frame. i'm thinking either a full new frame from the firewall back or keeping up to the 3rd body mount right b4 it kicks back up. i need to add some length between the 2nd and 3rd mounts for the crew cab. i want to keep as much bed space as possible so the bed will get stockfloored also. i'm goin to use 2x4 .25 wall vs 3/16 cause of how long this frame is goin to end up being and the overall added weight from the 1/16th (100 lbs or so) wont kill me. i want this to be as rigid as possible. im also planning on a tri 4 link and using a 2dr tahoe gas tank in the rear. tons of ideas flowing right now..

Sorry if I missed it but I didn't read the whole thread.

Are you going with the same paint scheme as before? It'll be hard to top that last paint scheme if you're trying something different. That was like my most favorite paint job I've seen. That sh*t was f'ing beautiful bro.

Good luck with it whatever way you go, keep us updated.

Paint.. hmm. i honestly dont know yet. scared to start thinking about it! lol

well i will be jiging up the frame here soon. lookig for any other advice b4 i start from anyone thats done this. My floor isnt too great and the drivetrain is staying in. i plan on doin a backhalf from where the frame kicks up jsut in front of the 3rd cab mount and not from firewall back. i need 2 lengthen the frame between the 2nd and 3rd mounts for the CC swap also while SFBD'n it.

process i think i will do.
#1 level cab mounts, front to back and side to side
#2 check level across front rad support mounts
#3 drill 1/2" holes in floor (its ok to drill)along frame for steel dowls and weld to frame to keep it stationary.
#4 drill dowls (plumb) in center of mounts for later placement of new mounts.

and start building?

lil more progress 2night. frame is completely gutted now. not one bolt or bracket left in it except the motor mounts, waiting for one of the two engines stands in the shop to be free. pulled the tranny, engine wire harness, drivetrain and rear suspension. got the frame jacked up to a good workable height and started leveling.

i have it ready to jig to the floor, bottoms of frame rails under cab are level front to back. radiator mounts are level across as well as the body mounts across. even the rear ended up leveing out so my frame must be in good shape yet.
hope to get it secured to the floor soon so i can get final measurements b4 shes chopped at the firewall.

it would probably be too much work but i even thought of building completely new front to back.. wouldnt be too hard to add a jig for control arm mounts, motor mounts, and steering box/idler arm mounts.... anyone have any experience???

lil more progress. motor is pulled, frame is jigged up and i've been taking measurements for an hour and im beat, long day... i got the frame level on the bottom of the frame rails under the cab, and across each pair of radiator and cab mounts.all turned out good.
I made plugs with a hole saw for dead centers in my body/cab mounts. I have all my measurements from; front to rear, and side to side with all mounts and bed mounts and measured for square and all those measurements front to back, (8 total mounts each side) everything is square and ready to add some diagonals from new floor to frame across my angle iron up front to keep from moving (floor pads are bolted with Hitli's into the concrete). other #'s i need to take yet are plumb elevations from existing concrete floor to mounts, check levelness(degree of angles if any) of all mounts and i should be good to start cutting!!!!
:hack: :fire: :fire: :hack:

need to order some body mounts asap and go pick up a little bit of steel.

for motor i am looking into a rebuild along with the trans again. i would like to do a 383 but i need to see whats feasable for me right now. I'm planning a full new dual exhaust which is gonna be a spendy parts list with new cats, O2 sensors, mufflers, and headers. Machine work i have a hookup, assembly is covered, so its really just parts and that can get to 2K easy... which is too much for me. who knows...

well spent today figuring out my drivetrain and meeting with builders who all voluntered some time and help so i can make this happen. engine is goin to be a 383 built by kent from the engine store locally, trans is getting built by jeff from my regular trans shop (dons) to handle the 400HP/TQ motor being built. rear end i have but is being setup by dca racing and supplying a locker. exhaust will use hooker ceramic long tube headers, high flow cats, i think flowmaster super 44's all with 2 1/2" tube. overall drivetrain will be very stout and fun!!!

anyways got the shop cleaned up and re-organized ... again! gotta keep on it or it will be a jungle in there in no time! so i got a start on setting my 2x4 rails into the front frame. cut the tops off the old to see where i need to trim the 2x4 to get as far up as possible. i am trying for as much contact as possible to weld up and then plug weld, then gusset. it will be overkill but thats how i like it!!!

my finished thoughts are this, please don't mind the great ms-paint work!!!
1st pic shows where rail will continue up to in red, green shows if i cut though the inner wall to get to the front side and possibly cut straight through it and plasma the 2x4 off to get more welding surface...???
http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u198/Kruznlow69/Picture0525.jpg

2nd pic shows where in red would but up to front and if i cut though the front and part of sloping bottom (full 2x4 rail goes though frame)where i could get lots more contact, but more possibly unnecessary work. green dashes are where cut through front wall.
http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u198/Kruznlow69/Picture0585.jpg

thats just an odd idea... thinking best way will be to cut through inner wall and butt up to the front wall and weld there b4 top plate is on... just trying to keep an open mind for ideas..

ALSO in first pic the width is a factor (frame is 1/2" wider than new rail) so i am planning to cut material from bottom to bring side walls together then re-weld...

well went on my first thought and got the rails fit into the frame this afternoon. took a lot of test fitting and trimming but ya gotta love a plasma! kinda ended up looking like a semi-arched compound miter cut in the 2x4. fits pretty good and next i have to deal with the 1/8"-3/16" of frame that now sits below the new rail. have an idea for that too.

well i'll have to get some more pics up, but prob not till tommorrow.. got the rails completely ready for welding in, and my mockup drive train, (bare 305 block, empty 4l60e case for easy lifting!) also setup the rear end where it will sit when layed out for driveline setup.. pics will show how i cut it all in to make it as strong as possible..

today i got up at 5am, drove 3 hrs, and parted out another denali! got full set of seats, console, L+R fenders, rear door glass and guts (for the rear crew doors), grill shell, headlights, a 3rd! escy/denali cluster, another bumper cover, complete steering column.. seats have some wear and small tears on driver side but i now have 3pr of front seats, and 2 pair of rear seats to pic from for my build..
will sell whatever seats i dont use, the console, and one of the clusters.. Nick picked up my stock arms and old gas tank and trans x-members last night. got top plates welded in, got a late start so i didnt get the fish plates in but ok, frame was a lil warm anyways.

the junction of the new/old frame is strong as hell even with out the fish plates!!!. we found a problem though. one of the guys stood on the end of the rail (12' out from welds) and we found flex in the coil pocket where its cut for bags (as would any fsc truck) when you trim the pocket it has to really weaken it. gonna have to re-inforce it somehow but that wont affect the rails.. jsut one more step on the build list.. can make a vid of the flex if anyones really interested.

very minimal, but at the end of the frame it multiplys. now granted this is a 200lb guy, at the end of the frame 12' away so that is a HUGE lever. i guess i just dont like seeing any flex anywhere. obviously every OBS chevy with bags has the coil pocket trimed as i do but not many have jigged up the frame like i did to even see it. only thing i can really think of is to put a fish plate on the outer side along the coil pocket, and try to add some sorta bracing inside the pocket.

wow, a power steering pump? wonder what a nice 383 would do to it??? lol

guess it was kinda expected but also kinda a surprize since no-one really talks about it when trimming the pockets out. goes back to the jumping on one rail, with no x-members, 12' down. probably would've never noticed it in a typical install..

anyone have some backhalfing experience?? is it prefered to run all the tri 4 link bars inside the frame or just the V. does it matter if the v runs from one point up from the both sides of the axle? im starting to lay out the rails/mounts, x-members and open for advice.. figured the basics of 4 link setup with keeping the bars parallel to ground at ride height and the longer the better.. want to run 2:1 leverage on lower bars too..

I've seen a number of trucks with all the bars on the inside....but keep in mind..the further you have your suspension mount points bags etc to the outside. the more stable the truck will be...handling better etc....It was explained to me like this...stand with your feet together....and have someone try to push you over...now stand with your feet apart...and have them do it again...much harder right?...now think about how this would effect body roll etc when you're out driving....
Most triangulated 4 links I see running around here have the lower bars mounted off the BOTTOM of the frame...I guess its easier to just weld the mounts on there?

Question, why did you decide on a triangulated as opposed to a parallel and panhard bar? Everyone has their preference, and I'm always curious about it...
I am putting a parallel 4 link and panhard in my truck, partly because I don't want my pinion angle changing so much over its travel.....

By the way AWESOME build!:rocking:

He cant put them under the frame unless he brings the whole backhalf frame up high b/c he wants the bags on the bars. Judging from the time hes spending on this build he wouldnt want to go with a panhard, panhards just suck.

I think it would be best to put them inside the frame, that way you can mount the bag centered on the bar. With my bars on the outside the bags are offset to the side & it does sit most of the weight on one side of the bushings, just as others have told me it would do. You cant bring the bar out any further it would hit the wheel. Than again, your building the whole frame so you have freedom of building the backhalf however high, low, wide, or skinny you want.

My vote goes for inside the frame, ive seen a few pics & it looks really good. 2inches does make a good point about the wider spread the bars, more stability.

Kruznlow69
10-21-2007, 12:08 PM
yeah i know what you mean by keeping the bars outside the frame for body roll. i guess i just dont know how i want to set this all up yet. i am not 100% on the tri-4link. i really LOVED the ride/lift with my custom 6 link/canti with a watts. it would be minimally invasive into the bed floor too. i just thought switching to a tri-4 link would follow the K.I.S.S. theory.

btw with the tri 4-link it treats the pinion angle the same as a parallel 4-link, jsut deletes the panhard but takes up more space..

damnit.. i'm really contimplating/debating the 6 link again.. man i loved that setup.

honestly it may be my best way to go since it will take up dead space under the bed and keep more room inside the bed..

this is a lot of stuff to plan out and i make things way too complicated!

edit
other factors i have
i need a payload so i have to keep a 2:1 ratio or less, my old setup was 2.5:1 and it was ok, but with a tonneau, 4 optimas, entire system, and 400 lbs of nitro tanks i was hauling 1000+lbs all the time. rear bags matched fronts at 85psi at ride height. new system will be bigger but no more nitrogen tanks!

i am planing a full dual exhaust with it dumping just in front of the bottom of the roll pan.

I am tryin to take a semi load of crap and stuff it into a campbell soup can with a can crushing body drop! Mmm Mmm Good!

Ok..why do panhards "suck"? I know you get some side to side movement of the axel...what other negative traits are there?

Low88
10-21-2007, 12:36 PM
thats about it. And with a properly setup panhard, you are only talking a 1/2" of movement.

As far as triangulated uppers, I have seen the 'V' setup both ways. As long as you keep 40 degrees of triangulation between the V, they will both effectively prevent lateral movement. IIRC, there are differences between /\ and \/, But I am not a chassis engineer, so I don't know. Max on SSM could tell ya.

Kruznlow69

a panhard can work great, but i will again have tight tolerances with clearance for the rear wheels.

while pounding my brain with ideas, i am looking at the end result and taking a step back for a min.. i'm really going back to my origional thought with the rebuild that my 6link idea will be best for me. The one drawback i had was with the crazy sides i got b4, doin so took a toll on bushings but superpivots would fix that.. With the sfbd and 22's i really wonder if i will throw "lowrider" sides anymore. i can tub all the wheel wells to clear for sides again. When sitting sideways, the wheel that was tucking the most, the top would really move into the bed area and force a lot wider of a tub than if it were layed out flat. also narrowing my bed volume which i want the most of. Thing i learned b4 was when hitting sides the frame location really didnt matter and the rockers were hitting the ground. i do want to keep the articulation though.
pic of old sides..

if your runnin really big wheels with minimal clearence with the bedside, sometimes that 1/2" of movement means some rubbing. im not bashing on panhards at all... just looking at his abilities it wouldnt be anything for him to fab up something that works a bit better than a panhard, especially on a badass build like this. sorry to give the wrong impression.

no news with the crew, still sittin in my garage. i do have a 2nd cab though now. buddy bought one of the crates for jsut the doors.

also in ronnies pics they look busy with steel everywhere but the first looks like max lift, and 2nd looks like max drop on his hoe.. look at the driveshaft. issue i saw was pinion angle is positive 1-3 and not 1-3 degrees negative.

amen.. my setup it critical, my last was just as if not more, my watts gave me 1/16" varience with 14" of travel, i had about 1/16" from bedside to tire on each side when layed out b4, 1/2" would bend body panels and not have worked!!

as far as last setup, that is probably my best option. i went from designing, building, and i hit the road for a year and only issue was bushing wear from crazy sides i set it up for and hit plenty of. super pivots should cure that along with my new doglegs i designed that i never installed. new system will be different but have the same function. built into the frame instead of working around it.

i have a new idea for crossmembers for my main rails.. heres a pic below.. it wouldnt interfere with much, would have plenty of room for driveline, strongest way to brace the frame, and can easily run the exhaust through cutouts with 3" ID 1/8" tube welded in. this is what i got the 1/8" 2x4 tube for. my frame is obviously all boxed in though as pic is C and I channel.

are there pros/cons to super pivots from various places or are they all the same? example, suicide doors, gravity werks, outlaw motorsports, ???

s10forum has a good read on how to put those joints together, since they arent as easy as snapping in the rubber bushings and knocking down the metal sleeve.

If your doing bag on bar I would keep a rubber end on one end and super pivot on the other. And make sure that the bag i not offset at all on the bar. Make sure its centered or the bar will twist and ruin any kind of bushings.

On my truck I drilled out the bars and sleeved them so the bolts can run through the bar to the bag and keep the bag center on the bar. I got pics if you want to check it out.

im doin a rear canti so no issues here with bags on bars. most likey using polys up front on the bars and the pivots on the axle sides. the dog legs will also use pivots on the axle side.. i think.. i worry with wear on the polys and the force of the bags that the pivots will allow side/side sway movement on the canti bar.
A thought i have to cure that, is a solid 3" delron bushing at the rear of the canti to keep the canti bar stable and the pivot on the axle tab of the dogleg to allow sway. with my old setup, side demolished the canti poly bushing..

hmmm.... maybe use the pivot on the rear canti bushing instead??? the bag will flex and that was the bushing that took the beating???

how brutal are you? goddamn

haha, I would do full poly's on the canti and doglegs with a superpivot on the axle part of the dogleg.

well a little progress. been werking behind closed doors on some things.. We completely re-organized the shop, built some shelving and i can now move all my seats and parts in my garage at the house to the shop so i can park in it. need to build my work bench yet and get a bigger roller cab.

LS1 swap, and trans are in. 383 stroker idea is dead and gone
Cab is in place, and clears driveline with some trimming!
Next to do is make a driveshaft carrier/hanger bearing x-member and then start on the rear of the frame and get it finished up.
